Game Thread: BAL @ CHW, 4/17, 7:10pm

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Apr 17, 2012 -> 09:35 PM) Maybe Marty is right. If these types of performances continue, the tenor of every single game story will be attendance figures between 10-13,000. Dunn/Beckham/Rios/Morel features. It might start to spiral to the point a change has to be made...a sacrifice to the fans, since it obviously won't be either Dunn or Rios. Yes, that's right, screwing with another kid and calling up someone the fans never heard of, that'll put butts in the seats! -

QUOTE (fathom @ Apr 17, 2012 -> 09:39 PM) Honest question...if Dunn hits .175 again or so, does anyone think he'll retire after the year is over? Yes, I think he would. I can't imagine continuing with that life, not when you've already made $75 million or so in your career. -
QUOTE (iamshack @ Apr 17, 2012 -> 08:54 PM) You can't throw more than 60mph either... Humph, Buehrles rough 2006 season was his 27 year old season, and that's when he said he needed to start getting in better shape.

QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Apr 17, 2012 -> 09:05 PM) I love this post. There is absolutely no way that the victims lied about Sandusky? It may be improbable, but its possible. Or what about Paterno, no possible way that what he was told was misconstrued or that he really didnt know what was going on? Lost, As for media coverage, you cant trust the media when it comes to legal issues. They purposefully misconstrue the information because sensationalism sells. No one wants to watch a news program that says "Well right now its entirely speculation, so lets wait for the facts." Its always better to sensationalize the story, who cares about the truth. One of Gerald fine's accusers just came out and said he made the story up.

Man, Dunn should have nailed that pitch. -

QUOTE (fathom @ Apr 17, 2012 -> 08:51 PM) Stunning that this offense is having a hard time even getting a base hit tonight. Some of the RBI totals for our players are comical. Konerko and pierzynski are averaging an RBI a game. -
QUOTE (iamshack @ Apr 17, 2012 -> 08:48 PM) He's not old enough for that yet 27? I didn't have knees left by 25.

QUOTE (lostfan @ Apr 17, 2012 -> 08:27 PM) I'd like to see some kind of cross-section between the people who think Zimmerman is not/will not get a fair trial and is being treated unfairly to see how many of them also think that about Jerry Sandusky... just out of curiosity. Are changes of venue much more rare than I think they are?

QUOTE (justBLAZE @ Apr 17, 2012 -> 08:27 PM) Weiters is pretty good, didn't he too struggle right after coming up for a year or two? 773, .688, and .778 ops in his first 3 seasons. -

QUOTE (justBLAZE @ Apr 17, 2012 -> 08:22 PM) 13.5K Really? I'll bet that translates to a loss of about those 2500 season tickets on the year then. -

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Apr 17, 2012 -> 08:18 PM) Everyone knew coming into this year attendance was going to be way down. Had 2 games last April with attendance of 18k and 16k, and 16k was the reported for last night I believe. -
How many crappy games are acceptable for a player?

QUOTE (Tex @ Apr 17, 2012 -> 06:57 PM) Of course but wouldn't "bad day" be relative for each of those players? 0/5 with 4ks is pretty much the same no matter how much you're getting paid. -
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Apr 17, 2012 -> 07:30 PM) The only reason I throw that out there is it seems like the type of deal we would get for Becks if he doesn't recover. At the end of this year, that might well make sense.

QUOTE (Lillian @ Apr 17, 2012 -> 06:35 PM) If that's the case, then apparently Gordon isn't a very good "student". His approach is nothing like Paulie's, and it's just plain bad!!! Like 2k5 said...Beckham probably has 36 different voices telling him things to do to fix his approach every week. Mimicking another player is usually not going to work for a guy anyway.
-
QUOTE (Lillian @ Apr 17, 2012 -> 06:25 PM) It baffles me that a guy like Beckham wouldn't go to a "professional hitter" like Konerko, who has such sound mechanics, and ask him for help. Then, if I were Gordon, I'd just scrap everything I was doing, and try to emmulate Paulie. I'd figure, "how could I go wrong with that approach?" Paulie is so fundamentally sound, in his approach. Why not? According to Beckham, he spends a ton of time with Konerko and they have gone over things like that.

