QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Oct 25, 2010 -> 08:29 AM) I have to LOL at the idea that financial engineers are somehow "less productive" than any other engineers. Not sure if the author noticed, but it's not 1970 anymore. I can't think of any electrical engineers who have nearly destroyed the world economy.

John Danks trade ideas
QUOTE (rockren @ Oct 25, 2010 -> 12:35 AM) They'll never offer a ton of prospects in a trade when they just plan on signing Cliff Lee. IF (big if considering I'd give the Yanks a 99% chance to sign Lee) then maybe. But don't forget the Johan sweeps years ago considering they were unwilling to come anywhere near blowing the Twins away for him. IF (another big if) KW were even considering moving MB this off-season...my guess is he would have to be "bowled over" (a term I've heard KW use several times in the past). If the Yankees trade for a starter...they've been linked occasionally to Greinke as well. Yeah there's the whole psychological thing, but the Yankees have his brother in their org as well.

2010 NLCS: Giants vs. Phillies
QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Oct 25, 2010 -> 12:41 PM) Who said it would be garbage? The ratings will be bad and that's just stating a fact. And like I said above...no one should care.

Official 2010-11 NFL Thread
You know, I don't think it's because of the weakness on the Bears/Bills, but I really don't feel like I'm enjoying this year's NFL as much as last year. I definitely am always a fan of getting new blood at the top of the league, but compared to last year where we had teams like the Saints and Colts on ridiculous rolls, we really haven't seen that much "Spectacular" football. There are some good to very good teams, and teams that have had very good days, but I don't think I've seen anything near as masterful as that Saints dismantling of the Patriots last year. I kinda feel like I'm wishing for an exemplary team and I'm not seeing them.

2010 NLCS: Giants vs. Phillies
QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Oct 24, 2010 -> 04:38 PM) I don't have the exact numbers, but last Monday showed what matters ratings-wise. The ALCS game between the Rangers & Yankees got around a 6.5 rating, while the Jaguars/Titans football game got a 7.2. If a game with the Yankees & a Dallas team, can't beat the Nashville/Jacksonville markets, you know that baseball is not gonna get the ratings anyway. Like I said above, baseball ratings really are meaningless.

QUOTE (DrunkBomber @ Oct 24, 2010 -> 04:55 PM) Id like to think this will be Lovies farewell tour but who knows what theyll do with 1 year left on his deal. At least Martz was only signed for 1, I believe. They'll probably be a lot more willing to make a move this offseason if there is an appearance that there will be a next year. The reason he wasn't gone this year is they didn't want to hire a new coach this year and then pay 2 coaches to do zero coaching during a lockout season.

QUOTE (lostfan @ Oct 24, 2010 -> 04:54 PM) Can we fire all the coaches and give them advance prep time to scout draft picks and free agents? What free agents? The NFL won't have free agency until a CBA is signed.

Trade Candidates for Kenny this offseason
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Oct 24, 2010 -> 04:33 PM) He drove in a heck of a lot of runs the first half, in fact, his OPS was well over 1.000 with RISP throughout the first half. Try to hide Dunn at 1B and watch Ramirez get 35 errors. Dunn is horrid in the field. As I have stated previously, I believe Dunn is probably a better bet than Quentin, but to say Quentin has no value like the post claimed in my response is silly. Dunn is horrid when you put him in LF. He's at 1b. Hell, just look at the raw numbers. Quentin was worse in the OF last year than Bobby Abreu. He was almost as bad as Vlad Guerrero, and Vlad barely played there. Quentin didn't play a full season there and led the AL in Errors as a RF. Carlos Quentin in RF last year put up numbers disturbingly similar to the numbers Adam Dunn used to put up when he was in the OF. Nearly 10 errors, .960-ish fielding percentage, terrible range numbers, near the bottom of the league. The only thing that kept Quentin from 10-12 errors last year was the fact that he always gets hurt. Carlos Quentin in 2010 in RF = Adam Dunn in LF. Hell, if you want to go to the advanced statistics, Quentin was worse in RF last year than Adam Dunn ever was in the OF.

QUOTE (fathom @ Oct 24, 2010 -> 03:30 PM) Can we also now state how f***ing idiotic it was to do a QB sneak with Cutler during the 3rd quarter on 1st and inches? Coming off of the concussion a few weeks back, at least give Taylor a try for a TD. I don't get the Bears game, but really, no. If Cutler hasn't recovered from the concussion he shouldn't be out there. If you only need a couple inches and you have 4 downs, a sneak makes very good sense on the first play, since the odds are it'll be nearly impossible for it to lose yardage, and you're not going to get fumbles very often since there's not even a handoff. If you're a yard or two away, then you go to the RB because you can't get that on a sneak.

