Worst Farm System in Baseball
QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Nov 1, 2011 -> 10:27 AM) Why shouldn't hard slotting happen? I can only see good coming from it. Because: 1. Several of the teams with high revenues like having the small market teams unwilling/unable to compete for big money players. I don't think the Angels are mad about Jared Weaver falling to them because of signability. 2. The players don't want limits to signing revenue to decrease the earnings of the new players coming in.

Small cars...
QUOTE (JorgeFabregas @ Nov 1, 2011 -> 10:21 AM) I have a 2003 Honda Insight that I drive to work. It pushes 60 MPG in the summer. It's a two-seater Hybrid, but is much sturdier than something like a Smart Car or a Miata. Our family car is a 1999 Civic (four door). At least based on my experiences, I think the post-05 Civics are a lot roomier as a "Family car" than the previous generations. Probably the same for other vehicles in that class also.

Small cars...
QUOTE (iamshack @ Nov 1, 2011 -> 10:11 AM) I would absolutely love to get a Leaf as rarely do I ever make trips exceeding 10-20 miles at a time, and I did finally move out of the condo I was leasing and bought my own home, so I could get the charger installed. Unfortunately, I have a huge dog with another coming in a few months that I take to the park almost every day, and so I need something bigger. Been struggling to find the perfect dogmobile for a few months now. It's amazing that SUV's and trucks are back so quickly. It wasn't more than 3-4 years ago that auto industry analysts were saying the SUV would be extinct and would never be a mainstream automobile again, due to fuel costs. I remember going with my friend to buy his pickup truck and they were practically giving them away...he got like $10k off MSRP or something ridiculous. How short the memories of Americans can be. If the Volt/Spark/Electric Prius/Leaf really take off, it won't be more than a couple years until larger plug-in vehicles are available to do things like haul a large dog. I still like having the turning radius though.

Small cars...
If you watch any car commercials during football ads, they definitely try to sell there being a "Man card" on having a big engine in a pickup truck or SUV. Personally though, I always feel more excited about an exceptional turning radius or various other technologies. One thing I learned about the Nissan Leaf, for example, is that while it's plugged in, you can either set it on a schedule or use a smartphone to have it turn on the heater/air conditioner, so that the car is already warmed/cooled 10 minutes before you get into it, and you don't burn the battery doing so. Still one of the most intelligent things I've heard of in a car, that would make every day easier for me.

2011-2012 OFFICIAL NBA LOCKOUT thread
QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Nov 1, 2011 -> 09:45 AM) Fortunately every other team in the NBA will have the same problem That's one thing the Bulls planned for fairly well...even if they were disappointed by Bogans, Korver, Brewer...they had them all for 2 years, so that they didn't have to panic-assemble a roster after the lockout.

2011-2012 OFFICIAL NBA LOCKOUT thread
If there ever is an offseason... The combination of an amnesty clause, a surviving mid-level exemption, and a surviving luxury tax system could work out great for the Bulls.

Official 2011-2012 NFL Thread
QUOTE (iamshack @ Nov 1, 2011 -> 09:34 AM) We get the Chargers' broadcast here in Vegas since we don't have an NFL team and a lot of people have adopted them. Their announcers last night keep saying he is just not right. People can point to the injuries they have had at their skill positions but I seem to remember them being a lot more beat up last year at times and yet Rivers was still lighting everyone up. The Chargers had 1 game last year where Gates, Jackson, and Rivers all started, I believe. Maybe Rivers was one of the lockout partiers.

grady sizemore
QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Nov 1, 2011 -> 09:16 AM) Right knee (I read report of microfracture surgery, which is really never a good sign) as well as surgery for a sports hernia. I'd avoid Sizemore like the plague. 2 hernia surgeries.

Financial News
QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Nov 1, 2011 -> 08:49 AM) This really sucks for many of the people that work there. The brokerage side of the business, retail and institutional, was actually making money and doing fine. This is purely about the foreign and sovereign debt plays they made. I know a few folks over there from back in the EDF Man days. This doesn't seem very nice of them.

