  1. QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Jun 23, 2011 -> 10:36 AM) Perhaps this wouldn't be an issue if AJ had confidence that his manager would pull Peavy at the correct time and he didn't have to inform the manager of it? I think that this is just how AJ would react no matter what.
  2. Ah, this is why oil plummeted. Personally, I have no idea why you'd do this now and not 3-4 months ago when we first started bombing Libya.
  3. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jun 23, 2011 -> 09:58 AM) You won't see that reflected at the pumps for a while, but the prices should be falling anyways as prices have been on a pretty steady decline for the few weeks anyway. I saw $3.55 when I left this morning. If it was going up though, we'd see the increase reflected immediately, so I'll be content with the dropping.
  4. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jun 23, 2011 -> 09:56 AM) If they aren't funded, they aren't receiving money. I give up on this one.
  5. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jun 23, 2011 -> 09:55 AM) And for some happy news, Dollar is up big today, Crude is trading an 80 handle, and gas futures are down nearly 20 cents a gallon. Actually, for once that is good news, I'm planning a ****load of driving in 2 weeks.
  6. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jun 23, 2011 -> 09:46 AM) 401k's are actually money that has actually invested into something. You pay a portion, and your employer pays you a match. If you haven't funded a pension, the money isn't there. You can't invest money that isn't there. Its like a Social Security IOU sitting in a vault somewhere. Pension funds aren't investment funds that receive money and invest them? Huh? I pointed this out yesterday but I'll point it out again now. In the period 1970-2010, Pension funds averaged returns of about 8%. If you look at the period 2007-2010 alone, they returned about 0.5%. They're underfunded now because the economy and the markets have yet to recover to 2007 boom levels. That of course does not mean that there are other problems, but saying that they are underfunded now is exactly the same as saying that your 401k is underfunded now because it hasn't made up the dent from the 2008 implosion.
  7. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jun 23, 2011 -> 09:32 AM) Just depends, if they can get Bobby Valentine without giving up a significant player, they might just do that. Obviously, the big concern for the Marlins is selling season tickets in the offseason for the new stadium. Some of it also depends on how Guillen finishes this season, too...in terms of increasing his desirability (to both sides), an AL Central championship would burnish his resume and put him back into spotlight again. If Guillen wins the AL Central this year then he gets a contract extension here. And in that case, you're happy you added that 1 year extension...because otherwise Guillen would have a ton more negotiating leverage.
  8. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jun 23, 2011 -> 09:43 AM) Underfunded also means "not invested". If the stock market falls and wipes out 30% of the value of your 401K, is your 401K "not invested" in?
  9. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jun 23, 2011 -> 09:41 AM) That's got more to do with the free money sale at the fed than anything else. Remember pensions are massively underfunded right now. Which we already discussed the reasons for yesterday.
  10. QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Jun 23, 2011 -> 09:38 AM) Yeah i mean current state. 9-10% unemployment, around 1% growth, more and more people retiring. More pensions becoming due. It's not totally in the crapper where we can just forget about them completely, but at the same time nothing else good is happening so we just sorta stay in this meh period for a decade or two. Remember, pension funds are investment funds. While we're sitting around this 9% unemployment mark...wall street is doing spectacular.
  11. QUOTE (He_Gawn @ Jun 23, 2011 -> 07:54 AM) I started at ISU in Terre Haute, and am now at Purdue in West Lafayette. Nothing beats the Terre Haute smell. In the summer, you can't even go outside. West Lafayette is a hellhole though. Just keep telling myself one more year.... The ol' smell on I-90 when you cross into Indiana was always my favorite.
  12. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jun 23, 2011 -> 09:00 AM) I wonder if there is any chance the Bulls can package somehow and move up? There hasn't been any buzz from them. Everything that has leaked has said the Bulls will probably stand pat and try to save money/load up the back side of their roster.
  13. For the top guys there always seems to be teams out there that would surprise you. San Francisco could fit on that list. It'd be crazy with the deal they gave Beltre, but Texas's books look a lot better now.
  14. QUOTE (whitesoxbrian @ Jun 23, 2011 -> 12:46 AM) The end of the Cubs, IMO, was when Arizona raped them in the NLDS in (I think) 2007, and Ted Lilly fired his glove at the ground after a homer given up. The next year, James Loney and Manny continued the rape. All in all, Loney's grand slam and Lilly throwing his glove down was the beginning of the end for that group of losers. Castro's a keeper, and that's it. I have a feeling Barney will end up being like Theriot- fan favorite for a few years and playing elsewhere in 4 years. Campana has no offensive game besides his speed. LeMahieu is interesting, but he had like 700 PA's in the minors and only 4 HR's. Colvin hasn't looked the same since that bat practically killed him, and Cashner already has strung together some injuries. I don't follow their farm much- are Jackson and Vitters going to be good? Vitters is still young for his level but the .757 career minor league OPS is at least a concern.
  15. QUOTE (JoeCoolMan24 @ Jun 23, 2011 -> 04:41 AM) Does.Not.Compute. Wasn't Mike Lowell quite good on defense before the injuries piled up?
  16. QUOTE (ChiSox_Sonix @ Jun 23, 2011 -> 08:43 AM) Wow, this thread has been quite entertaining reading this morning. The jumping to conclusions, exaggerations and hyperbole, ridiculous statements, irrational opinions due to player bias, making a bigger deal out of nothing etc... This thread should be saved for whenever anyone asks what this site is like. Soxtalk in a nutshell right here. In all seriousness though, it really appears a non-issue. Both players said so afterwards and we won the game. There was no public blow-up or fight and it was just two competitive players in the heat of the moment. Peavy should not have been as animated while on the field and in view of everyone and AJ should never have made that gesture, right or wrong being irrelevant. I'll never question either player's desire to win and they're among the few on this team I can say that about. If anything, I'm kind of glad they do care as much as they do. Wouldn't the opposite be much, much worse? IMO...this is only a non-issue because the team won the game. If the game had been blown after Peavy left, then both of them would be a lot angrier at each other. And in that case...no, I don't think the opposite would be much worse.
  17. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jun 23, 2011 -> 07:06 AM) Giving Guillen a contract extension through 2012? You can't trade Gullen this offseason if you didn't have him under contract.
  18. QUOTE (chw42 @ Jun 22, 2011 -> 11:15 PM) Sergio impregnates the opposing team's hitters with his slider. unfair slider is unfair.
  19. QUOTE (lostfan @ Jun 22, 2011 -> 11:15 PM) Let's let that L flag get some fresh air There were a couple of them hanging over the Sox dugout in the 9th inning.
  20. QUOTE (kitekrazy @ Jun 23, 2011 -> 12:30 AM) How does a team surrender a triple to A.J. ? I Fukudome broke to the side before realizing it was over his head.
  21. I like the big L flags behind the Sox dugout
  22. Sit down Aramis. That was just mean
  23. QUOTE (whitesoxbrian @ Jun 22, 2011 -> 11:00 PM) So back to my original question, if the Sox are still going for it, would you like him as the lead-off hitter for the Sox? I'd guess that's a yes..? Problem is that he's had very inconsistent seasons including major, month long slumps that could kill an offense.