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Oct 24, 2010 -> 03:08 PM) I think you have to atleast offer arbitration to Quentin unless they believe he can be non-tendered and resigned to a cheaper deal, similar to what the A's did with Cust. $5 million for a potential 3-4 WAR player is pretty damn good value. If he does the same thing again next year, you cut the string and let him go for good. THis year, Quentin will still likely earn his money even if he's just at DH. Next year...we need a step up.

2010 NLCS: Giants vs. Phillies
QUOTE (chw42 @ Oct 24, 2010 -> 03:04 PM) They had them this year and look what happened... Their offense sucked this postseason and it's not going to get much better since they have some aging players and Werth will probably be gone. OTOH...they have Dominic Brown ready to step in for Werth, and that's going to at least add another dimension to their offense. Utley had an un-utleyian season, Howard had a down season, and Rollins was hurt most of the year. There's plenty of room for bounce-back on those guys, Howard, Utley, and Rollins are 30 and 31, not in their late 30's.

2010 NLCS: Giants vs. Phillies
QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Oct 24, 2010 -> 02:40 PM) To be fair, the Phillies offense is a little better than the Braves too. The Reds' offense is a little bet better than the Giants' too, but we saw a legendary performance against Cinci.

QUOTE (lostfan @ Oct 24, 2010 -> 02:25 PM) It takes longer to move down the field, but it's better than getting dropped for -10 If you can move down the field like that, eventually the defense has to break off the heavy pass rush and the down-the-field throws open up more.

QUOTE (DBAHO @ Oct 24, 2010 -> 07:06 AM) The Hornets got Jerryd Bayless for a conditional 1st rounder. Very underrated move for them. Monty Williams obviously know Bayless from his time in Portland and he's a direct replacement for Collison. For the price, the Hornets definitely win that trade, although it's a cost cutting move for Portland it appears. Also gives NO more options if CP3 gets traded I guess. That also clears some additional backcourt minutes for Rudy!

Trade Candidates for Kenny this offseason
QUOTE (joeynach @ Oct 24, 2010 -> 02:02 PM) So put him at DH. Last year, he'd have been worth about 1 WAR at DH. He'd have been an upgrade for the Sox at DH...but that's because we made a ridiculous decision on DH. Let me put one other thing into the discussion....this is Carlos's first arbitration year. His salary is going to go from the minimum to about $5 million. That's less of a bargain this year. If he put up another .800-ish OPS next year from the DH spot, he'd be looking at another boost, maybe to the $10 million range. And frankly, I'd consider him a non-tender candidate at that point.

2010 NLCS: Giants vs. Phillies
QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Oct 24, 2010 -> 01:54 PM) I really dig this World Series matchup. It's nice to have someone other then then Phillies and the Yankees dueling it out for anothe year. I can at least find something to root for in the San Francisco-Texas Matchup. Also, anyone who says they're not excited to see Tim Lincecum face Josh Hamiltion is either lying or is impossible to please. I'm not sure that Lincecum is exciting me right now. He didnt' get lit up by the Phillies, but we didn't see the sort of 14 strikeout, legendary stuff performance against the Phils that we saw against the Braves.

2010 NLCS: Giants vs. Phillies
QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Oct 24, 2010 -> 12:12 PM) I could care less about the ratings. Im watching, it is a team that hasnt been there since 02 vs a team that has never been there I said this in another thread and I'll repeat it here. No one should give a flying f*** about world series postseason ratings. Not baseball fans, not even Fox employees. Basketball and the NFL get much larger slices of their revenue from national TV deals. They have fewer games and in the case of the NBA smaller arenas. Baseball makes its money on local broadcasts and ticket sales over a 162 game season. It's nice to have the Yankees or Red Sox make the W.S. every now and then to keep their revenues up for revenue sharing purposes, but every time you get a team to the series that hasn't been there in a while, it's a revenue boost. Texas next year is going to be in vastly better shape. They'll have sold their season ticket packages already, they'll have all sorts of revenue methods by putting their name out locally more, and their bounce from this will last for years. Baseball is much, much better with "low rated" world series than they would be with a high rated one every year, because if the Yankees win the AL 5-6 years in a row right now, all the other teams will start languishing.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Oct 24, 2010 -> 12:33 PM) Adam Dunn 648 plate appearances 38 homers 103 RBI .260 BA .356 OBP .892 OPS--worth $11 million to $15 million a year Carlos Quentin 527 plate appearances 26 homers 87 RBI .243 BA .342 OBP .821 OPS----worthless? I don't think so. Quentin is another guy Sox fans will realize is better than they think if he goes away. Wins above replacement player from Fangraphs: Carlos Quentin: 0. Adam Dunn: 3.9. Carlos picked up a ton of home runs, but didn't do anything else effectively, he only got 527 PA's because of all the injury time, and he was a much larger liability in the field than Dunn because you can hide defense at 1b and not have it hurt you as much.
