Adam Dunn: The Least Exciting Player Ever
QUOTE (Chet Kincaid @ Jun 29, 2011 -> 09:55 AM) Holy s*** how could that be overlooked? I remember that. Konerko sucked big time. I think it happened right after he called out Frank Thomas about something. That really puts things in perspective though. I hope Dunn gets it together real soon. Let's also remember one more time that Konerko was coming off a fracture in his foot and was playing with pain that whole season.

2011 White Sox Catch-All Thread
QUOTE (Real @ Jun 29, 2011 -> 12:46 PM) We have a piece for Montero from the Yankees, his name is John Danks. Danks for Montero + Gardner ? The Yankees wouldn't give up Montero for Greinke last offseason. Now they're going to give up Montero + Gardner for a guy on the DL with an oblique issue who had 2 really bad months to start the season.

Rios benched for Lilli
QUOTE (The Baconator @ Jun 29, 2011 -> 11:37 AM) This is an honest (and not loaded) question: at what point do we put Rios on waivers, and does anyone bite? I have a real curiosity regarding the gamesmanship of placing a player on waivers. I've read in the past that almost everyone goes on waivers at some point but we just don't hear about it. I think I recall reading some posters on here that speculated that even players like Paulie were placed on waivers at some point, just not publicly. If that's the case, does the GM and manager let a player know they are being placed on waivers (even however unlikely they are claimed), and how does that affect how the player feels toward the team. I imagine that if Rios is placed on waivers and no one bites he would then be pretty upset with the organization, and it may further affect his hustle. Not arguing should it be done but CAN it be done? Rios will be put on waivers sometime in August, and no on ewill bite. Every player is put on waivers at some point, you are correct. If they pass through waivers unclaimed they then become tradeable again, so there is no downside to doing so. A GM will never tell a player they're put on waivers unless they're actually claimed. Mark Buehrle was put on waivers in August 2005, for crying out loud.

QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Jun 29, 2011 -> 12:03 PM) Indeed. You'd have to be blind to not have noticed this trend. I still want to see what he does as an everyday player for a month or two. He's had a bad month after 2 spectacular months, all of them as a part time player though. He doesn't need to put up a 1.000+ OPS like he did in April/May to be effective.

Pools
QUOTE (Y2HH @ Jun 29, 2011 -> 11:45 AM) After you get the essentials...which of course depends on the type of pool you get, maintaining it is very cheap and very easy. Essentials: filter, vacuum, solar cover, off-season cover/bubble (which of course may not be as necessary in FL). Maintenance: Shock treatment, PH increaser/decreaser, slow release chlorine tablets. These don't cost all that much, but I don't have prices off the top of my head. So, it probably costs me ~10$ to maintain it per month. People tend to overshock their pools, which is a waste. They sell testers, and so long as your levels read normal, there is no need to re-shock the water every week like a lot of people do, even when it's not necessary. If you're running a filter the electricity cost is probably on the order $10 a month on its own, but you're not directly seeing that as a line-item even though you are paying it. (You see, oh, my electric bill went up in the summer, that's air conditioning right?) People shock their pool every week? THat sounds painful.

Financial News
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jun 29, 2011 -> 09:53 AM) Top 1% responsible for 20%, and top 5% responsible for 47.5%, bottom 50% only gets 3% of total... Nope, not wealth, health care spending. http://content.usatoday.com/communities/on...011/06/study-/1 Full study at link http://nihcm.org/images/stories/NIHCM-CostBrief-Email.pdf I think the answer to our health care problems are simple. Let the sick ones die.

The Democrat Thread
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jun 29, 2011 -> 11:24 AM) It never ceases to amaze me how little voting is done in local elections. Our local primaries saw 4500 votes in a town of 30000. The answer to this is stricter voter ID controls.

2011-2012 OFFICIAL NBA LOCKOUT thread
QUOTE (maggsmaggs @ Jun 29, 2011 -> 11:34 AM) http://blog.mysanantonio.com/spursnation/2...owners-players/ Dear god that would be awful. Just as a reference point, the Bulls payroll for 2011-2012 is $60,726,162 for ONLY 10 players (Boozer, Deng, Rose, Noah, Korver, Brewer, Watson, Asik, Bogans and Gibson). And the Bulls have to re-sign Rose to a max deal. This is gonna be a long long long winter without any basketball. Remember...whatever the "Max deal" is would obviously change in this situation (no team can get by with a guy on a $17 million deal if the cap is $45 million).

2011-2012 OFFICIAL NBA LOCKOUT thread
QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Jun 29, 2011 -> 12:24 PM) Yep, I've basically come to the realization that the season will not start on time. Best-case scenario would be for a repeat of '99 and getting 50 games in. But that's even doubtful. IF the league gets that many games in, it's because the union broke, and the proposal we just read probably will look like what we'll actually see.

Rios benched for Lilli
QUOTE (chw42 @ Jun 28, 2011 -> 11:19 PM) So Rios has one bad game and he gets benched? He has to be hurt. It would have been lack of hustle if it's a legit benching.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jun 28, 2011 -> 11:19 PM) Where is the additional debt here? What else would you call money given out early in exchange for an extremely long term contract. Might not be booked as debt but that's all it is. Fox is loaning on future tv revenues.

QUOTE (fathom @ Jun 28, 2011 -> 11:18 PM) Excellent all around game for Pierre. Time for Morel to hit a double into right center gap. No fathom, what you're supposed to do is point out that Floyd has the same number of doubles as morel. Even if it's not true it worked last time.

WTF are we waiting for ? Call up Viciedo !
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jun 28, 2011 -> 11:05 PM) He's getting $385 million upfront. $150 million would go to his divorce. The team gets an immediate $235 million shot in the arm. He'd be sitting pretty. McCourt is probably the only owner Bud wouldn't allow this. McCourt is most likely an ass, but Bud and his brothers approved him for membership. Now they should treat him like everyone else. I doubt they'd approve this sort of cash pullout and debt accumulation for any team. MLB has rules on debt accumulation and the dodgers blew through it.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jun 28, 2011 -> 10:53 PM) Its a $3 billion contract. Over like 20 years. That's how desperate he is for funds, he's willing to give up any tv revenue growth over 2 decades.
