QUOTE (Capn12 @ Jan 7, 2010 -> 08:26 AM) There is really no comparison, cane sugar based sodas are above and beyond better than HFCS ones. Unfortunately, HFCS sodas are cheaper to make, therefore, thats the crap we get. Slight edit; the HFCS sodas are heavily subsidized by the government and are therefore cheaper to make to the company.

QUOTE (gatnom @ Jan 7, 2010 -> 02:21 AM) Am I the only one who remembers this going on in the summer? Or has my life been a lie for the last 6 months? No, you're not. Every time a company does this promotion they're finding its successful at boosting sales, so they keep doing it and they're starting to do it more often. But just like everything that increases costs, they're loathe to do it full-time.

QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Jan 7, 2010 -> 03:45 AM) How many teams like Hinrich and Thomas? Hinrich & Thomas for Boozer Hinrich for Butler Thomas for Harrington Hinrich and Thomas for Bosh\ Anyway, if I could do that for Bosh I would, if I could extend him, since it could be used to try and lure Wade to town. The reason those 2 keep getting talked about together is that their salaries together right now total about $15 million. -
QUOTE (iamshack @ Jan 7, 2010 -> 08:55 AM) Notice the common denominator here....bad quarterbacks throwing to under-developed TE's... I don't think that's the common denominator at all here. I think the common denominator is people here ignoring the actual numbers of these TE's in order to bash them. Vernon Davis is being bashed now? Seriously? Come on people, I understand not realizing how good Olsen's end of season numbers actually looked, but come on, don't do it to Davis also. 78 catches, 965 yards, 13 TD. 5th in the league in Receiving yards for a TE, 5th in the league in receptions for a TE, tied with Shiancoe, Moss, and Fitzgerald for most receiving touchdowns in the league for any position. If he was playing for the Saints, Giants, Cowboys, whatever, you'd hear his name every week.

QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Jan 6, 2010 -> 11:10 PM) Scott Merkin gets on my god damn nerves. He seriously needs to take the White Sox dildo out his ass. And whoever it was that scouted Viciedo needs to be fired or something. A 1B? Whoopie! Really? You'd have a problem with him turning into a 1b?

QUOTE (Leonard Zelig @ Jan 6, 2010 -> 04:21 PM) So who are you picking to win the NL Central? If the Brewers can find some pitching, they might have a legit shot again.

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jan 6, 2010 -> 04:39 PM) Baines stays in with 6.1%, Ventura fails to make the cut. Edgar Martinez that far ahead of Baines? I'm not sure about that. There's been some serious debate about Edgar this year. It's entirely possible he could start moving up from there, esp. if Thomas goes in as mostly a DH at some point. -

QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Jan 6, 2010 -> 04:11 PM) They got zero development out of Greg Olsen. His numbers have improved each year he's been there. I hear what you're saying, but the numbers say he's slowly getting better.
-
Well, at least the Bears have been seen in 2 and won one.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jan 6, 2010 -> 02:59 PM) Bingo. For all practical purposes, Olsen has been a bust so far. After looking at his nubmers this year I certainly wouldn't call him a bust, he was 10th in the league in catches as a TE, tied for 4th in the league in TD's as a TE. But he's not exactly Dallas Clark or Vernon Davis just yet, so he's not a pro bowler/star.
-
Zoroaster has provided him with that knowledge.

QUOTE (Brian @ Jan 6, 2010 -> 02:35 PM) I find it odd the Bears fired the TE coach. Clark and Olsen are pretty damn effective even though Desmond dropped some passes this year. Sounds like a firing to make it look like they are firing someone. Was anyone seriously wowed by Olsen's performance this year?

QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Jan 6, 2010 -> 02:08 PM) How the hell is Alomar not a 1st ballot hall of famer. He is the greatest 2nd baseman of all time. They're already projecting ahead to Beckham. -

QUOTE (whitesoxfan99 @ Jan 6, 2010 -> 02:06 PM) The people who vote on the HOF are morons. They'll get there eventually. -
QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jan 6, 2010 -> 01:45 PM) Eh, sort of. Right now, rail is a small fraction of the pie. Even if its improved dramatically, its still going to be a minority. The real reason why terrorist acts will start hitting rail - which they might - is that security isn't nearly as tight. I still think if they're smart at all, they go after either a mall near X-Mas time or go after a school. That's how you paralyze this country. But they've always been more interested in the spectacular, world-changing attack than the actual strategic type attacks.

Damn that hurts my eyes, and I'm wearing glasses now to prevent that.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jan 6, 2010 -> 01:49 PM) I do understand that, but at some point the bottom line comes into account, and the Cards have NEVER been a team to spend a ton of money. I don't see them cutting into the bottom line to the degree that it would take to keep Pujols and a competative team. You are talking about something like $45 to $50 million a season for two players, if Albert gets something close to, or more than, ARod. Then you still have to pay 23 other players. If this move costs them Pujols, it's a terrible business decision. What do we think the salary difference between Holliday and Pujols will be over the span of this contract? Probably about $10 million a season, give or take. Now, really, in terms of marketing, merchandise, and the value of the franchise, do we think that Albert Pujols is worth an extra $10 million a year to the Cardinals? I'd say absolutely. If you had to pick between, simply as a business decision, offering Pujols $28 million a year and offering Holliday $17 million a year and losing Pujols, keeping the every-year-MVP is an easy, obvious decision.

QUOTE (Alpha Dog @ Jan 6, 2010 -> 01:10 PM) Don't I pay gas taxes, income taxes and tolls to the tollway? Yup. That's the government subsidy I'm talking about. You only pay a limited amount (tolls) to use those roads directly, and usually that doesn't even cover the cost of the roads. Furthermore, you're allowed to pollute the air and pump out CO2 and send money to Middle Eastern nations without having to suffer any of the consequences of those actions either. If passenger and freight rail were subsidized at anywhere near the level that driving on roads is, you might have had choices in your transportation methods.
-
QUOTE (Alpha Dog @ Jan 6, 2010 -> 01:08 PM) Really? The 17 years I spent driving 110 miles a day on the tri-state and other tollways could have been subsidized? Wish I would have known. Did you drive on roads?
-
QUOTE (iamshack @ Jan 6, 2010 -> 01:01 PM) That and being willing to pay over slot. Until Porcello last year, did they really get a major impact at the big league level from guys they dumped money onto? Miller is the other one who comes to mind, but they dealt him.

QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Jan 6, 2010 -> 12:51 PM) In 2008? I must have missed that while watching the Sox and Twins in their 1 game playoff. I believe bmags is talking about the Tigers pre 08 trade for Willis and Cabrera that had everyone penciling them in for a World Series. Didnt quite happen that way Post-2004 was when they really started spending money, it took them a couple years to really get results, but don't forget the size of the hole they had to dig themselves out of. Ordonez, IRod, Sheffield, Polonco, Kenny "what's that on your hand" Rogers, Nate Robertson, Todd Jones etc. They had some decent performance from the draft as well, but that's also expected when you get top picks from being awful (Verlander).

QUOTE (Leonard Zelig @ Jan 6, 2010 -> 11:32 AM) Just end this nonsense already. Hell, the only way to kill the forwards thread was to start the reverse thread. I'm scared of what it would take to kill this one.
-
QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jan 6, 2010 -> 10:45 AM) If the rail system can improve its infrastructure, and get around the current contention issues with freight rail, you will start to see some of that shifting occur. I don't see driving becoming much more popular, unless gas prices decline notably and sustainably. You're forgetting the fact that this country continues to provide huge subsidies for increasing driving.
