  1. QUOTE (ChiSox_Sonix @ Dec 20, 2012 -> 10:16 AM) Why stop at guns? Shouldn't we attempt to make laws to make sure anything which can harm someone else be kept out of the hands of people who might misuse them, whether maliciously or otherwise? To some extent...yes. There's a cost-benefit calculation in all of them, I'll grant...it doesn't make sense to bankrupt your country by doing salmonella inspections...but we do that with a lot of things. Toys (CPSC, which shoudl be stronger and better funded), Drugs/Food products (USDA/FDA), automobiles (go buy a new car without an airbag), Cigarettes (have your 14 year old buy you a pack), etc. We can do better with some of these, I'll admit. Some of them are deliberately set up to fail because the industry doesn't want them to succeed since it would cost money. But typically, outside of a small group, you don't hear people screaming it's unconstitutional when you want to do a better job inspecting fruit for e coli contamination, and you don't have people fantasizing about e coli giving them super powers necessary to resist some sort of scenario that almost never happens.
  2. QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Dec 20, 2012 -> 09:54 AM) I wish Charlotte Allen nothing but harm. Thankfully, karma exists. Really? In a thread about a school shooting you write things like that? Can't we have a little more dignity than actually wishing people harm?
  3. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Dec 20, 2012 -> 09:53 AM) Most people would agree to better laws and regulations to reduce drunk driving incidents. I wish I could say the same thing about gun homicides. It's getting presented like drunk driving is something we can't improve upon. That's not true either, in that case it's the "Cut spending!" "How dare you regulate private business!" that I think gets in the way of the kind of proactive steps I'd like to see from governments.
  4. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Dec 20, 2012 -> 09:47 AM) I've also not seen people who snap go out of their way to steal cars or use their own to go on mass killing sprees to kill as many people as possible. They go for the true killing weapon of choice, guns,. If people have good ways to suggest laws that would reduce the incidence of drunk driving, I'd be totally game for those also. I think city-funded tipsy-tow programs or free drivers or something like that, the type of thing that happens on expensive nights, would be a great thing to have in areas with multiple bars. I'd think of it as effectively an expense that the city imposes upon those facilities.
  5. QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Dec 20, 2012 -> 09:35 AM) 2014 pick + Mirotic - Boozer + other mid-level guys + healthy D-Rose = Championship That's also, conveniently, the year Deng's contract has expired. Depending on where the cap actually is by then and what happens, they could have ~ $15 million in cap space prior to signing Mirotic, if they shot solely for cap space but still held Taj, Noah, and Rose.
  6. QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Dec 20, 2012 -> 09:02 AM) I've actually watched a decent amount of Magic on League Pass given I've added Redick and Vucevic. Yeah, Redick has handled the ball some, but only as a last-ditch effort. He still doesn't create his own shot. However, he'd certainly be an improvement over Rip Hamilton - so there's that. You know, the Bulls could actually get their hands on Reddick using their expirings. Hamilton + one of Nazr, Vlad, Robinson, Teague, Bellini, or Butler actually gets that done, and doesn't add any long term money to Orlando if they're trying to clear cap space (unless they take back one of the young guys).
  7. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Dec 20, 2012 -> 07:49 AM) when did we start naming winter storms? You don't want to know how much I'm anticipating the storm named "Khan".
  8. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Dec 20, 2012 -> 06:28 AM) Except you're forgetting the key point in this particular Newtown case. If the mother would have responsibly stored her weapons, since they were in her name and not her son's, then this whole situation might have been avoided. How do we know that she didn't? A 20 year old can, in theory, responsibly learn to use a weapon on their own. If he walked into a Walmart, he could have purchased that gun. How do we know she didn't have them appropriately locked up and the kid knew the combination? And heck, in this thread, we've had more than a few people tell us how important it is to them to have their guns "Responsibly" unlocked, loaded, and ready to go in the case of the home invasion vigilante fantasy. Based on the arguments of people in this thread, if those guns were in her closet, loaded, unlocked and ready to go...she'd still be having them stored "Responsibly", unless several people in here want to describe themselves as irresponsible. Of course, in my view...the only way you're going to actually be responsible in a situation with a 20 year old with the type of mental issues discussed...is to not have them.
  9. QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Dec 19, 2012 -> 09:06 PM) Well, they can't be thinking of Montero as a long-term C with Zunino in the wings. They aren't going to want him catching more than 60 or so games anyway. Morales isn't a long term player either. He's almost certainly a 1 year rental. He's a 2nd year arb player this year, and probably unlikely to have arbitration offered again next fall.
  10. QUOTE (spiderman @ Dec 20, 2012 -> 07:09 AM) Is it possible that this is the team outside of some minor tinkering on the bottom of the roster? Yes.
