QUOTE (BearSox @ May 26, 2009 -> 07:52 PM) I would love to get Rooney back in the radio booth with Farmer. And then have D.J. go to the MLBNetwork and be one of their commentators and analysts. Never gonna happen, but I can hope. Everyone would love Rooney back. But I've really enjoyed the Farmer/DJ pairing so far this year. Yeah, it's not anything involving Steve Stone but it has been pretty good to me.

QUOTE (joejoedairy @ May 26, 2009 -> 07:45 PM) wow the magic can hit some 3's I looked away from that score while writing an email and there was a 14 point swing.

QUOTE (fathom @ May 26, 2009 -> 07:25 PM) Hawk, Stone, and KW have ripped on Colon lately. That sounds painful. Does it require surgery?

Grady Sizemore's hurting and may be headed to the DL. The Indians also demoted Matt LaPorta, called up Trevor Crowe.

Fernando Martinez up.

QUOTE (Soxbadger @ May 26, 2009 -> 03:35 PM) Im leaving work, Ill post more later. But in the original Gulf War, the US did not penetrate to Baghdad, nor did it destroy the weapons capability (unless you dont believe George W. Bush). So what would be the point of another Gulf War where you just have to fight a second war 9-10 years later? I was comparing the forces of the second Gulf War, when they were actually able to get rid of Saddam and theoretically destroy the weapon making capabilities. (Ill comment more later, just wanted to clarify that I was exclusively referring to the second Gulf War). This is unimportant. IN 1991, the coalition armies could have danced their way to Baghdad if they wanted to. After the ground assault, the Iraqi Army was broken, their tanks were gone, their soldiers were surrendering by the hundreds of thousands. Even the crack, well equipped "Republican Guard" for all practical purposes had been obliterated. The first President Bush made the choice that ripping down the government would destabilize the region more (see: 2003-present) and chose not to take Baghdad. The defeat was so complete that the Iraqis gave up a huge amount of military sovereignty; they allowed the U.N. to dismantle their WMD programs (and they did in fact do so) and no-fly zones were established covering like 1/2 of that country.

QUOTE (greg775 @ May 26, 2009 -> 03:29 PM) So what's the word on CQ by now? Is he on the DL? Pardon my ignorance. First time I've heard a pop is a good thing. Tell that to my lower right leg last summer when jogging up hill. Ouch. He has certainly not been put on the DL; that would be published as a press release. He may still wind up there, but it hasn't happened yet. Last update had him still "Day to day".

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ May 26, 2009 -> 03:27 PM) I really seem to recall that Iraq had something like the 6th or 7th biggest army in the world during the original Gulf War numbering something like a million people. I don't have time to look now, but I remember that for some reason. Didn't you know I was already typing the post with the answer?

If we go back in time to 1991, this was the state of the Iraqi army: At the time, the Iraqi army was a veteran, experience, very well equipped fighting force, while the coalition forces were comparatively smaller by a factor of nearly 2 and didn't have nearly the experience that the Iraqi army had gained fighting Iran. The coalition was that much better equipped, better trained, had better airpower (winner!), and had much better leadership. A war with North Korea is a war that the U.S./coalition could win easily, if China didn't get involved. The problem is that Seoul and Tokyo are within North Korea's weapons range. It's the same reason why countries no longer try to push Israel back in to the ocean...you may beat them, but they're taking everyone with them if they go down. Iraq couldn't really do that; the best they had was Kuwait City and oilfields to burn, along with a few non-nuclear scuds. And by 2003, their Chemical/Bio weapons were gone, so they couldn't fire those off as they were collapsing either.

QUOTE (lostfan @ May 26, 2009 -> 03:16 PM) You know what would be awesome, sneaking a nuke into Pyongyang, setting it off, and then saying it went off by accident and blaming the North Koreans for not knowing what the f*** they were doing. Unfortunately...the forensics on a nuclear detonation are actually pretty easy to do (if you have a western style isotope chemistry lab). If you gave me the records of the atmospheric signatures produced when the Soviets were detonating bombs, the Americans were detonating bombs, and the Koreans were reprocessing those fuel rods, I could probably go outside a couple days after the explosion, collect some dust, walk downstairs, and a few hours later tell you which country built it.

