QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jun 1, 2010 -> 10:04 AM) Eh? How is that a retort? You just re-stated half my argument and left off the other half. Its like you assumed I was taking the "ITS ALL WASTE" argument without actuall reading my post, where you would have seen I said clearly it was all the above. I would say that I think I misunderstood the meaning of your clause about waste/corruption on my first reading.

America's Infrastructure
QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jun 1, 2010 -> 09:49 AM) Anyone who thinks that throwing more money at it will solve all the problems, or who thinks that the marginal amount of waste or corruption is making it impossible, is just being stubborn to defend one particular agenda. To retort; anyone who believes that these problems can be solved without spending a lot more money is doing exactly the same thing.

If Phil was this good at working the refs and the mind of the other team back during the Bulls years, I can't say I remember it.

America's Infrastructure
QUOTE (iamshack @ Jun 1, 2010 -> 05:43 AM) I saw the same documentary. The dams in particular was incredibly scary. There are something like 2400 dams in South Dakota and only 2 inspectors or something? Texas has over 7000 dams, and employs 7 inspectors, and I believe that's an increase from when the original documentary aired and people started asking questions about why they only had 2. I can't remember exactly which state, but I think it was Mississippi that didn't employ a single inspector.

America's Infrastructure
QUOTE (Y2HH @ Jun 1, 2010 -> 09:19 AM) Besides, roads and bridges are all being repaired by the Obama bailouts...I saw it when driving down south on my last camping trip...the only problem is I see these same roads getting repaired every year, whether it's with bailout funds or not. You know why I'd guess that is? Because there's not enough money available to do what needs to be done; complete rebuilds of some roads. So, they wind up with half-arsed repairs done every few years to keep them operating once a problem crops up. It's vastly more expensive than a complete rebuild in the long run, but you don't need to come up with all the funds at once. Symptom of the same problem.

I find it to be an interesting look at the American Character that no matter how complex these events were, a group of people are still not able to accept them being as history records them.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ May 31, 2010 -> 06:54 PM) It depends on what 10 pitches we are talking about and how well conditioned they are. Didn't Jose Canseco nearly destroy his arm by throwing an inning as a relief pitcher?

Mark Teahen to the DL, Lillibridge Recalled
If Lilliputian is going up and Beckham is going down, I think we can safely say that KW's analysis of the first section of the season is "Epic fail, time to shake up". If that move happens, I'd be surprised if AJ isn't dealt.

QUOTE (Tex @ May 31, 2010 -> 03:05 PM) I assume the government would have to sub contract this to someone, I doubt we have a underwater well plugging up crew" so all we would be doing is contracting with BP or someone like BP. Sucks Actually, we do have people who are quite skilled at plugging up burst wells. They made a fortune and piled up their experience capping wells in Kuwait in 91. The problem is...the "Top Kill" technique...that was their method. Here's the NYT running a gushing profile of the outside contractor helping set up the Top-Kill and how it was going to work beautifully to kill off the well. Run a couple days before they actually tried the thing.

QUOTE (Tex @ May 31, 2010 -> 08:58 AM) I was watching an interesting documentary on the History Channel and the state of our roads, bridges, sewer, water, and electric grid is appalling. I use to think we would fall because of our debt, but now I'm thinking running out of electricity and not being able to flush a toilet may cripple up first. What you've got to realize for a moment Tex is that they're both part of the same problem. In both cases, the people who have run the government, especially for the last 30 years or so, have preached a philosophy where you can have your tax cuts and nothing will ever fail because of it. I've seen the same documentary. When you aren't willing to pay higher taxes for anything and rail against that horrendous "Waste", what gets cut? Things like dam inspections, road repair, upkeep of levee systems, updating of the electrical grid, etc.- R-wing fanatics trying to get traction

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ May 31, 2010 -> 02:10 PM) Beckham and Quentin getting on track would do a hell of a lot to improve this team. We've been saying that for about 4-6 weeks now though too, so who knows. Ditto Peavy and Floyd.- NBA playoffs thread
QUOTE (GoodAsGould @ May 30, 2010 -> 10:34 PM) Right, thats true I suppose. Although in Roethlesbeger's case it seemed like the DA just didnt have enough evidence to pursue while with Bryant it never got that far. That would be what my instincts say about both cases as well, but in neither case can I prove it, I can just guess based on my judgement of the public statements in each case. But I do have to note I can't prove that Kobe didn't break the law also, and the fact that no charges were brought doesn't mean nothing happened in either case.- NBA playoffs thread
QUOTE (GoodAsGould @ May 30, 2010 -> 10:31 PM) Apparently you missed the didnt even go to trial part Roethlisberger didn't go to trial either; that doesn't mean that something inappropriate didn't happen. (FWIW, I think Bryant brushed up against the law but didn't explicitly violate it, but I wanted to point that out too).- The environment thread
