Technology catch-all thread
QUOTE (RockRaines @ Feb 14, 2011 -> 04:31 PM) I bet the music would be streaming and your contacts and calendar would be stored remotely for the most part like on exchange. Maybe all the apps would be ondemand? I've just got to wonder how effective that would be. I mean, I could probably live with a small amount of memory, compared to the current 16/32 versions, but having the phone turn useless every time I'm out of wifi area wouldn't seem very practical.

MLB.COM'S top 50 prospects rankings
QUOTE (maggsmaggs @ Feb 14, 2011 -> 04:30 PM) http://www.royalsreview.com/2011/2/14/1992...p-mlb-prospects Great study done by some random fan. One his conclusions: About 70% of Baseball America top 100 prospects fail. So there ya go, those lists are very poor indicators outside the the top 20. To say it another way...Fangraphs gives Sergio Santos 1 WAR already. That's more than ~40% of that list will produce. I also found it interesting that over the time period studied, the White Sox are #4 on the list of successful prospect percentage.

Technology catch-all thread
QUOTE (iamshack @ Feb 14, 2011 -> 03:52 PM) Yeah, I know I would end up either staying around or abandoning it. Although I don't really collect too much important data or anything...I would think the phone would at least be capable of storing your contacts list. Clearly you'd have to have some storage on the phone otherwise it wouldn't be worth getting. What's an iPhone good for if you can't download an app?

Which World Would You Want to Live In?
QUOTE (Y2HH @ Feb 14, 2011 -> 03:50 PM) Me. I've eaten rabbit, deer, squirrel and bear in the last year alone, and it's what, February? No wolves though, as I think you'll go to jail if you shoot one. I think they're on the protected list, or they were, they may not be now. They were taken off the protected list just over a year ago...and immediately, a hunter just outside of Yellowstone killed a tagged pack-leading animal and pretty disrupted half a decade of science. Another was killed using a banned poison.

2011 AL Central Catch-All Thread
Nothing fancy to start this thread out with. Since it's training camp time, here's the thread for the teams we play 19 times each season.

2010-2011 NBA Thread
QUOTE (PeavyTime @ Feb 14, 2011 -> 03:33 PM) Lakers realize how dumb the NBA season is. Just like the Celtics did last year, when they decided they could forego home court advantage in the playoffs.

Albert Pujols' extension - Cards fail to extend by deadline
QUOTE (SoxFan562004 @ Feb 14, 2011 -> 03:27 PM) I'll throw the Rangers in there, they were willing to go pretty high with Lee and the new ownership might determine it's the best business move, also can play him at 1b for a few and have luxury of DH. If they hadn't spent all that money on Beltre I might believe that. But even after a WS run, they're not a hugely profitable team, and at the end of this season, they're going to be having to seriously figure out what they're doing with a number of guys. B-R does a little thing where they automatically guess a general range for how much a team's arbitration guys and options make...they go from a $95 million payroll this year to close to $120-$130 million next year just by guys hitting arbitration and guys whose contracts expand (Hamilton's does this by $6 mil, for example).

May as well start this mess with some actual news. Other Mods...feel free to debase the title/description in whatever ways you see fit. Link. It appears this contract buys out 1 year of Free Agency for Marmol.

MLB.COM'S top 50 prospects rankings
QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Feb 14, 2011 -> 02:54 PM) That's definitely all we deserve. At least he's a blue chipper though(gotta look for a positive somewhere). If you want to look for a different type of Positive...Morel isn't on any of those lists, and he's got a good shot at, in the long term, out-producing most of the guys on that list. Yeah, some of them will be stars, but even in the top 10 there's a 40-50% bust rate.

The Democrat Thread
I'm not going to get through the full thing today, but here's a "small-book sized" version of 10 essays on the Pentagon budget. Good timing since the President's budget is out today.

Catch All Anything Thread
QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Feb 14, 2011 -> 02:39 PM) I'm strictly talking about his music. I eat, sleep and breathe hip hop and never liked his music. He's like the white version of Jay Z. I guess the question is...is there any value to "art" that is designed for mass-consumption?

Catch All Anything Thread
QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Feb 14, 2011 -> 02:31 PM) No idea. I never figured out the obsession with him. There's always a role for a person whose persona is to push the limits of what people/parents would define as acceptable. The thing I do admire about him is...he actually realizes that's his role. Lines in his songs about how he's doing "Black music" and using it to make himself money, expressing some of the deeper truth. Also, I like the fact that he realized he was getting over-exposed and essentially disappeared for about 3 years, which really is a sound music-business move.

2010-11 MLB Offseason Catch-All
QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Feb 14, 2011 -> 02:06 PM) I think that's the old "I'm not going to say he's fat directly, but I will indirectly call him a huge tubbo, so in essence, I am calling him fat, but just in a more polite manner." Um, I'm not sure there's anything polite about that. That's calling him fat and making a joke at his expense.

Sox have been trying to extend Danks for 2.5 years
QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Feb 14, 2011 -> 01:50 PM) From everything I understand, Montero's glove really doesn't translate that well to catcher, but his bat will translate anywhere, so if they can get Montero - they HAVE to get Montero if they were to trade Liriano to New York - I think they'll be OK. So where would his glove translate? They're full at 1b as well. They might have a corner OF in a year or two if they let Cuddyer and Kubel hit FA, Cuddyer's contract is up at the end of this year.

Sox have been trying to extend Danks for 2.5 years
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Feb 14, 2011 -> 01:07 PM) Liriano is the perfect marriage really. Twins need to maximize Liriano's worth if they aren't extending him, and the Yankees have to have another name starter. I could see the Twins raping the Yankees farm system very soon. Problem is...isn't the top of the Yankees farm system at the Catching position? Edit: here's a version of a Yankees prospects list where 3 of their top 4 are catchers.

2010-11 MLB Offseason Catch-All
Probably just motivation, but here's Brian Cashman saying that Joba Chamberlain is no lock for the major league roster since he has minor league options left.

Sox have been trying to extend Danks for 2.5 years
There are about 5 different threads I could post this quote in, but I'll start here. This comes from Verducci's paean to the big 3 teams in the Northeast.
