QUOTE (ptatc @ Jan 12, 2010 -> 03:51 PM) HGH is another story. The studies done with HGH have been done on children under the age of 18 who had growth abnormalities. vision could be effected with normal growth. This is one thing that scares the medical profession about HGH. While it natural occurs in the body it effects more than just muscle tissue so the long term effects on normal adults could be truly terrifying. The HGH is what everyone seems to be saying has the biggest effect on vision, per the anecdotes.

QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Jan 12, 2010 -> 03:50 PM) Don't get me wrong, I love Thome. He's a great person and was one hell of a baseball player. I'm just tired of seeing him out there and I don't think he's the same player he once was. IMO, we don't need him to be the same player he was, we just need him to be an adequate platoon-type DH who hits 20 home runs in 300 ab's and takes a lot of walks over 300-400 AB's. Edit: and I'd take that from anyone who we brought in as a DH.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jan 12, 2010 -> 03:46 PM) The 25 man roster depends on if he has any options remaining. If he does, we can send him down. If he doesn't he has to pass through waivers, and then he can deny the senddown and become a free agent. I don't know if he has any options or not. According to Kalapse's chart, he has 2 option years remaining.

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jan 12, 2010 -> 03:39 PM) In which case, just drop him from the 40 now, since he's unprotected anyway (we claimed him, and I believe we have to put him on the 25 to protect him, yes?). I could have swore we claimed him as a minor leaguer or something like that.
-
BTW, the more I look at that bench, the more it makes sense to sign a DH who could also back up one of the infield positions in a pinch.
-
QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jan 12, 2010 -> 03:35 PM) Jones is the 4th, and we sign a DH, I'd bet. I'm guessing we don't have a 5th bench guy, which means an OF like De Aza is the odd man out. There's very little reason for De Aza to make this team out of ST unless someone gets hurt. He ought to start in Charlotte anyway, see if he can stay healthy and get everyday at bats in a league that he should be better than.
-
QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jan 12, 2010 -> 03:33 PM) I personally would drop De Aza or Lillibridge, if they are allowed to, but I doubt they will. The trade may involve a different 40 man slot too, though. Dropping De Aza after already claiming him would be quite silly.

QUOTE (justBLAZE @ Jan 12, 2010 -> 03:30 PM) If we carry 7 relief pitchers that means that Andruw Jones is our DH or Nix doesn't fit on the active roster? 7 relief pitchers = 12 man pitching staff, 9 regulars including 1 DH, leaving 4 bench spots. If Jones is the full time DH, that leaves: Castro Vizquel Kotsay and 1 open bench spot.

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jan 12, 2010 -> 03:28 PM) I'd guess Armstrong is DFA'd, not Marquez, because KW liked Marquez so much. I'd bet they want to give him a chance to show his stuff in AAA when healthy, before giving up. Only problem is...if you want to sign a DH as well, you need an extra 40 man slot for him as well.
-
QUOTE (iamshack @ Jan 12, 2010 -> 03:28 PM) Why else would this move have taken so long? Because there are multiple backup catchers' on the market, and Castro was reportedly talking with other teams (there was a rumor a couple weeks ago he was close to signing with the Blue Jays but that seemingly fell through).
-
QUOTE (iamshack @ Jan 12, 2010 -> 03:24 PM) OR, KW could make the obvious move and go out and sign Thome now. Really, he has to now. I could understand keeping the DH slot open if you wanted FLowers to get 200 AB's there. You can't platoon Jones and Kotsay at your DH spot, you just can't.
-
QUOTE (flavum @ Jan 12, 2010 -> 03:22 PM) I definitely think Armstrong and Marquez are the two top candidates for a DFA. I haven't gotten enough in the way of specific medical reports since last May, but Marquez was dealing with bone spurs when he was pitching last year. If it were me, I'd want to see if he could recover from that before cutting him loose. But then again, if it came down to Marquez vs. signing a DH, the choice is obvious.
-
QUOTE (flavum @ Jan 12, 2010 -> 03:16 PM) So who gets dumped from the 40-man? Marquez? Cole Armstrong would be my guess.
-
QUOTE (elrockinMT @ Jan 12, 2010 -> 03:20 PM) Why do we think Flowesr will be traded? Because he's our most valuable position playing piece in the minors. You want to do a major deal, you pretty much have to include him.
-
This was the right move. Knowing AJ's history, Flowers would only have gotten a handful of AB's. Plus it saves us a year pre-arbitration on him, lets him develop a little more in the hitter's park of Charlotte, and maybe lets him build up trade value if we do decide we really like one of the other catchers we have at a lower level.

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jan 12, 2010 -> 02:54 PM) The latest report on Delgado was that the Mets had scouted him twice in PR and he was having a hard time moving at 1B...and that they wanted to continue to monitor the situation and look for some improvement. The nice thing for a team in the AL would be...he doesn't have to move at 1b, he only has to move with the bat and on the bases.

Zoinks. That explains a lot. The Lions Offensive line has been manned by Pistons for the last 5 years.

QUOTE (Jenks Heat @ Jan 12, 2010 -> 02:11 PM) Reggie Bush I guess........it seemd to me that there was always soemthing there. Yeah, Bush. The stuff about him didn't come out until what, 2006, 2007?
-
QUOTE (ptatc @ Jan 12, 2010 -> 02:13 PM) it really doesn't directly improve vision. What it will do is increase your focus which will indirectly help you "see the ball better." How exactly can you say with 100% confidence that abusing these drugs at the levels that they're used doesn't actually increase the eye's visual acuity? There's never been a legit study on this because you can't load people up with steroids and HGH to do a normal double-blind study.
-
QUOTE (Jenks Heat @ Jan 12, 2010 -> 02:03 PM) I am not a fan of either but thus far thre hasn't been the smoke that leads to a fire and you would think that especially with Saben that you would have heard something by now. How long was it at USC before the smoke really started for Carroll?
-
QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jan 12, 2010 -> 02:03 PM) You consider Thome a "not so good hitter"? Or for that matter, Branyan, Blalock, or Delgado?
-
QUOTE (Jenks Heat @ Jan 12, 2010 -> 01:19 PM) USC got all of the hoopla and pagentry but at the end of the day he is nowhere near the coach Saben, Tressell, or Meyer are and that will be eveident very soon. What makes you think the same stuff won't eventually come out about Saban and Meyer?
-
QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jan 12, 2010 -> 12:33 PM) Adding muscle isn't going to reduce bat speed, unless he puts on like body-builder type mass, which isn't what anyone is talking about here. And even if he does put on body-builder type mass...did Barry Bonds or Jason Giambi lose bat speed when they went from twigs to monsters?

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jan 12, 2010 -> 10:33 AM) I was waiting for you to attack this article. At the end of the day, this whole thing just proved one thing. You can't measure jobs saved. Thanks for that. Um, you directly contradict the article's final statement. Stating that a simple study seemingly not done intelligently failed appropriately measure something does not mean that the measurement is impossible.

QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Jan 12, 2010 -> 10:43 AM) Well his cheating will be severely restricted in the NFL. Time to see what kind of coach he really is Yup. I can't think of a single NFL coach who's won multiple championships and then later been proven to be breaking the rules.
