The Official "Let's Not Fire Anyone" Thread
Balta1701 replied to Steve9347's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (AWhiteSoxinNJ @ Apr 14, 2010 -> 04:28 PM) I would actually have no problem sending down Beckham, I think we rushed him to begin with as a quick fix band-aid. While the exact timing may have been band-aid...has he not proven he belongs? -
Pinella takes Soriano out in a double switch. The crowd gives Pinella a standing O for it.

QUOTE (Cknolls @ Apr 14, 2010 -> 04:02 PM) But the two biggest are, and I believe that is what Balta is referring to: MS and GS. They should have lost that ability when they apid back their money. No one has a problem with investment firms unless they're TBTF. They can go bankrupt and you don't care.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Apr 14, 2010 -> 03:47 PM) His version is in the Trib today. And he attributes everything to "Sources" or to the Yahoo article. -
QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Apr 14, 2010 -> 03:38 PM) LOL at Soriano and that contract. Just think...we had him for McCarthy. The only thing that saved us was that he decided he'd rather test the market than sign an extension at the time. We wound up with Danks out of that.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Apr 14, 2010 -> 03:37 PM) Even if you want to ignore more laws, there were all of those great government regulators approving all of these mergers that made these companies. By the way, you are now talking about brokerages and not banks, which have a whole different set of rules in many of their products. So in other words, we need more stringent regulations about what mergers are allowed. I can live with that. And correct me if I'm wrong...but aren't all the brokerages now considered "Bank holding companies" so that they can take advantage of the bailouts? I'm pretty sure calling them banks is now actually accurate.

I'm listening to the Brewers broadcast to enjoy Uecker, and I could figure out before he said "Soriano has trouble picking it up" that Soriano was having defensive issues on a double by Weeks...because the boo's started.

QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Apr 14, 2010 -> 01:55 PM) I'll take that over the 1.8 percent chance we have at getting a top 3 pick because that just isn't happening again. It's actually a 0.3% chance from the 11th spot. -
QUOTE (The Ginger Kid @ Apr 14, 2010 -> 02:56 PM) what's with all the day games in Detoilet? Home Opener followed closely by a Walk Day, I guess.
-
QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Apr 14, 2010 -> 02:24 PM) I doubt it. Talk to me again when he's 26-27 and has been in the league a few years. I could legitimately see him having developed to that point by then, if we're lucky.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Apr 14, 2010 -> 01:16 PM) The anti-trust laws? When's the last time any of those were used for anything? Breaking up AT&T in the 80s? Yeah, that worked great. Thank God we broke that up into multiple companies, I'd hate for AT&T to have reassembled into a behemoth that provides godawful service on everything but is the only company that provides home phone service in my area. Anyway...There's an easy objection to that. Would you have considered Lehman Brothers or Bear Stearns to be a trust before they went down? Or AIG? In every market, they all had competition, there were multiple other firms doing the same thing. The problem wasn't that they were monopolistically inhibiting interstate commerce (although I'm starting to think that GS is coming close now), the problem was that they were so interconnected that when they failed it put everyone else on the verge of failing with them. Basically, you can be TBTF without coming anywhere close to the anti-trust rules.

Is there anyone in the AL we don't expect Joe Mauer to outhit?

DV was assigned to Charlotte this year pretty early in training camp, so we didn't see much of him up with the big boys this year. He's started off the season with his stats looking disturbingly like those of last season. 6/24 for a .250 batting average, 2 2b, 0 HR, 1 BB, 8 k's. Don't know if it's noted in this thread yet, but he's a 1b now! Come on kid, flex your power.org.

If it hit him, it barely clipped the top of his shoe; the impact was on the dirt between his feet.

I hate that I even need to bother posting these but I guess someone has to. Yet another investigation into the hacked CRU emails decides that no, the scientists did nothing wrong.

Nationals make offer to Dye; Dye declines

Dye wants a job with the Mariners. I think they have an opening in RF, right? -
QUOTE (Y2HH @ Apr 14, 2010 -> 11:59 AM) I have plenty of water to drink. If anything, warming will give us even MORE water. Depends on where you are.

Let's go D1 and DR1 -
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Apr 14, 2010 -> 11:56 AM) And just like any of this stuff, there are rules on the book against it, once again it is another way the government has completely failed. If banks are too big, it is because the regulators and the federal government looked the other way while it happened. There's no rules on the book about how big banks can be?

QUOTE (bmags @ Apr 13, 2010 -> 07:01 PM) Let me give you my impression from being in journalism. There is a LOT that we know, that we can't report. This was a book basically about all that. I'm sure this was all the gossip going on at the time that they knew was happening but you can't report this stuff in the paper. and frankly, when thinking about that, it makes that NY Times article understandable, not right, of course, but i think you saw some reporters trying to show what they knew, but couldn't go on the record reporting. The problem I have wiht that type of journalism is...there's always motivation behind gossip. It's never unvarnished truth...it's the opinion of one side, and it's usually the angrier side who gets all the attention.

QUOTE (Y2HH @ Apr 14, 2010 -> 09:37 AM) I woke up this morning, and while walking out to my car on this particular glorious morning, I looked up at the Sun -- the king of our solar system -- and thanked it for global warming. Now you wouldn't believe me if I told you, but I'm sure it smiled down upon me and slightly nodded -- and I could swear the temperature rose two degrees at that moment. It was glorious. :headbang Then I realized I hadn't had water to drink in 4 days because my hometown had become a desert...

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Apr 14, 2010 -> 11:27 AM) He's right in one way, if the government isn't subsidizing risky behavior, it is a lot less likely to happen. Of course we as a country won't stand for their being consequences for anything. If there are consequences for anything the banks do, they'll just take the economy and go home.

QUOTE (lostfan @ Apr 13, 2010 -> 05:58 PM) Should I read Game Change? If you're into random political gossip leaked anonymously by a lot of people with unknown agendas and compiled into book form, sure.

QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Apr 13, 2010 -> 05:49 PM) Well that's just as ridiculous to be making 400k+ as an administrator. I looked at my specific school and saw teachers making 100k (in a 10k population town). That's fine and great, especialy when they have 25+ years experience. But to get a pension on top of that? It's been a while since I looked at it, but don't you get like 75% of your last 3-4 years of salary, and then a cost of living percentage increase every year thereafter? In other words, millions per teacher if they live to their life expectancy. Is that counting benefits like the $20,000+/family health care plan and the pension plan costs? My mother's been a 25 year+ teacher, and she's no where near that salary.
