Bobby Jenks to the Red Sox

Red Sox To Sign Bobby Jenks

By Ben Nicholson-Smith [December 16 at 1:47pm CST]

The Red Sox have agreed to a two-year, $12MM deal with Bobby Jenks, according to ESPN.com's Buster Olney (on Twitter). Jon Heyman of SI.com first reported (on Twitter) that the sides were closing in on a deal.

The White Sox non-tendered the reliever earlier in the month after a season in which Jenks posted a career-high 4.44 ERA with otherwise strong numbers. His 58.3% ground ball rate placed him tenth among relievers with at least 50 innings of work and he posted 10.4 K/9 with 3.1 BB/9 in 52 2/3 innings. He picked up 27 saves, his lowest total since becoming the team's full-time closer in 2006.

Heyman reported earlier this afternoon that the Red Sox are open to trading Jonathan Papelbon, though his trade value is low, since he's likely to earn $11MM or so through arbitration (Twitter link).

Good luck Bobby, I hope you enjoy the set up role.

P.S. For your sake I hope that roll comes with butter!

If the White Sox had signed him they wouldnt have mentioned any of those positive stats.

Will he take his gas can with him?

Bobby's going to get eaten alive in Boston if he pitches like he did last season.

ESPN will destroy him too.

Especially with the Green Monster in LF. This is still a good spot for him though, he has a great shot of winning a title.

He needed to go somewhere with less pressure, not exponentially MORE....

hahaha have fun with him boston....they are crazy if they trade papelbon and use jenks as their closer

If Papelbon goes, Bard's the closer. Jenks will likely settle into the 8th inning in Boston when all is said and done.

I'm not gonna hate on Bobby. He had some flame outs this past year or two but has been a pretty solid member of the bullpen and team. I'll always have a soft spot for him. Good luck Bobby...

Good for you, Bobby...you'll fit in well with the City of Boston. Just stay out of trouble.

Thanks for everything you did in a White Sox uniform.

$6 mil a year is a lot for Bobby. I wish him the best of luck against anyone but us.

Thanks for everything Bobby! You helped give me the greatest year of my life!

Good luck to Bobby in his new Sox. He's going to be under a lot of pressure in Boston. I hope for his sake he pitches better than he did this past year.

I believe the last time an Ex- White Sox closer went there, they did win the World Series for the first time in 80 some years.

Good Luck Bobby (except against us)!!!!

My fan side: "Jermaine O'Neal II." My saber side: "Good gamble! Very unlucky in 2010!" RT @Buster_ESPN Red Sox: 2 yrs $12m for Bobby Jenks.

LoL I like Simmons but he is a homer when it comes to NE teams.

Please refresh my memory?

And I do wish Bobby well when it doesn't have an effect on our Sox. Thanks for the great memories! Ozzie's call for him in the Series will live forever!

Pap's ain't goin' anywhere unless they're prepared to eat some salary. He's looking at, what, $11-12 million after arbitration?

Ah. Thank you.

I don't see this going well for Jenks. The media will tear him apart if he's anything but very good. The fans and writers will rip him relentlessly for his weight and work ethic.

If you're one of those people who thought we treated him unfairly in Chicago, get ready for something special.

His time with the Sox worked out great for both parties. Good luck big boy!

Someone send Greg a link to the Bosox equivalent to Soxtalk. He'll go insane when he reads everyone trashing Jenks after a blown save.
