White Sox vs Rockies 7:40 CT first pitch
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jun 29, 2011 -> 08:44 PM) Pierre is very streaky. He may hit .500 the next 2 weeks. Hopefully, he can start running. He hasn't stolen a base since June 1. I don't think we want him to run.

Rios benched for Lilli
QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jun 29, 2011 -> 08:28 PM) http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/baseb...0,3398645.story Ozzie officially backtracking completely on the idea he was sending message specifically to Rios and not to the rest of the team. Hmmm. Doesn't make sense to single out ONE player, then cite examples that he hasn't hustled before, then turn around and say you're directing your anger about it towards the whole team. No wonder our organization is foundering in complete disarray. At this point now he's back covering for his player. probably as he should be.

The GREAT Daniel Hudson
QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Jun 29, 2011 -> 08:16 PM) As much as this topic annoys me, it's still kind of funny how badly it's gone so far. And that despite how amazing Jackson was for the sox last year.

QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Jun 29, 2011 -> 08:04 PM) i will give you weaver, lohse, suppan and franklin last season, but westbrook wasnt anything special last season when he came over, and his era is over 5 now. carpenter was a highly regarded prospect with the blue jays he just had arm problems, just like he has had with the cardinals. and jason marqius was exactly what he always was, a hot starter that faded so much in the second half that larussa benched him in the playoffs during their world series run. i think a big differenxe in the players you mentioned and the players coop rehabilitated is that most of coops projects have maintained their success, and half of duncans guys fell off the next season Fell off the next season...unlike Loaiza and Contreras.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jun 29, 2011 -> 07:43 PM) Great so where are all the convictions for voting machine fraud, after all of the complaining that was done about it? A solid point, I can't cite a single confirmed case of electronic voting machine fraud. Best I can do is point at the 2000 election, where poor voting machines probably delivered Pat Buchanan 20000 votes that should have gone to Al Gore. But hy, right guy still won, so there, no need to get that part right.

QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Jun 29, 2011 -> 06:10 PM) I don't think there's a consensus, as we're talking pitching coaches here. But nobody sounds silly if they declare Duncan the best. That's all I was asking. I certainly am not going to tell someone they're wrong if they say Duncan is the best, but I was just asking if there was an overwhelming consensus that I was unaware of. Your answer is no. He's clearly among the best at the very worst.

QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Jun 29, 2011 -> 05:54 PM) Kyle Lohse. The end. They've gotten two above league-average seasons (including this year) and another right around league-average season out of him in three of the last four years. And he sucks. I say this with supreme confidence. Phil Humber, Gavin Floyd, Matt Thornton, Jose Contreras, Esteban Loaiza isn't a good comeback, just from the example I'm most familiar with?

And in that case of a person who is concerned about the integrity of the voting process...we would obviously expect that person to be able to provide us with a long, concrete series of cases where the voter registration process failed to prevent voter fraud but where an additional state-issued ID requirement would have done so. Otherwise, that person is insisting upon standards that he or she is admitting are solving a non-existent problem. To use your example...if I came to you and told you that anthropogenic climate change was a problem due that could be solved by reducing the atmospheric CO2 content, a reasonable question to ask in reply is "has atmospheric CO2 actually gone up by a substantial amount?" If the answer was "no", you might question why we need to remove CO2 from the atmosphere if CO2 in the atmosphere is not increasing.

QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Jun 29, 2011 -> 05:40 PM) Ryan Franklin released by St. Louis. Before we start the "Coop can fix 'em" chants, let's remember that the best pitching coach in the league got what he could out of his garbage arm, and I think he's done if Duncan can do no more. Is it generally accepted that Duncan is the best coach in the league? I'm not saying he's not excellent, I'm asking if there's consensus that he's the clear and away #1.

Sox "trying to get a return on investment"
QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Jun 29, 2011 -> 05:16 PM) And this is why I've come to realize that BA is overrated. And Ozzie has had to play mix and match with Morel all year. I don't believe for a second he could hit .282 over a sustained period playing every day. This is a guy who hit .305 in the minor leagues overall and .322 last year between Birmingham and Charlotte. He's on pace to strike out about 60 times in a 500 at bat season if he got that. If he put up a BABIP of .310 and never homered, he'd hit .276.

Sox "trying to get a return on investment"
QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Jun 29, 2011 -> 05:05 PM) Morel's production has been horrid. Even for a rookie. The defense has been fine. But no sub-.600 OPS is acceptable at any position outside of maybe catcher, and that's only if he's Yadier Molina-esque behind the plate. If Morel is acceptable, than '06 Brian Anderson was acceptable. And he most definitely wasn't acceptable. In 2006, especially in the 2nd half, I thought Anderson was acceptable, and I'll go to my grave saying we win that division if he'd played every day after June 1. Morel's hitting .282 since May 1. The OPS is still putrid so don't ask, but when you also take into account the league averages...the league average OPS on the season is .684. This is another position where the numbers have gone way, way down from the steroid era. Chris Johnson from Houston is hitting .244 on the season and has put up a .685 OPS...he's basically the average 3b right now with the bat. Since May 1, Brent's OPS would be the 22nd best in the league for what teams are getting out of 3b. It's not good, but the league's production isn't good this year either. If I go to May 7, Brent's OPS is .673. Since May 7, Brent morel has almost been a league-average 3b.

