QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Dec 1, 2010 -> 01:34 PM) /season I tried to look back to the point where we had out last "Will the Lakers hit 72?" discussion, but couldn't find it. Man, we get a lot of posts in this thread.

Alexei opts out of 1.5 mil- Sox have a week to accept 2.5 op
QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Dec 1, 2010 -> 01:25 PM) Given Uribe is making 7 mill per over 3, I don't see how they work out an extension right now. Take the 2.5. Alexei has a large motivation here to get a 3-4 year extension done; he guarantees himself a salary if he gets hurt. From this point on...he plays for 1 year contracts for the next 3 years until he hits FA if he doesn't sign something. That's a pretty risky position for a 29 year old player to be in, esp. since he's only earned about $7 million or so on this first contract.

We never banned those? Or wait, did we ban those and then just dismantle the ban in the last decade?

It's worth noting in terms of an extension that after this year, Alexei still has 2 more arbitration eligible years. The first he'd probably come in at about $5 million-ish, the second, probably closer to $8, give or take a couple on each side. That's roughly a $15 million-ish commitment for the next 3 years if they just go through arbitration. If the Sox went to him and offered something on the order of 4/$22-$25, I think they might be in the right range to buy out his first year of FA.

Financial News
QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Dec 1, 2010 -> 08:11 AM) Interesting, the reports earlier this week of brick-and-mortar stores showed flat sales. So the increase must have been big in cyberspace. Having an overall 6.4% increase is far bigger than the 0-2% bump I had seen quoted as likely. Nice to see. I believe the store sales numbers were for last friday alone, while this number is for the full thanksgiving period (i.e. including Thursday and the weekend as well).

The Democrat Thread
QUOTE (mr_genius @ Nov 30, 2010 -> 10:51 PM) Those cuts and an unemployment extension would add to the deficit. But I think the 'tea party' rage is being occupied by the failed vote to ban earmarks for a few years. So you guys will need to fill the void. A 6 month unemployment extension would add, IIRC, something like $20 billion to the deficit, if you neglect the multiplier factors. That is approximately 1/200th the cost of a full 10 year extension of the Bush tax cuts.

The Democrat Thread
QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Dec 1, 2010 -> 08:16 AM) I think Obama is right to draw the line around 250k, but I also think it would be good in this environment for him to sit down with the GOP and compromise on a higher number, maybe 500k. Ideally, Congress puts forth two seperate bills - one for under 250k extension, the other a debate about the area above that. What will probably happen is a temporary extension for all. There is talk that the Democrats are likely to put forwards a bill to vote on in the House splitting off the $1 million earners and above as the old tax bracket. The bill will then fail, and the Democrats will cave on the whole thing. Worth noting...the 10 year cost of keeping the tax breaks on everything earned below $250k is about $3.2 trillion. The $1 million plan = $3.6 trillion. The whole box = $4 trillion.

Konerko and Putz both decline Arb
QUOTE (iamshack @ Nov 30, 2010 -> 10:10 PM) I'm not sure it's an issue of market value as much as it is him wanting to explore his options elsewhere. From that cryptic announcement he made (or whatever that was), it sure seemed like he is interested in playing somewhere else, and not all that concerned about the money. Which is what they all say until someone offers them another $2 million.

An Open Letter
QUOTE (bigruss22 @ Nov 30, 2010 -> 09:49 PM) Dear drunken student, It's only 6pm and you're drunk out of your mind at a restaurant, you look like your 16, and you just threw up for 10 minutes in front of me at the restaurant. You also were in the bathroom for the next 2 hours. Please learn some respect and not go to a public place of eating just to throw up, and maybe learn not to get blacked out drunk before 6pm on a Tuesday. Sincerely, Hungry turned sickened student Sudden memory of one of my friends...
