  1. QUOTE (bmags @ Feb 7, 2011 -> 03:50 PM) I think it's a risk you take for AOL's vision. I think it's funny that one of the reasons people pointed to for the collapse of the news business was massive consolidation of ownership to a few huge companies, and before the online news business is even really getting going the same thing is happening. I think there's also this belief permeating the internet that one big reason why the quality and depth of reporting has declined is duplication of services. You really only need 1-2 reporter making $2 million a year to sit in the room, ask Gibbs creative questions, and transcribe his answers, but instead you get the 20-30 person game every day. If a major news story happens, suddenly 6 major networks are all shipping large staffs and their entire workforce overseas, or to that convention/speech.
  2. Email I just received from the Sox. If anyone wants the actual promotional code, feel free to PM me.
  3. QUOTE (zenryan @ Feb 6, 2011 -> 10:35 PM) I agree. Going to be hard to stop them in the near future. The Packers actually have 1 thing that puts them at a lot of risk. Here is, according to ESPN, the values under contract for 2011 for various teams. As noted from where I stole this data, the cap in 2009 was at $130 million. If the owners succeed in forcing cap reductions on the Union, the Packers could be in a position where they have no choice but to make cuts, just in order to sign this year's draft class. Even beyond that, they're not in a position to be able to make long-term commitments right now, to add to that team or to extend guys they need to keep.

QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Feb 7, 2011 -> 02:50 PM) 25. I meant that I'm strange in comparison to other people because everyone seems to "need" that extra boost. I didn't really start getting used to it/needing it all that often until I got to grad school. I'd drink coffee when I had homework to do or a late night exam to study for, but it wasn't until I was 23-24 that I started having a cup in the morning, and 27 when I started adding a cup or two of tea to the ritual during the day.
  5. QUOTE (lostfan @ Feb 7, 2011 -> 02:47 PM) I kind of felt like I was raping myself. Abused and violated. I think the medical community has some kind of ethical obligation to treat people in those kinds of situations don't they? Pretty sure in places like Texas and California this happens all the time. At least in California, a lot of places like hospitals (and the police) are forbidden to inquire about immigration status, because otherwise, immigrants who actually need to go to the hospital or to the police just avoid them.
  6. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Feb 7, 2011 -> 02:29 PM) I guess I meant in-game statistical records. Really, probably a few but this wasn't a high scoring game, high powered game, average number of turnovers, average numbers of yards on both sides, no one really stood out as having dominated the game, people just made plays when they had to.
  7. Just out of curiosity...did he fall and become injured while on the job?

QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Feb 7, 2011 -> 02:35 PM) I'm strange (although it should be the exact opposite) because I don't need any artificial things to give me energy. The only reason I eat or drink anything is because I like the taste. I can wake up and get right to business. How old are you?

QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Feb 7, 2011 -> 02:24 PM) Whoa. Amazingly, that's probably as much caffeine as 2-3 cups of coffee or pop.
  10. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Feb 7, 2011 -> 01:55 PM) I kind of think they filled most of their needs pretty well. You can't really predict losing half of your starting lineup to injury. You can when it includes guys like JD Drew, Josh Beckett, Mike Cameron.
  11. Although the related search for Zena Foster Matt Kemp is a bit troublesome.
  12. QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Feb 7, 2011 -> 12:05 PM) Mapquest I don't use, but it's like a yahoo/google thing. People have their preference and they stick with it. Apparently, internet people in the know have been somewhat abuzz over Mapquest's Open Street Map, wikipedia style map system.
  13. QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Feb 7, 2011 -> 12:06 PM) A Michael Young acquisition sounds quite all-in to me! Serious question...where would he play? 3b? His weak defense there is why the Rangers replaced him. He's been worth a couple wins with the bat in the fangraphs world...but the fact that the Rangers spent stupid-level money to replace him tells me a lot.
  14. Anyone who wants to complain about a major executive branch f***-up, here you go.
  15. QUOTE (maggsmaggs @ Feb 7, 2011 -> 11:06 AM) That signing was questionable from the beginning because of how similar he is to Forte. We don't need a poor man's clone, we need a speed back. I think it didn't work more because of Chester Taylor than because of scheme/running back type.
  16. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Feb 7, 2011 -> 12:54 AM) And spent $80+ million on Lackey too. They made a few moves last year. Hopefully you get the comparison though...both teams had some big needs and some small needs...they went after some undervalued/aged players to try to fill their small needs, but in the process wound up not filling their bigger needs.
  17. QUOTE (greg775 @ Feb 6, 2011 -> 10:55 PM) You are not all-in when you have a lot of question marks. Then no team is all in.
  18. You'd almost think that the thread was populated by a group of young/middle aged males.
  19. QUOTE (Y2HH @ Feb 7, 2011 -> 11:09 AM) It's not impossible. It's just impossible when you consider the source attempting to do it, which completely politicizes the entire process. And therein lies the problem: Politicians talk a big game about making "tough choices", but none of them ever actually make these "tough choices", because it would mean a one-and-done term for them, and possibly end their "career". The taxpayers don't want the tough decisions either, and they'd kick anyone out of office that makes them. Being a politician has become a career, which is the source of the entire problem...if you finally got elected to a power position after years of glad handing, favors, etc., making the changes necessary to overhaul this system would get you removed from office, and possibly end your "career" with it, something no politician will ever do. So, it's impossible.
  20. Doesn't relate to other people but still annoys me: The fact that good technique usually hurts so much more than bad technique.
  21. QUOTE (ScottyDo @ Feb 7, 2011 -> 09:20 AM) i would think eduardo escobar could be good trade bait Give him a little time, if he can replicate his AFL bat showing to start off the year in the minors, he will become solid trade bait.
  22. Figured this was interesting enough that it deserved a thread, since I have no idea where it'll end up. Last time AOL bought a major media company, it cost >100x more, and totally flopped. In this case, they're buying an honest to goodness innovator, and trying to salvage themselves.
  23. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Feb 7, 2011 -> 12:40 AM) Everything considered, is there a better QB in the league right now than Aaron Rodgers? Say what you will about the talent around him, because there's a ton of it, but he can absolutely sling it with the best of them. The only Tedford QB to actually be a good QB at the next level. Which tells you a lot about the nature vs. nurture QB discussion.
  24. QUOTE (JPN366 @ Feb 7, 2011 -> 12:15 AM) The most overrated player in the NFL. Apparently free from criticism as well. Aikman actually complimented him when he bit on the fake before Jennings caught his second TD. I say next Super Bowl, you get Pink Floyd in some incarnation, and all they need to play is one song...all 25 minutes of "Echoes." I certainly wouldn't call him overrated...when he's 100% he's as deadly as any defensive player in the game...but yes, he was definitely invisible this game. I'd imagine he's still not 100% from his injuries this season. And yes, the DPOY in his hands is still a mistake. Edit; here's an ESPN piece pointing out how useless he was.