QUOTE (ChiSox_Sonix @ Jun 29, 2011 -> 04:53 PM) Is Danks really "much less value" than Greinke though? They've been known to overpay before. And it is a position of strength for them at the moment as well - he's not their only future catcher, and scouts are in love with Sanchez. Especially if Tampa makes a move and Colon and Hughes don't come back I could see them biting. Before this season, Danks was quite a bit less value than Greinke. The only argument that Greinke wasn't much more valuable than Danks is that Greinke might have struggled to pitch in NYC. Based on their performance the last 2 years, Greinke was a much, much better pitcher than Danks. Then...Danks started the season 0-8. Yea, he put together 3 solid outings to break that streak. Then...he got hurt for the first time in his career. Danks's value has dropped at least somewhat since the start of this season. It hasn't plummeted, but I'd have paid a bunch more for Danks in March than I'd pay for him right now.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jun 29, 2011 -> 04:42 PM) The key to all of this is Tampa. If they could somehow push the Yankees to 3rd place, you could very well see the Yankees "overpay" to get another top half pitcher or even two. Does Tampa still need LH hitting DH's? I think we have one available.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jun 29, 2011 -> 04:44 PM) So even if that process is 99% accurate, that means literally thousands of fraudulent names remain. So, if 99% of all ID's are real, then we still have a major problem at the polling place. Clearly, the photo ID check is worthless.

2011 White Sox Catch-All Thread
Let me say it another way then...if his stock hasn't plummeted, then the Yankees would need to be willing to get much less value for him now than only a few months ago despite thinking that he's an excellent catcher candidate. I don't see both of those being true.

QUOTE (fathom @ Jun 29, 2011 -> 04:28 PM) Yes, but it's hard to say that 60 live game pitches is same as throwing in between games. I know the Sox put some thought into it, just seemed to be a good spot where he could have been pushed back to Friday and let Jackson go tomorrow. I don't think I said it was the same as throwing in-between games...I think I said that from last Saturday to tomorrow he's on normal rest...4 days. That means the short-rest outing was when he came out on Saturday...so from Saturday he's been able to do the usual 4 day rest routine.

Very interesting. There appears to have been a mini-tsunami in Southern England yesterday and no one is quite sure about the source.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jun 29, 2011 -> 04:25 PM) When you have organizations adding untold numbers of fraudulent registrations, there is a really good reason for wanting to be sure that your process is honest and accurate. Looking the other way only encourages fraud. Of course, then one might note the fact that registration groups are required by law to turn over every registration received to registrars (for very good reason in fact) and say that no one is looking the other way...that's why voter registration forms are actually examined then processed. If we were looking the other way, Homer Simpson would be registered to vote about 400x per city.

QUOTE (fathom @ Jun 29, 2011 -> 04:24 PM) Lost in the controversy about Tuesday's game is what seems to be the silly decision to start Peavy tomorrow instead of letting him go on Friday. Let's hope he's still in one piece after tomorrow's game. Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, then going on Thursday? That's normal rest from throwing on Saturday right? And although yeah he worked Saturday, he only dealt like 60ish pitches right?

The Democrat Thread
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jun 29, 2011 -> 04:16 PM) The only problem with that is you have no idea how effective ID is because there is no reporting of people who are legitimately turned away, or otherwise don't even try to vote because they know they can't get away with it. You only hear the very few people who complain, and even in those cases they can take a provisional ballot and vote anyway, and prove that they are indeed legitimate. So the reality is that no one should be "disenfranchised" by these rules. That is entirely propaganda. But that turns around. You don't know how much its' needed, because if you actually try to point to the numbers of legitimate fraud cases, they're miniscule. You get a guy or two every term and they usually get caught. So you have to point to this nebulous "voter fraud epidemic" without evidence for it (other than Democrats being elected, of course), lump in things like Voter Registration Fraud (a much more common problem but one that never carries over to the polling place), etc.

QUOTE (ChiSox_Sonix @ Jun 29, 2011 -> 04:00 PM) So i clearly thought they tried to acquire him mid-season instead of during the off-season and had his contract status messed up. I also made two other points as to why that proposal was not ridiculous but apparently the mix-up was the only thing worth taking out of it. Ok, let me ask you this on the other points. If Montero's available, it's only because his value has plummeted in Yankee eyes. Would you have confidence in him recovering that value after being traded to the Sox, or would you instead expect him to go Brandon Wood on us?
