QUOTE (WilliamTell @ Aug 31, 2011 -> 04:18 PM) That's the Rios of 2010 It sounds like the ball was out over the plate. He's been able to hit that ball this year, because he's trying to pull everything anyway.

QUOTE (fathom @ Aug 31, 2011 -> 04:11 PM) Oh please...hitting like a pansy = being scared to strike out and just going up there just trying to make soft contact. Clearly you're still not getting it. Both DJ and Melton are saying he's stronger than what he's showed. You're contending that he's not strong enough to play the position in the first place. Neither of them agree with you.

QUOTE (fathom @ Aug 31, 2011 -> 04:06 PM) Yep, and now we have Melton and DJ being critical of how defensive he is at the plate this week. swing and a miss.

QUOTE (fathom @ Aug 31, 2011 -> 04:05 PM) I'd love to know the pitch selection breakdown from Garland's good years. I don't recall him throwing more a ton of sliders. Pitch FX has him at 60-65 % fastballs (2 and 4 seam) every year since 2007 (first year of data).

QUOTE (fathom @ Aug 31, 2011 -> 04:02 PM) It's not, as I said yesterday they need to have him scrap that terrible slip pitch he throws and just work on being a sinker pitcher (aka Jon Garland). Garland also threw a bunch of offspeed stuff.

QUOTE (fathom @ Aug 31, 2011 -> 04:01 PM) And balta, Beckham/Hudson/Floyd/Danks all showed potential to at least be average players in the majors when they were younger. Morel just seems far too weak to be a starting third baseman in the majors. To me, seems like you're putting your team at a big disadvantage to be lacking pop at a corner infield position. There's still no physical reason why Morel can't be a 15-20 HR a year guy once he learns how to be a big league hitter.

DJ discussing how he thinks Morel's approach at the plate has been too conservative and he thinks he needs to be more aggressive and use his strength more.

QUOTE (fathom @ Aug 31, 2011 -> 03:59 PM) And with better coaching/adjustments, Beckham/Stewart/Hudson's issues were/are easily fixable. However, too many stubborn people in Sox organization. I don't remember many people saying Danks stuff wasn't that good either. And yet, earlier in this thread you said that Stewart's stuff wasn't impressive.

QUOTE (CaliSoxFanViaSWside @ Aug 31, 2011 -> 03:56 PM) I'd do that in a NY minute. It knocks $20 million off the White sox's obligations.

QUOTE (fathom @ Aug 31, 2011 -> 03:43 PM) or you can tell with your own eyes that right now, Morel shouldn't be in the majors if he's going to hit like a pansy. Balta has thrown out every possible statistic he can this year to try and make it seem like Morel has been a complete failure...but outside of drawing a few more walks, it's gotten worse due to his defense struggling of late. Gordon Beckham can't hit a good fastball. He doesn't belong in the big leagues. Zach Stewart doesn't look impressive and he has not repeatability on his delivery. He doesn't belong in the big leagues. Daniel Hudson is doing nothing but nibbling on the corners. He doesn't belong in the big leagues. Gavin Floyd's only good starts were against Detroit and they hit the ball very close to the wall a lot. He doesn't belong in the big leagues. John Danks wore out down the stretch and his stuff was never that impressive anyway. He doesn't belong in the big leagues.

QUOTE (fathom @ Aug 31, 2011 -> 03:39 PM) Disagree, Morel's offense would never be considered "fine". Yea, this performance would be bad. THAT IS HOW YOU DEVELOP YOUNG PLAYERS. You can't simultaneously tell me that the Sox need to trade Danks because he'll be expensive soon and then complain when young players struggle.

QUOTE (fathom @ Aug 31, 2011 -> 03:37 PM) Brent Morel, flat out, is not a major league caliber hitter to me. I'm fine going into next year with Beckham batting 9th, but if he has an even worse, weaker hitter behind him, then your offense is likely to suck. And you know as well as I do that if the Sox had a normal season from Dunn and Rios, their offense would be fine.

QUOTE (fathom @ Aug 31, 2011 -> 03:35 PM) No one is worse than Morel with regards to that. Bill Melton was laughing at his approach the other day on the radio, saying how defensive it is. Totally agreed. He's established that he can put the bat on the ball but he needs to swing more aggressively. When he does, he has plenty of power, but he's scared to use it. He literally needs to lift and pull.- 8/31 GT - SOX vs. Twins - 1:10pm CDT - WGN
QUOTE (fathom @ Aug 31, 2011 -> 03:34 PM) 2nd base is a position where replacement level players are traditionally cheap. I clearly said if Beckham still had significant trade value, as maybe there's a team out there that will think they can turn him around. You absolutely cannot have him and Morel both in the lineup with Walker still here next year. This is why working in young talent is rough...because people lose patience way too rapidly.- 8/31 GT - SOX vs. Twins - 1:10pm CDT - WGN
QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Aug 31, 2011 -> 03:33 PM) Morel actually would be more productive with the "lift and pull" approach of Ramirez/Quentin/Rios/Beckham arguably. Game over in DET. I think Beckham is looking way too much to hit the ball to RF.- 8/31 GT - SOX vs. Twins - 1:10pm CDT - WGN
QUOTE (fathom @ Aug 31, 2011 -> 03:28 PM) If Beckham still has significant trade value left, you have got to look into dealing him this offseason. He's another year away from full-out bust territory. No you don't, unless you think that Tyler Kuhn is your opening day 2b next year right now and you want him in the lineup. If he full-out busts, he full out busts. Let him do it here.- 8/31 GT - SOX vs. Twins - 1:10pm CDT - WGN
QUOTE (fathom @ Aug 31, 2011 -> 03:26 PM) Flowers beginning to fade after the hot start. Needs to make a lot more contact than he does, no doubt about it. Flowers was never going to support that .350+ BABIP, we all knew that. But there's every reason to think he can hold a .320 BABIP since he hits balls in play hard, and if he can hit enough HR's, he'll still come out as a .250+ hitter.- 8/31 GT - SOX vs. Twins - 1:10pm CDT - WGN
QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Aug 31, 2011 -> 03:23 PM) It's fitting that yet another former Sox player (Betemit) has come back to make KW look stupid... Really, I don't think anyone is calling KW stupid for letting Betemit go. If they are, I'll call them stupid.- The Republican Thread
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 31, 2011 -> 03:13 PM) We have negative bond rates because the fed has spend trillions itself, which also hasn't worked. And Bond Rates now are lower than they were when the Fed was spending that money.- The Republican Thread
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 31, 2011 -> 02:58 PM) The step right before that is 1929 to 1940, where you spend loads of money, and it still doesn't push the economy into a real recovery, and you end up having to cut anyway because there is no economic activity. And then there's 1940-1945, where we spend loads of money and it pushes the economy into a real recovery.- 8/31 GT - SOX vs. Twins - 1:10pm CDT - WGN
