  1. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Oct 7, 2011 -> 01:25 PM) You should. Your only argument is that the guy hasnt managed and so he hasnt done manager type things as a manager. You know what, there are plenty of better options out there then with your criteria, I bet Jerry Manuel would like a job again. Was Bob Brenly a better option? I am sick and tired of failed manager retreads, this hire was outside the box yet people actually in the baseball industry are saying it was a good hire. I bet fans on a message board have alot more exposure to Robin's history and demeanor than those people. Let me ask you this...if we come up with several people in the "baseball industry" who are shocked/stunned by this hire and openly question it, would that mean that you'd have to judge it as a bad hire?
  2. QUOTE (chw42 @ Oct 7, 2011 -> 01:27 PM) So does anyone know anything about Ventura's mindset as a manager? Does he play small ball, does he favor statistics, is he somewhat in between? Or is he such a WTF hire that nobody knows? Nobody has a clue. Maybe he'll push people to try to beat Dimaggio's hit streak record. THat'd be fun.
  3. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Oct 7, 2011 -> 12:58 PM) You're telling me it's a bad idea to avoid picking someone who's been actively involved with a baseball organization from a day-to-day standpoint by managing/coaching and instead going with a guy that has done virtually nothing in the game since he played many years ago? Uh...yes?
  4. QUOTE (chw42 @ Oct 7, 2011 -> 01:08 PM) The more all this stuff leaks out, the more I think JR was a major reason why we wasted $127 million this season. I think I've been suggesting that for a while.
  5. QUOTE (SOXOBAMA @ Oct 7, 2011 -> 12:44 PM) I believe that Pete Rose had a pretty good damn record as Mgr... Except in games where he bet against the Reds.
  6. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Oct 7, 2011 -> 12:48 PM) Workout routines??? Ya, I bet managers really draw those up not the team of qualified trainers. I'm sure he had thoughts on all of those other points when he was a veteran player but it wasnt his role to actually carry it out. And cutting a player is the GM's call FYI. So either you're deliberately missing the point or you're accidentally defending Ozzie Guillen.
  7. You guys need to appreciate unintended irony more.
  8. Westboro Baptist Church announces they will protest Jobs's funeral. Sent announcement out using Twitter for iPhone.
  9. QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Oct 7, 2011 -> 12:29 PM) How? Ventura will be nothing but a professional. But still, by his own admission, he had no real serious thoughts or plans to manage until the Sox offered him the job. That's simply not an effective way to run a business to my eyes.
  10. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Oct 7, 2011 -> 12:42 PM) During those 2000 games was he ever asked to discipline a trouble maker? Was he asked to yank a player for dogging it? Has he ever pulled a pitcher that wanted to stay in the game? Has he ever dealt with an under-performing starter with an up and coming bench player in their shadow? Did he have to create workout routines for spring training? Decide how many at bats/innings the player who struggled last year needs to get? Decide when to cut and run on a struggling guy versus giving him another shot?
  11. QUOTE (fathom @ Oct 7, 2011 -> 11:46 AM) So you had a GM and Manager that hated each other, a Manager and a pitching coach that didn't trust each other, and players that were pissed about all the drama going on? I am definitely excited for a new era of White Sox baseball with the focus is on the field and not off of it. Really...Robin Ventura being added to the Kenny Williams mix suggests to you that the focus will be back "On the field an d not off it"?
  12. This is just a whole lotta ugh feeling. Greenberg.
  13. QUOTE (Tex @ Oct 7, 2011 -> 11:11 AM) I'm embarrased a scientist such as yourself would even post that. GMAB man. If its a hire designed to appease the average fan, the "unscientific poll" at the tribune is closer to the "Average fan" than anything I'm posting here. In that sense, the invormation is at least useful in evaluating the claim. If you'd like to foot the several thousand dollar bill to put a scientific poll out in the field, we can get started as soon as the check clears.
  14. QUOTE (fathom @ Oct 7, 2011 -> 11:07 AM) Listening to Cooper talk, it really makes you feel like KW and Ozzie were really lacking in focus this past season with regards to what took place on the field. Very disappointing Everyone knew that about Ozzie except his most ardent defenders. KW though?
  15. QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Oct 7, 2011 -> 11:03 AM) Do you agree that this was also a PR move to garner the good will of fans who loved him as a player? Here's the current stats on the Tribune nonscientific poll. (Results not scientific)
  16. QUOTE (flavum @ Oct 7, 2011 -> 11:06 AM) So basically Ventura will grow into the job over the next couple years while the team struggles concurrently, and we'll know if he can manage a contending team in 2014. If this team struggles, especially with some of the egos already on the roster and in the front office, it's hard to see him lasting 3 years. When the Bulls contracted their bad case of VDN, it only lasted for 2, and even then everyone knew it was done after 1.5.
  17. QUOTE (justBLAZE @ Oct 7, 2011 -> 10:59 AM) I guess we can bump this in a year to see how many of us PREDICTED right or wrong, because we clearly won't know until then. I really dislike this line of thinking here. This is a gamble with what seems to me to be very poor odds. Poor odd gambles sometimes turn out right. If you went and bout $200k worth of lottery tickets, you still don't have a good shot at winning, but it seems like a great idea in the off chance that it works.
  18. QUOTE (elrockinMT @ Oct 7, 2011 -> 10:51 AM) If he is having a good year I woud keep CQ. We need power in our line up and CQ provides that and he also provides the hard charging emotion that I think Robin Ventura provided as a player. Quiet and determined. Trade CQ without repalcing that intangible as well as the tangible and this team continues to falter. There is nobody in our system that I am aware of that can provide the bat CQ has and we would lose with a trade. Trade him and you just open up another hole. If that intangible was so valuable, it sure didn't come through on the 2009-2011 teams.
  19. That's already happened. I don't work for the financial industry.
  20. Really, you're correct. The biggest problem in this country is that we are too educated.
  21. QUOTE (klaus kinski @ Oct 7, 2011 -> 09:41 AM) Coop-"Players were fed up with a lot of things." That much was pretty obvious.

  24. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 7, 2011 -> 08:52 AM) This is the most important part. Right now I am pissed beyond all belief. I have been this mad with the organization twice. Once with the Brandon Mccarthy deal, and once when they let Robin walk away by offering a joke of a contract. Maybe he will turn out OK, but if you really want Ventura to manage, make him the bench coach for a few years next to someone with at least some coaching experience. Or let him manage in the minors. Don't make him the manager from day one. This is just awful. You remember how much of the season we spent complaining about the seeming complete lack of professionalism coming from the front office? The lack of respect for the people watching the games, paying their bills, etc.? I thought we'd gotten rid of most of that when we got rid of Ozzie...but this move reeks of the same ethos. I feel like this is a giant middle finger at me.
  25. QUOTE (MexSoxFan#1 @ Oct 6, 2011 -> 11:58 PM) Tigers showing the Twins how you beat the Yankees, f*** you Minnesota!! The Yankees left what, 11 men on base last night? Their big names were something like 3/28 in this series with RISP.