Frasor $3.75M Option Picked Up
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 1, 2011 -> 09:01 AM) Who was the last team to pick up someone's option to trade them that same winter? I don't ever remember that happening. I can't recall it happening either...I'd imagine they're looking more towards June if that happens. Probably in no small part based on any discussions they had regarding him or their other relievers this year.

Frasor $3.75M Option Picked Up
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 1, 2011 -> 09:00 AM) I want to see the rest of the off-season to say that. If we trade off a bunch of parts and don't bring Buehrle back, then I will agree. If we pretty much stay "all-in", it makes sense. It makes sense if they think he's tradeable.

grady sizemore
QUOTE (Greyone @ Nov 1, 2011 -> 03:13 AM) I'd bring him in and see if Herm can work his magic. He is younger than Dye when we brought him in, and still has a lot of talent. I'm not sure what he is recovering from so that could be a huge warning, but it couldn't hurt to see if the Sox can rehab him. Sprained ankle, sprained groin, elbow surgery, abdomen surgery due to a hernia, microfracture surgery on his knee, knee contusion, 2nd surgery for sports hernia. Basically, he's recovering from...everything.

2011-12 White Sox off season catch all thread
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 1, 2011 -> 08:56 AM) That is my biggest worry. I don't think there is any doubt that Frank is a first ballot guy IMO. But looking at the people on the ballot with him, that scares me. Taking the whole "first ballot" mentality, and adding to it the whole "exclusivity" argument, (I could see some people only voting for 2-3 guys), plus he wasn't a favorite guy amongst the media, it could be close. I think the "Wasn't a favorite by the media" will be balanced out by the "called out the juicers" part.

QUOTE (Kalapse @ Oct 31, 2011 -> 06:46 PM) And meanwhile looking at the voting of the sane: Buehrle wins his 3rd consecutive Fielding Bible award by the largest margin of any player over R.A. Dickey and AJ does not receive a single point, unlike his teammates Quentin (2 points) and Pierre (1 point). Morel finished 9th at 3B showing up on 7 of 10 ballots, 21 points, with his highest finish being 6th on Doug Glanville's list. Beckham also finished 9th at 2B with 26 points, 8 of 10 ballots, 2nd on Glanville's list. Alexei finished 8th at SS, 31 points, 7 of 10 ballots, 3rd on Hal Richman's list, 5th on Neyer's. No points for Konerko, Rios or any other Sox pitchers. Full list of winners: C Weiters 1B Pujols 2B Pedroia 3B Beltre SS Tulo LF Gardner CF Austin Jackson RF Upton P Buehrle http://www.fieldingbible.com/complete-votetally.asp Seriously...how far was Beckham behind these guys in the fielding stats?

2011-12 White Sox off season catch all thread
QUOTE (Cali @ Nov 1, 2011 -> 02:25 AM) By the way, it's sucks, but Frank has about a 1% chance of being on the 1st ballot. There are STILL old codger f***s who think no one is first ballot ever. Couple that with the DH thing and it's second ballot for sure. Blows, but it's the truth. Even with the steroid thing bumping him up. Roberto Alomar got 73.7% on his first ballot, second time through 90%. How did his career somehow get 16.3% better in one year? They'll let Maddux and Glavine in. They'll go in as teammates. It'll be a nice story, but it'll be 2015 for the Hurt. Roberto Alomar's first ballot miss was also judged in part to be a good quantity of voters punishing him for having spat in an umpire's face

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Nov 1, 2011 -> 03:52 AM) How many missed opportunities does it take for you to be offended that Thomas isn't inducted? I think for me, I start getting a bit pissed off after 3, and I am up in arms after 5. This is all hypothetical, I am going to be surprised if he's not inducted on the 2nd go around. And if anything, it'd be cool on 3 because he'd be inducted with Griffey. I'll be significantly frustrated at 1.
