06/08/2010 - 7:10 CST, CSN - Floyd vs. Galarraga
QUOTE (Thad Bosley @ Jun 8, 2010 -> 10:56 PM) Feint praise, unfortunately. Fine. The Sox's offense this year is barely, barely below the relative offense output of the 2005 world series champs. They finished the season 9th in offense; we're 10th right now.

HH retrospective
It's been really nice to see all the messages for the Hawk tonight. Really a darn shame they couldn't give him a better score. You can really tell that has Hawk all bummed out, even in a bad season he wanted a win tonight.

So, can Randy Williams give up more than Thornton?

QUOTE (fathom @ Jun 8, 2010 -> 10:49 PM) Do you know what we were in the first half of year vs second half of year last season? Pre all-star, the Sox were 11th in the AL in Runs. Post all star, they were 13th. Compared even to just the 1st half offense last year...this year's sox offense is outhitting them.

QUOTE (fathom @ Jun 8, 2010 -> 10:48 PM) I thought you said it was the Sox who came in 10th last year. The sox were 12th last year, they're 10th this year. We are better offensively in 2010 than we were in 2009 with Thome, Dye, and the great Podsednik. The Tigers were the #10 offense in the AL last year, and they led the Central most of the year.

QUOTE (fathom @ Jun 8, 2010 -> 10:46 PM) Mark Kotsay is a great bench player to have. Let him start maybe once every 8-9 games, come in to face tough righty relievers, and let him play 1B if Konerko is hurt. The problem is the way he's been used. The Kotsay/Jones combo has 16 home runs.

QUOTE (fathom @ Jun 8, 2010 -> 10:45 PM) And we all agreed that last year's offense just wasn't good enough. However, I COMPLETELY agree with what you're saying. It's hard to win when almost all of your main players are having bad years. The team that finished 10th in the AL in offense last year played game 163 against the Twins. You can win with this level of offense...with the level we're getting right now...if you can pitch. We can't do anything.

QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Jun 8, 2010 -> 10:43 PM) I think the biggest problem with Vizquel and Kotsay are not the players themselves, but rather that they being on the roster is emblematic of a larger problem in the way we approached things this offseason. Mainly, how we showed a disturbing trend to settle for guys on this team that we had unrealistic expectations for. We wanted these guys to surprise us with results, we didn’t expect them. Which guy did we have unrealistic expectations for? Which guy were we counting on to surprise us, unrealistically? Beckham? Quentin? Peavy? Buehrle? Floyd? Danks?

QUOTE (fathom @ Jun 8, 2010 -> 10:41 PM) This roster needed a lot of near career years to compete in this division it felt like from the offense. This offense is actually outperforming last year's offense. We're 10th in the AL right now; last year we were 12th.

QUOTE (flavum @ Jun 8, 2010 -> 10:40 PM) I could sit here and write a laundry list of reasons why the Sox are bad. Kotsay and Vizquel are just names you cannot win with no matter what else is going on with this team. Really? You base your ability to win entirely off of the backups? If Quentin had 25 home runs right now, Beckham was hitting .300, Jenks had a 1.03 WHIP, and the big 4 pitchers all had ERA's under 3.5, this team would be in 4th place because of Kotsay and Vizquel?

QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Jun 8, 2010 -> 10:39 PM) I wouldn't go that far, nor would i give him all the blame here. He got us Peavy, Beckham and Rios. It's not his fault that two of these franchise cornerstones didn't bother showing up. Don't forget Carlos Quentin.

QUOTE (iamshack @ Jun 8, 2010 -> 10:39 PM) I just can't accept this line of reasoning. This roster was fine. The players are just all regressing to absolute s*** at one time. It's almost impossible to comprehend. You're going to deservedly get in trouble saying "This roster was fine". This roster had some obvious weaknesses. But the problem continues to be the failure of its supposed strengths.

QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Jun 8, 2010 -> 10:36 PM) Strasburg has Verlander's heat and Wood's curve. And Verlander had a year or so where he really struggled after the league started to adapt to his stuff and he tried to work on his mechanics some.

QUOTE (flavum @ Jun 8, 2010 -> 10:35 PM) It really is an indictment on Kenny Williams that they have nobody better to replace Teahen. We have Omar Vizquel and Mark Kotsay in our everyday lineup....in 2010!! What a bad organization this is right now. It's embarrassingly bad. Omar Vizquel and Mark Kotsay continue to not be the problem.

The Official Stephen Strasburg needs Tommy John Thread
QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Jun 8, 2010 -> 10:24 PM) That was amazing. I honestly he could have K'd twenty if he hadn't been pulled. He'd have had to strike out 13 in a row to end the game.

Day 2 Draft thread
QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Jun 8, 2010 -> 10:33 PM) So, it turns out that Ozzie actually was really upset that Ozney fell. This coming from a guy who said that we shoudn't draft the kid as a favor to him. It's not a surpise to see how his children behave, when he himself acts like a hypocritical child. http://www.chicagobreakingsports.com/2010/...-usf-bound.html Reality is...it's probably his family matters that contributed to him plummeting.

QUOTE (fathom @ Jun 8, 2010 -> 10:33 PM) yes, but he never had close to the command and repeatable delivery that Strasburg has. Wood also never had anything close to a change-up. I'll agree with you that he looks really good, I just think it's abject foolishness to start talking HOF after one start, even if you add the injury qualifier.

QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Jun 8, 2010 -> 10:31 PM) Tonight and Scherzer's 14 K game against the A's have been easily the two best pitching performances I've witnessed this season. And there have been 3 no hitters/perfect games.

QUOTE (fathom @ Jun 8, 2010 -> 10:29 PM) Prior's fastball average was like 94 mph and he never really perfected his change-up. Strasburg is like a combo of Wood's stuff with Prior's command. Wood is actually a really good example, because he's a guy who had great stuff, and even before the injuries took over, he never put everything together for more than brief stretches.

Olney: Sox to start trading away vets
QUOTE (chisoxt @ Jun 8, 2010 -> 10:26 PM) The White Sox have no choice. How can this team win next year with the players that they have either on the parent club or in the farm system. They can't. Acquire free agents, you may suuggest? Not with the money tied up with Peavy and Rios. If the pitching staff could pull their heads out of their tails, and Beckham and Quentin could figure out what a baseball bat is used for (other than hitting themselves in the heads with it), then this team could snap out of it real quick. You'd only have a couple holes to fill, and you'd have money to do it. Sadly, beckham and Quentin seem like lost causes right now.

QUOTE (fathom @ Jun 8, 2010 -> 10:27 PM) Agreed, and you know I was on here telling certain posters that those wins were worthless You know, even if we'd have had a higher pick by a couple, there's a good shot we'd have wound up with Gordon anyway.
