QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Feb 8, 2011 -> 11:52 AM) I thought he was crushed by everyone at Fox and was still behind people at CNN? Everyone, and I mean everyone, is crushing CNN. He was still significantly behind people at Fox, by a factor of 2 or so (2 million to 1 million). However, his ad rates were much, much higher than the people at Fox, because the average viewer age for O'Reilly's show, for example, is about 71. And because no one other than Goldline is going to risk their brand name being associated with Glenn Beck when he says something that actually gets someone killed.

Harry Caray statue at Wrigley defaced
QUOTE (since56 @ Feb 8, 2011 -> 09:46 AM) After the free wheeling days of Veeck The new owners wanted a tamer Carey. While negotiations were going on the Cubs ( not known for the freedom they give their broadcasters ) made him an offer he jumped on. He knew the feelings in the city about the rivalry but also knew due to super station status of WGN he could get more exposure , and go back to his National League roots ( St. Louis ). He went from face of the White Sox to number one Cubbie. He is no hero to me. I don't know that I thought he was a hero...the question is, should we regard him as a villain?

Harry Caray statue at Wrigley defaced
QUOTE (since56 @ Feb 8, 2011 -> 09:14 AM) There was never a more entertaining broadcast team than Harry and Jimmy piersall. However Harry defected and worse he commited treason when he went to the northside. He turned into a buffoon as the years went by and the assosciation is overwhelmingly Cubs. As for the statue? The Cubs deface the whole city just by their existence so paint away boys. They deserve no respect especially the traitor Carey. The phrase "Harry Defected" implies that Harry Carey made the decision to leave for the north side despite the Sox wanting him back. Correct me if I'm wrong but I was under the impression that, much like John Rooney, the Sox actually let him walk.

I'm still not sold either way on the charter school issue...but this data is pretty grim. The problem with the interpretation of course is that there is likely a bias where charter schools have been established in areas with already-failing schools, so you can't draw the conclusion that "Charter schools obviously perform worse". However, if you're asking whether charter schools are a panacea to cure all educational ills, I think you have an easy answer right there.

2010-11 MLB Offseason Catch-All
QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Feb 8, 2011 -> 12:13 AM) Drew only missed about 20 games and Beckett missed about 12 starts (but that was probably for the better considering how poorly he pitched last year). Cameron did miss a good chunk of the season though. The bigger losses were Ellsbury (about 140 games), Pedroia (about 80 games), and Youkilis (about 50 games). Those were far more significant, and using simple WAR, probably cost the Red Sox a total of about 4-7 WAR. When you have guys who have already been proven to be injury prone, you can't complain if they happen to go down at the same time other guys go down. Yeah, Drew stayed healthy for a season, but that's a rare occurrence. Beckett didn't stay healthy, Cameron didn't stay healthy. If they'd instead had stronger rotations and a more-likely-to-stay healthy CF, then they might well have been able to fight through some of their bigger losses.

So, this discussion begs the question...if there is no Derrick Rose in this year's draft, is there a Bargani/Aldridge?

Undocumented worker who became quadriplegic is moved to Mexico against
QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Feb 7, 2011 -> 05:02 PM) Why would there be no case? I think you are missing my point here. I feel the laws should be written on this to turn pretty much all these costs around on the employer. I fail to see what his status in Mexico would have to do with that. Without the worker to testify that he was on the job at the time the injury occurred, there's no case, that seems plain to me.

Undocumented worker who became quadriplegic is moved to Mexico against
QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Feb 7, 2011 -> 04:54 PM) If so, I'd suggest the hospital sue the company that had hired him. If you set up the laws such that people who employ illegals end up on the hook for their workplace costs in any form, that should help deter future employment of this type. Then who pays to keep him in this country and alive if the case takes years to wind its way through courts/appeals?

2010-2011 NBA Thread
QUOTE (Brian @ Feb 7, 2011 -> 04:31 PM) Awful year to be the worst team in NBA history. Assuming CLE wins the lottery and gets the #1 pick, there is really no for sure college kid you take at #1. There is good talent in college but nobody I think could be a superstar at the next level or build a franchise around. 2006 draft comparable?
