QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Feb 15, 2011 -> 12:19 PM) I think that's the larger point. He's kinda worthless on the court. No, he does exactly what a modern justice is supposed to do. He writes legal decisions based on partisan politics. The oral arguments don't matter any more, it's the same game as House and Senate floor speeches. Sometimes he'll even surprise you with how he decides things based on his politics, but that is the modern interpretation of the Court. The fact that his wife is on the payroll of several Tea Party groups and the fact that he and Scalia give motivational talks or something like that to Congressional Republicans bothers me a lot more than him not talking and being a reliably partisan vote.

2010-2011 NBA Thread
QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Feb 15, 2011 -> 09:53 AM) Hmm, that doesn't make sense much at all... I thought the Nuggets wanted to clear room for Ty Lawson, not bring in another PG. Felton's on the hook for $7 million next year, Billups $13 million. Edit: By the way, that deal doesn't work; the salaries don't match up. The Nuggets would have to find about $5 million more to take back from the Knicks.

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Feb 15, 2011 -> 12:08 PM) I did. More amazing stupidity from the religious right crowd. I like to think it won't actually pass into law, and even if it does, I'm pretty darn sure it gets stayed in court immediately, and then stricken down. I think there's a more interesting legal question here. Obviously, a person who killed someone for political reasons would still be subject to federal murder and terrorism prosecution, but the question I have is...can a state legalize murder?

Albert Pujols' extension - Cards fail to extend by deadline
QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Feb 15, 2011 -> 12:04 PM) In the end, the Cardinals are going to work out a deal with a buy-out past Pujols' age 37 or 38 season. Albert won't play anywhere but St. Louis. I just don't know why Pujols would sign that.

Financial News
QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Feb 15, 2011 -> 11:06 AM) I don't really get what was so hard to understand. Hell, I know my deal pretty well, I pay it off every month as with the previous poster, and they've still found casual ways to ding me with fees. Currency conversion, or not cashing in points fast enough, or not buying enough from their approved list of merchants.

Albert Pujols' extension - Cards fail to extend by deadline
QUOTE (fathom @ Feb 15, 2011 -> 10:45 AM) They better hope that Vitters, Jackson, Cashner, and others pan out (and you know how often Cubs prospects pan out). If the Cards lose Pujols, they should take the money they had designated for him and go after Prince. Funny thing is that with all of this, the Reds have a chance to have the best team in that division if they can make some smart moves in the next few years. How is that an intelligent move?

Sox to go with four man rotation to start the season?
QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Feb 15, 2011 -> 09:37 AM) In the scenario where they are so bad early in the season that they're out of it by July, the only guys they'd likely trade are those with expiring contracts after 2011. This team is built with a 2-year window (maybe 3), so I don't think they'd have an outright firesale in 2011. With the amount of additional salary they've taken on this year, in the event of an April/May like last year, they will look at their books and realize their ticket sales have eroded, and they'll be in an even worse position for 2012. They'll start planning for significant salary cutbacks next year.

Sox to go with four man rotation to start the season?
QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Feb 15, 2011 -> 09:31 AM) He knew that's what I meant. After last year, I feel compelled to make sure people add that caveat when they say that a firesale could never happen this year.

I read about this first and figured "oh, that's just another attempt to make a statement by introducing a bill that will never actually come up for consideration anywhere. It's insane." Then I learned it had already passed a committee.

Albert Pujols' extension - Cards fail to extend by deadline
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Feb 15, 2011 -> 08:56 AM) Reading the story about how his draft negotiations went, the big contract he signed, and then hearing about these negotiations has put that feeling in my mind. Who knows if it is right or wrong, but that's the impression all of this has left me with. I guess it depends on how you define greedy. It's a guy who's been paid $120 million in his career, but he's put up production worth $300 million for his team. The reason why he hasn't been paid $300 million already is that there are rules in place to protect the teams, but that doesn't mean he has to like the rules. I mean, how would you feel if someone created rules that required you to, I dunno, subsidize your neighbors mortgage with your own income?

QUOTE (kapkomet @ Feb 14, 2011 -> 11:19 PM) That's full of s***. You cannot even compare the two like they are trying to, for many, many reasons. It's an apple to oranges comparison. However, I'm sure you know ALL about it, so I won't bother explaining it because no matter how or what I say (even when it's my job to know), you'll know better. Edit: you know what, I'm going to take a different track with this. Forget previous post, I'm just going to stop being the one feeding the troll.

Sox to go with four man rotation to start the season?
QUOTE (Ranger @ Feb 14, 2011 -> 07:47 PM) This really isn't going to be an issue. Any starter will tell you that you can pitch starter innings in the minors all you want, but nothing prepares you for throwing 160+ until you actually pitch in the Majors. It usually takes guys a year in the big leagues to get fully acclimated to it. Sale is on pace to get to around 170+ by the age of 24. That's a good enough pace. The up and down thing isn't going to hurt him in the slightest. The bottom line is: the Sox are better off this year having him pitch in the bullpen, so that's where he belongs. If he has to spend an extended amount of time as a starter this year, the Sox will not be as good as they would be if he were a reliever. He'll be fine. Unless, of course, he gets injured which is a possibility. Which is, um, kind of the sole reason to be concerned about his innings.

Albert Pujols' extension - Cards fail to extend by deadline
QUOTE (SoxFan562004 @ Feb 14, 2011 -> 05:59 PM) Thanks for posting the numbers, didn't know they expanded that much, yeah likely not suitors. Just trying to rack my brains for more teams because Pujols and his camp have to be hearing scuttle from other teams. I just think with the PED testing, his age and DH for end of a long term deal available in only 1 league I just don't see how he gets anywhere near what he wants. With that said, if he's not with the Cards, I would make the Angels front runners even with the Wells trade How much money would he cost himself if he got caught and suspended this year? $250 million?

MLB.COM'S top 50 prospects rankings
QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Feb 14, 2011 -> 06:19 PM) It's not that interesting to me. Most of the "prospects" we've "developed" were drafted by other organizations. Not saying there's anything wrong with that. That's the one thing we've been good at. Raiding other systems. But this still doesn't mask the fact that our drafting/developing has been putrid for the last decade. It's also worth noting that they give the total number of prospects each team has had appear on that list. The White Sox are tied for 12th, above average (the Braves of course run away with it). The Sox have had more than the average number of players appear on those lists and have had one of the highest success rates.

Technology catch-all thread
QUOTE (RockRaines @ Feb 14, 2011 -> 05:08 PM) Excellent point. Would Apple give a pass on that to mobileMe customers? I wonder how they would handle that. if the phone itself has like 2-4 gb of storage, you can make it work without an unlimited plan...you just swap out the material when you've got a wifi connection. Anything less than that though, and it really becomes impractical.

Technology catch-all thread
QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Feb 14, 2011 -> 05:05 PM) Well, I presume it would work on 4G/3G services. Which, as of now, no longer offer unlimited data plans, so if I wanted to make use of 4 gb of stored material on Apple's system, it'll cost a fortune.