  11. QUOTE (justBLAZE @ Dec 19, 2012 -> 08:04 PM) Balta I'm not saying we should have traded for Morales, but it seems like I've been hearing, that all the FA SP are gone from the market and Gavin is such an attractive trade prospect, this has been going on for few years and I have a feeling he will be with the Sox come opening day. Do you feel like Vargas got a major return?
  12. QUOTE (justBLAZE @ Dec 19, 2012 -> 06:32 PM) Other teams always find a way to get a SP and that SP is not GAVIN FLOYD ARGHH Seriously, where would Morales have played?
  13. QUOTE (South Side Fireworks Man @ Dec 19, 2012 -> 05:02 PM) Let's see how Flowers offensive and defensive performance hold up after he gets banged up and worn down from catching every day. That's what a lot of people don't seem to appreciate about AJ's game. Worth noting...Tyler has caught 100, 120, 120, 140, and 110 games for the last 5 seasons. Some of those games were probably subbing in late for AJ after a callup...but he's been behind the plate for a reasonable number of games each year if you count the minors.
  14. QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Dec 19, 2012 -> 05:01 PM) GMAFB. Let's overreact a little more, please? Yes, I agree. I should overreact more. I believe my concealed weapon will help with that.
  15. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Dec 19, 2012 -> 04:55 PM) A doubt that SYG will work here, but it's another example of the presence of a gun making a situation much, much worse, not better. And who knows if the law flashed through his mind when deciding to pull the trigger while we're at it. Above anything...this is the gun culture of this America. People shot over an argument about slow Pizza.
  16. Florida man gets angry at Little Caesar's over late pizza, gets into shoving match with the guy in front of him. Shoots the guy in front of him. Has used the stand your ground defense. Police have charged him, SYG hearing could knock that out.
  17. QUOTE (Lamar Johnson 23 @ Dec 19, 2012 -> 04:06 PM) But then the money you save has to be reinvested into perceived areas of weakness! We're not seeing that (yet!). Jake Peavy was brought back.
  18. QUOTE (ChiSox_Sonix @ Dec 19, 2012 -> 03:47 PM) That's interesting, but I think lumping suicides in the gun conversation is kind of silly. If you want to kill yourself, you're most likely gonna kill yourself, whether you have access to a gun or not. This is really not the case. Psychological studies on this one typically show that the real urge to commit suicide is a passing one. If someone has the ability to do so easily available, then that makes them vastly more likely to make the attempt.
  19. QUOTE (2nd_city_saint787 @ Dec 19, 2012 -> 03:13 PM) he's listed on B-R as a 1B/RF. If he can truly play RF he'd be a match. Someone mentioned a week or 2 ago the Sox were after an often injured player who slugs when he's healthy...This could be the guy. There's no way I'd want any part of Morales in RF. He's closer to a DH than a 1b after that injury
  20. QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ Dec 19, 2012 -> 02:46 PM) When I think of what represents Chicago, I think Bulls. Those Salt Lake City mormons and their sweet, sweet Jazz.
  21. QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Dec 19, 2012 -> 02:23 PM) Interesting...Mark Trumbo please More likely that they are dangling Bourjo's. Over in the Diamond Club, the main name noted as being dangled is Morales.
  22. QUOTE (iamshack @ Dec 19, 2012 -> 02:10 PM) Funny thing is, most people would probably enter a contest to get their picture used by advertisers on tv or in print My photography work has been featured in the yearly newsletter of a small Central American country (and I really don't remember which one).
  23. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Dec 19, 2012 -> 01:22 PM) You can go over the cliff for negotiating purposes (eliminate Bush tax cuts) and then walk it back after-the-fact. There will be short-term market concerns there for sure, but they'll be pricing that in before Jan. 1 if they aren't already. The real issue is if we do nothing about it for the entire year. As far as I understand it, we really don't have to cut any spending in January if we don't want to. Year-long spending can be shifted forward as-if we never went off the cliff and then adjusted once a deal is made. The other reason to go over the cliff would be if you actually believed the deficit was a problem. If you believe that...the fiscal cliff is incredible. It solves the deficit. Rapidly.
  24. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Dec 19, 2012 -> 01:51 PM) Ken RosenthalVerified ‏@Ken_Rosenthal Morales still #Angels player most likely to go. Desired return: Innings-eating SP. Morales won't get qualifying offer as FA at end of '13. So who needs a 1b and can give up pitching? We have pitching to give up, but DH/1b is full.
  25. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Dec 19, 2012 -> 12:54 PM) If only Liam Neeson were the hall monitor at the school. (Thankfully, he never produces any collateral damage).
