  1. QUOTE (VAfan @ Jul 14, 2010 -> 05:29 PM) 3) What's the point of insurance if it doesn't pay in the year the player goes down? In other words, how many injuries span multiple years? I would venture to guess it is very few. I'm sure you could get an insurance company to start insuring contracts where a guy misses half the season. But as I'm sure you can figure...that happens a lot more often than a guy missing an entire season...and so the insurance cost would be much, much higher. On this team? A bat, no question.
  2. QUOTE (Jerksticks @ Jul 14, 2010 -> 05:29 PM) So if Gonzalez produces in 2011 like he has in 2010, what type of FA does he become, type A? If that's the case then he would more than likely decline the 2.5 million dollar arbitration offer and try to cash in... and the Braves win even more. Is this accurate? At this rate, he's on pace for about 30 HR and has a .793 OPS (99 OPS+, Toronto not being a hitter's park), and his average season HR number is 16. His career high in HR is 23, so the odds of him suddenly developing 30 HR power right now are limited, at age 33. That said, he keeps this pace up for 2 years and the Braves will not only have a steal but there's a good chance he'd be a type A guy. If not, type B for sure.
  3. QUOTE (chw42 @ Jul 14, 2010 -> 04:26 PM) I don't think it's nibbling. These hitters usually can't catch up to the fastball. He gets ahead by these guys either taking or fouling his fastball off. But then, he can't finish these guys off since his location isn't as good and they just keep fouling his pitches off by extending the at bat. For a guy who throws nothing but fastballs, that's not a good thing. The more they see of his fastball, the easier it is for them to pick one and hit it. It's not just picking one up, it's getting one in the location they're looking for. That's what happened with McCann last night.
  4. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jul 14, 2010 -> 04:12 PM) The ones that interest me the most now, are those strike zone plot graphs. He's maybe more up, but really, he's just more off. Kind of goes to what I said earlier, when he gets ahead in the count and tries for a pitch for them to go fishing, he misses by a lot more. That to me, is more likely mental than physical. He was definitely more "up" last night.
  5. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Jul 14, 2010 -> 03:58 PM) When did Luther sign with Charlotte? I remember him signing a 2-year deal with New Orleans, and it just came out today that he failed his physical with them and won't be signing with the Hornets anymore. I dunno, I just checked their depth chart and he was listed there.
  6. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 14, 2010 -> 03:37 PM) http://www.thebaseballcube.com/players/M/Jack-McDowell.shtml http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/m/millean01.shtml
  7. Really, it boggles my mind that you think humans are capable of the effort you're requiring of them, and that you think people who don't do what you're demanding of them are lazy.
  8. QUOTE (Jerksticks @ Jul 14, 2010 -> 03:03 PM) I don't worry about him switching from starting to relieving for the rest of the season, but I do worry what happens if he is lights out up here in the bullpen. Do we really send him back down to the mid minors to work his way up for a few years, mastering a third pitch? What if he plays a big role outa the bullpen down the stretch; do we just send him down and go with Threets next year? The only way I'd even consider keeping him in the bullpen long term is if over the offseason, D1 signed a contract extension.
  9. QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Jul 14, 2010 -> 02:55 PM) Christian groups and churches often offer their services. PRIVATE groups do as well. It doesn't have to be government groups. So basically, your argument is that everyone should go to a religious school so that the government doesn't have to help. Seriously...everything in terms of college aid in this country runs through the government. Even the private donations. And private contributions absolutely pale in terms of amount. And frankly...it should; the government has motivation to help people get through college to help improve society. Private groups don't, beyond the simple charity level.
  10. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jul 14, 2010 -> 02:48 PM) Hell, for that matter, what is the accuracy of the Pitch F/X for this anyway? It might be an inch itself, in which case this means nothing. Well, the issue here is that there would have to have been a systematic change in PF/X between the 2 populations with the change correlating approximately with the time that Thornton's injury cropped up and his performance suffered, which I think is less likely.
  11. But don't you dare think you need a computer or a cell phone to get through school. And cook those kids dinner! And I have to ask... Did you really just write that? Who do you think puts those programs together? Jesus?
  12. QUOTE (GoodAsGould @ Jul 14, 2010 -> 02:45 PM) Lame, id of been down for that deal, I hate the Bulls and I hate the Heat. The Charlotte PG right now are DJ Augustin and Luther Head, as far as I can tell. Not only would they probably be willing to bid up from there...but if Livingston thinks he still has anything left, he's nearly guaranteed a ton more playing time in Charlotte.
  13. QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ Jul 14, 2010 -> 02:45 PM) Correct me if I am wrong, but it's a tax imposed after assets are transfered after ones death. Correct? I know "Death Tax" is a bit extreme, but it does describe it pretty well IMO. It is a tax on the handing down of high value estates to one's heirs. So yes, it happens after death. Calling it a "Death tax" is just as loaded as calling someone "anti-choice" or "Pro-abortion".
  14. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jul 14, 2010 -> 02:41 PM) What you are saying about his health and age is possible, but I think unlikely. I don't see a statistically significant variance in those diagrams. But I guess we'll see. A contour plot would help, but I think there certainly appears to be 2 different populations there to me.
  15. QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ Jul 14, 2010 -> 02:41 PM) Good. I hate the idea of a "Death Tax" The idea that it's actually a death tax is laughable.
  16. And my point in response is that it's you who are pretending that they actually have a choice. You tried to outline the other things they could do...and basically it comes down to "Stop giving your kids TV and Cell phones", "Find a better job" and "stop being so lazy!" and sticking your hands in your ears when someone points out that working full time isn't exactly easy and that there aren't a whole lot of jobs available out there. To me, this is a symptom of a cycle that is nearly impossible to break. To you, it's tough luck, here's a lecture and my scorn.
  17. QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ Jul 14, 2010 -> 02:27 PM) The retroactive part, or the entire death tax? I'll bet the entire thing, because the Dems will cave and Obama won't veto it...but any bill to bring it back retroactively would have to have 60 votes. Good luck getting that past this Senate...let alone the next one.
  18. QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Jul 14, 2010 -> 02:27 PM) Hey guess what, life's a b****. You pay for what you get. Unless you decide to pay for a cell phone.
  19. QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ Jul 14, 2010 -> 02:25 PM) ummm... actually if the tax is reinstated (which I whole heartedly oppose), I heard it might be retroactive to Jan 1, 2010. The next Congress will make sure that doesn't happen.
  20. QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Jul 14, 2010 -> 02:19 PM) Oh god! What to do! Maybe use a computer lab?! Oh the humanity!!!!!!!! Well, good thing there's the time to spend a full day with the kids as well as working a full time minimum wage job and attending classes. How dare you not make your kids a nutritious dinner!
  21. QUOTE (chw42 @ Jul 14, 2010 -> 02:17 PM) Like...? De Aza going back to the DL.
  22. QUOTE (SoxFan1 @ Jul 14, 2010 -> 02:17 PM) I'd freaking love that team. Really, that is a ridiculously solid lineup and it ought to have a good shot at the #2 spot in the East.
  23. QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Jul 14, 2010 -> 02:14 PM) OR, the should get a job/better job so the government doesn't have to provide everything for them. Again, what an AWFUL expectation. Yup. Because you know what's ridiculously plentiful right now? Jobs! Not only that, good, better than Walmart jobs! They're all over the place. And you have to find those without using a computer too! That's totally simple! Or maybe they could go back to college. But wait, they have to get through that with no computer and cell phone.