QUOTE (Lillian @ Apr 17, 2012 -> 06:19 PM) I can't think of an example as a precedent, but wouldn't a team like the Yankees, Red Sox or Angels shell out half a season's worth of salary, no matter how large, to acquire a starting pitcher for the chance to go to the Post Season, and then have a formidable rotation for the Playoffs? Of course, it all depends upon how well Peavy is pitching at the time. For them to shell out $12 million, he'd have to be having an incredible season. The Red Sox, btw, seem like they're doing everything they can to stay under the luxury tax, so count them out. The Yankees are 7 deep in their rotation if Pettitte can give them anything, so at best, count them as "Unlikely". The Angels...maybe...but they're still not likely to pick up $12 million. I could see it possibly happening if Peavy is having a real good season and the Sox pick up $6 million of what remains...but that's a huge amount of money for the Sox to send along with a player, and they just haven't done that for anyone.

Vikings stadium funding vote fails in Minnesota State House committee.
-
QUOTE (Lillian @ Apr 17, 2012 -> 06:07 PM) Why not play to win, and if they're not competing by the All Star break, and Peavy has held up and pitched well, trade him for prospects then? That is probably K. W.'s plan. It's going to be really hard to get any prospects for Peavy even if he's pitching well. We might be able to move him, but it would almost certainly require the Sox taking up a large portion of that money 2k5 just referred to, and others have convinced me that it would really be unprecedented for the Sox to do that, even if they saved some on the deal.

QUOTE (Soxfest @ Apr 17, 2012 -> 05:39 PM) They cannot do any worse. So we're 5-4 with these guys not possibly being able to do any worse, and this season with a new manager being keyed by whether or not these guys are developing. Great. Seems like a surefire case for playing them everyday to me. -
QUOTE (knightni @ Apr 17, 2012 -> 05:33 PM) Lincecum's power comes from his specific throwing motion and leg push. There has to be a mechanical issue that's messing that up. There was a story a couple years ago when he had that bad first half that he really started working hard on his leg strength, running bleachers and such, and that happened right when he had a great close to the season. I wouldn't be shocked if he just was getting older and reaching that "hey, now I actually have to work out to be able to pitch" stage either.

Balta1701 replied to Texsox's topic in Pale Hose Talk
What's their job on a team? If a guy is getting paid $25 million to carry an offense/pitching staff on a contending team, there's not a lot of leeway, the guy better be Halladaying it. If a guy is a 25 year old on a rebuilding team, then my answer is completely different. -
QUOTE (pcullotta @ Apr 17, 2012 -> 04:54 PM) It's really easy to compare him to Brian Anderson at this point. BA got to 862 plate appearances with the Sox before everyone realized he was never going to hit. Beckham is already up to 1,514. That's hard for me to believe but he's gone up to the plate 1,514 times and still looks lost. He's not just going to figure it out. He's a bad hitter. That's about it. Jose Bautista had 2038 PA's over 5 years and put up a .730 OPS during that time before becoming a monster, and that was with a lot more time on the bench/time to work with hitting coaches. Alex Gordon had 1642 PA's over 4 years, including a couple injury shortened stints and plenty of time in the minors, before snapping out and putting up a >.800 OPS last year (with a .733 OPS during those first 4 years too). This does happen. Gordon Beckham is a 25 year old. If he were an MLB rookie right now...he wouldn't be behind schedule

Collective anger against Beckham/Morel/Dunn/Rios thread
Balta1701 replied to caulfield12's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Apr 17, 2012 -> 03:05 PM) I don't, at least not yet. Unless Ventura/Parent/Manto think so, I give him time to prove himself. For me the clock started over with the new administration. This group genuinely needs to be showing progress by the end of 2013 and on the doorstep of contending. If Beckham is likely to be non-tendered after that point as a 2nd year arb player (which he would be if he's hitting like this), that is a major failure and one that could rank very highly on things that will cost everyone their jobs.