QUOTE (mr_genius @ May 26, 2009 -> 02:57 PM) i don't see why the GOP would bother to protest the nomination, but they probably will anyways. I don't see why they wouldn't. They haven't had a chance to genuinely make the abortion arguments in years. Decades even.

QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ May 26, 2009 -> 03:01 PM) What's the alternative? Keep telling them no while we watch them build and test and then eventually obtain a nuke? We've tried economic sanctions, they agreed to stop, but they lied (same response twice now right?) I think strategic missile strikes and ousting Kim Krazy would be sufficient to send the message. I dont think it would be easy, or without a cost, but what's the purpose of obtaining a nuke? To use it right? So whose going to be the victim and is it in our best interest to protect them? And who comes to their aid? I really dont think either China or Russia would stand in the way if Europe, Asia and the US give it the green light. I'm pretty sure that successfully testing a nuclear bomb = them having a nuclear weapon. This one didn't fizzle. It worked. I don't know how much plutonium they reprocessed in 2003 while we were dealing with Iraq (yes, that's actually when they did it), but if they had more than what they've used in these first 2 devices, then it's logical to conclude that they have more. And Tokyo, Honolulu, and possibly Seattle and L.A. are already within range of their missiles; you don't have to be all that accurate with a 20 kiloton weapon. If nothing else, please warn me before you try anything that could possibly be considered a "Military Option". I want to drive to Texas first.

QUOTE (lostfan @ May 26, 2009 -> 01:39 PM) Nope, not when you live on the East Coast and it starts at 10. You guys get plenty of games at your normal schedule. I get home at like 9:00 PST, these are the only games I can actually catch any glimpse of.

QUOTE (Steve9347 @ May 26, 2009 -> 01:59 PM) Josh Fields turns 27 this f***ing year. He's s***. I've played 0 Major League seasons, but guess what, I'm not going to make it. /thread my ass. It's Josh Fields's fault that he was drafted by a team that had a 3b blocking him and couldn't take the position 2 years ago.

QUOTE (Cknolls @ May 26, 2009 -> 12:15 PM) Why has ACORN been hired by the pro gay marriage crowd? You guys really are obsessed with them aren't you?

QUOTE (lostfan @ May 26, 2009 -> 10:13 AM) So the court upheld Prop 8 after all - as dumb as I think Prop 8 was, I actually agree with the ruling. If the people voted, and effectively changed the state's constitution, how could you say it was unconstitutional? It's there to stay, unfortunately. edit: And the gay couples who were married before while it was legal are grandfathered, their marriages aren't nullified. It's not going to be there to stay for long, frankly.

I'm sure everyone saved a ton of money though.

The appellate court judge who ruled against the MLB owners and helped bring an end to the strike of 1995? Sonia Sotomayer.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ May 26, 2009 -> 09:07 AM) And the billions of people within range of their balastic nuclear missiles be damned. Nope. I don't buy that the UN should be purposefully lying to the world. I really believe that when you start to blur that line, it is when you open yourself up for being no better than the countries you are trying to stop from destroying each other. Look no further than the oil for food program. I am sure they had a great reason for that little white lie, but it does no good for the people murdered in Iraq by the enabling of Hussein for decades. Iraq is a wonderful counter-example here...because while "Containment" may have been a poor policy there...look at what the alternative got us.

QUOTE (chw42 @ May 26, 2009 -> 08:51 AM) Bedard rarely pitches more than 6 innings and asks for Barry Zito money. I'd say no way. What a pitcher asks for is not necessarily equal to what a pitcher gets. If someone offers him stupid money (5/$75 or something like that) then not a chance. It's an open question where the market will be, even for left handed starting pitching, this offseason.
