Rumsfeld Quoted Bible on War Briefings
Balta1701 replied to HuskyCaucasian's topic in The Filibuster
QUOTE (kapkomet @ May 18, 2009 -> 03:20 PM) My cousin has spent time with Rumsfeld. Based on her account, my short answer: yes. And not to create this illusion of a "crusade" that some of you want to paint it as. Interesting. Never got that impression from him, but in this case I'll defer. -
I made this point a few pages ago and people didn't seem to know where I was coming from...that John Roberts has been basically as far to the right as any justice on the court, maybe more so than even Scalia. The New Yorker runs an 8 page profile of him saying teh same thing and backing it up with far more info than I know as a passive observer.

Rumsfeld Quoted Bible on War Briefings

QUOTE (kapkomet @ May 18, 2009 -> 02:56 PM) Some days, your biases and drivel are just over the top Kaperbole ... Was it your impression that Donald Rumsfeld was a born-again Christian of the sort who would be quoting various Bible verses at length? -
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ May 18, 2009 -> 01:48 PM) Who has left the Sox and gone on to become a better hitter elsewhere? It may be the players and not the coach. I'm sure it is. I don't know Greg Walker, but how does he get slammed for a guy hitting .230 and Cooper gets no grief for Floyd's 7.71 ERA and inability to hold a runner on? Well, Rowand did for a while it seemed. Willie Harris had some hot streaks after he left.

James Harrison on his refusal to attend the Super Bowl Parade... "This is silly. If you want to throw a parade for us, why not just throw it, why wait until after we win the Super Bowl. You can hold a parade any day." Oh, wait.

Be nice if Anderson could get a couple solid hits tonight. Is a lefty or a righty on the mound facing Charlotte?

Rumsfeld Quoted Bible on War Briefings
Balta1701 replied to HuskyCaucasian's topic in The Filibuster
QUOTE (Texsox @ May 18, 2009 -> 12:58 PM) The previous post made it seem as if Rumssssfeld single handily did it based on his faith. And of course it was Rumsfeld's quotes from the Bible that had everyone lined up perfectly behind him. Once that Christian endorsement from the government was shown, Congress and everyone else just lined up like hogs to slaughter. I think people are giving just a little too much credit for this. Was anyone actually under the impression that Rumsfeld was a big time Christian believer type guy? Or big time religious? He certainly never struck me as such. I read those more as Rumsfeld's folks thinking..."We need to keep the President on our side and not listening to idiots like that Powell...how can we do that...Bible quotes! Remind him that God is on our side and he'll be more likely to listen to us even if things go badly!" -

And Alexei just kept the bat firmly on his shoulders for 6 pitches? What in the world is going on today? -

Someone want to give me the summary of what happened on Rios's triple? -

Did Dotel just throw one behind Rios? That's where Gameday put it. -

Interesting stat...coming in to today the Sox had the 4th worst BABIP in baseball. Only teams worse are San Diego, Arizona, and Oakland. Sox are at .284. That says something. I'm not sure what it says yet. -

QUOTE (Cali @ May 18, 2009 -> 12:00 PM) Meh, I don't really believe that. Especially in Beckham's case. I don't think there is proof either way that they'll be screwed up or succeed. But at this point I'd rather take my chances with younger more athletic guys, than this crop of bulls*** starting every day right now. I can't take much more of this, I really can't... Viciedo is just starting to get some hits. He's got a nearly 10/1 k/BB ratio, and his average is just starting to go up as he's learning how to use his power more. Beckham's not only been in a slump lately but he's been injured. He's working through his first little skid in the big leagues. Now's not the time to promote them. -

QUOTE (ChiSox_Sonix @ May 18, 2009 -> 12:00 PM) Knowing how hard it will be to score again, at the very least it takes Clayton off the hook for the loss Shame they couldn't give him a chance at the win. -

QUOTE (Cali @ May 18, 2009 -> 11:50 AM) I really don't see how this team would be any worse with Viciedo/Beckham playing everyday within the next month or so... Viciedo and Beckham are simply not ready to come up. They're just not. I don't know how I can make it any simpler than that. You're going to screw them up for years if you do. -

All right. While I was at the Gym, Richard put together a quality start, and the team got 5 hits, including balls from Getz, Alexei, and Nix. And no strikeouts for Fields, how about that. Sure, we're getting shut out, but at least we're not getting no-hit and blown out. I'll take it. -
QUOTE (kyyle23 @ May 18, 2009 -> 09:57 AM) Harrison must not understand that the Superbowl champion team is invited to the White House the following year. Not just anyone Except for Chicago teams.

You make him sound a lot like Aaron Poreda.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ May 18, 2009 -> 09:26 AM) Usually, your best hitter is in the 3 hole. Seriously, where's our Andy Sonnanstine? -
QUOTE (kapkomet @ May 18, 2009 -> 09:24 AM) Don't worry, he'll get his. He's already gotten it. A couple million a year is more than enough for most people. Unless you're a U.S. CEO.

QUOTE (Flash Tizzle @ May 17, 2009 -> 02:21 AM) Has anyone ever thought of the idea of proportion in the universe? I don't know, but I've never heard anyone even humor the idea that aliens visiting from far reaches of the universe are hundreds of times larger than we are. Do we just assume that because laws of physics are consistent across the universe that extraterrestrial beings would be similarly portioned to us? Couldn't they be far larger, or maybe smaller? What you should actually think about this statement is that there is a reason why a Polar bear is huge and why humans are roughly 1.5 meters to 2 meters tall and why that species of "Hobbit" humans was found on an island in the middle of Indonesia, IIRC. The size of species in fact directly relates to selective pressures on its development...which directly relates to the physical laws governing the universe. Typically, when you put a species on a small, tropical island, it shrinks. Even happens to humans. If you limit its supply of nutritients, and at the same time put it in a warm environment such that big bodies are disadvantaged, there's a strong selective pressure to shrink. Conversely, if you put a species in a very cold environment, there's going to be a selective pressure to build up a very big, fat-lined body, because thermal diffusion is proportional to surface area, and the bigger your body is, the lower your surface area to volume ratio is, thus the less heat you will lose. If you evolve a multicellular species on a highly geologically active world but beneath an ice ocean, you may well get some interesting results. Ditto if you develop on a hotter planet. Roughly speaking though it's difficult to imagine going more than an order of magnitude each direction, but hey, life does some crazy stuff.

QUOTE (kapkomet @ May 18, 2009 -> 07:30 AM) I will say this. The CEO of Fiat is brilliant. He gets the most lucrative parts of GM and Chrysler at no cost (if you believe the rumours floating around that GM is going to sell off China and Latin America portfolios to Fiat as well) - and actually gets funded by OUR government to take these assets over. This man will come out of this smelling like a rose. And he makes something like 1/100th of what the guys at AIG, BofA, Merrill Lynch et al. made while running those companies in to the ground.

The good news for Orlando is that they actually were 2-1 against Cleveland this season. They absolutely are a good matchup against them, especially if Howard learned a thing or two about being a prime time player from the repeated call-outs against the Celtics. He can really cause trouble for the Cavs if he goes at it hard on offense and makes it hard for Lebron to get in the paint on D. The bad news for Orlando is that Cleveland has the home court and referee advantages, and that's going to be nearly impossible to overcome. It'd be nice if Orlando could push it to 7.
