  1. QUOTE (DrunkBomber @ Apr 13, 2009 -> 10:26 AM) Im shocked Jay Cutler didnt run away with this one. Probably was done before the trade. And I'd expect that we're about a year away from MB moving back to #3, passed by Cutler and Rose.
  2. QUOTE (daa84 @ Apr 13, 2009 -> 10:25 AM) goddamnit....we had miner throwing a ton of pitches (and the middle RF in detroit is terrible) and then 3 outs in a span of 2 pitches It's Zach Miner. Do we really care if we knock him out early?
  3. QUOTE (kapkomet @ Apr 13, 2009 -> 10:19 AM) Like most of you, I do think it's a pointless exercise to continue the embargo, but I can hardly wait to see all of the Cuba defeats US crap. I'm more than willing to tolerate that in exchange for the dramatic cut to the price of sugar that will come with the ending of the embargo, and thus hopefully the return of real sugar to soft drinks. That's all I want.
  4. QUOTE (kapkomet @ Apr 13, 2009 -> 10:15 AM) I would think that the only appeal would be to the US Supreme court. I can't possibly see where they would have grounds to take this to federal court... (I didn't read the article, so I don't know how they have the grounds to do that.) But you're missing the real beauty of this case...the law isn't exactly clear on whether or not the federal system will have adequate jurisdiction, so new law will have to be made defining who has jurisdiction in this case. Which means that the first challenge, taking up the next year, will be an appellate court and the U.S. Supreme Court taking up the issue of whether or not they have jurisdiction to order the seating of the Senator. Then, once jurisdiction has been decided, another year will be taken up by having an appellate court followed by the Supreme Court actually decide on whether or not to order the Governor to provide his signature to endorse the results. While this isn't good for minnesota, the fact that the law is unclear gives the Republicans all that extra time where they can keep the Dems from having that extra Senator just by paying Coleman's legal fees so that he keeps up the fight.
  5. QUOTE (kapkomet @ Apr 13, 2009 -> 10:17 AM) Huh? They already do, don't they? So does Canada and the Caribbean nations. And Europe.
  6. Jermaine Dye will hit #301 tomorrow, because that's how he rolls.
  7. QUOTE (lostfan @ Apr 13, 2009 -> 10:14 AM) I favored some sort of military tribunal system but I think the SCOTUS shot that down. The SCOTUS has shot down the Bush Administration's travishamockery of military tribunals, where evidence obtained under torture was allowed, where there was no appeal, where the government got to play both judge and prosecutor, where 95% of the evidence was withheld from the defense, etc. They have not shut down the military court system. The issue currently is that the military court system has no jurisdiction here unless it is given jurisdiction by Congress.
  8. QUOTE (kapkomet @ Apr 13, 2009 -> 10:08 AM) Seriously, what I do think is that these guys do have a right to a trial. I do think that they have a right to be brought up on charges or let go. I do NOT think that they should be tried in a US courts and have rights that a US citizen would have. And they are different. Here's the actual question then...what body has the authority to try the survivor? Somalia itself doesn't even have a court system, they haven't had a government in 20 years. Current law is essentially out of date because no one has had to deal with pirates as a major problem in such a long time. Current extant law would have exactly what you don't want; pirates captured by a country would be tried by the country that captured them or that they had attacked. In this case, they'd attacked a U.S. flagged ship, were captured/killed by the U.S., so the only option currently in the law would be for the U.S. to try them. Unless, of course, the U.S. were to acknowledge the legitimacy of an international body, like the International Criminal Court. Which is of course what I'd prefer, but the U.S. has refused to participate in that court because of the fact that it could someday try U.S. citizens for things like ordering or committing torture and other war crimes.
  9. QUOTE (shipps @ Apr 13, 2009 -> 10:06 AM) That is f***ing retarded Not at this time of year in Detroit. It's entirely a weather move.
  10. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Apr 13, 2009 -> 09:46 AM) Although one through five are filthy. Their #7 hitter is on a roll lately and always, always, always kills us.
  11. Gavin, I say take those cats, skin them. Use their fur to keep hundreds warm.
  12. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Apr 13, 2009 -> 09:18 AM) Thome doesn't seem to have his number. Career splits don't matter, all that matters is which side of the plate you hit from.
  13. QUOTE (lostfan @ Apr 13, 2009 -> 09:01 AM) In fact I sort of wonder what's been taking him so long. A number of issues. First and foremost, the Republicans have the ability to filibuster any attempt to seat Senator Franken, so if he's going to push it, he better be on firm ground. Second, the Minnesota State Supreme Court has yet to rule, which would sort of give him some nearly iron clad defense of pushing it. Third, the Dems are trying to break about a dozen Republican Filibusters, and right now they simply put economic bills as a higher priority than seating Franken. And Reid sort of blew his own horn early by trying to not seat Senator Burris without all of the appropriate signatures from the state level, because in Minnesota, one of the signatures required is that of the governor, Tim Pawlenty, who just happens to be one of the folks you can expect to be on the Republican 2012 nomination list, and thus who has plenty of motivation to deny that signature until it's forced upon him by Federal Marshalls or something. The Republicans have every reason to drag this out as long as they can to deny the Dems an extra Senator. You can argue whether or not they should be doing so, but tactically, the longer they drag this out, the better it is for them because it will take 2 Republican votes to break a filibuster instead of 1. I believe it was Senator Cornyn, head of the Republican Senate Campaign Committee who said that it could take "Years" to resolve.
  14. QUOTE (Cknolls @ Apr 13, 2009 -> 07:35 AM) Oh wait we just did that....well raise them again.... If you don't count the largest single tax decrease in history, sure. Did that cigarette tax increase hit you personally?
  15. QUOTE (T R U @ Apr 12, 2009 -> 02:27 PM) They couldn't do something to the Polar Bear cuz of this could they? They didn't do anything wrong, that dumbass jumped in there on her own power. You have to kill it. It now knows the taste of the sweetest of all meats. It will never be able to sate its hunger agai.
  16. QUOTE (FedEx227 @ Apr 12, 2009 -> 06:04 PM) I have no doubt that they'll beat either Boston or Cleveland at home in a game 4, that I absolutely believe. Game 6? Eeeh... I don't know about that, but it wouldnt be out of the realm of possibility, especially against Boston. Boston isn't particularly fond of playing on the road in the playoffs and if Garnett isn't 100%, you're all but guaranteed a game 5. Right now the Bulls are playing better than their record and they can actually give teams matchup problems with their athleticism, which they're finally using on occasion. Last time the Bulls played the cavs, for example, Truehoop anointed TT as one of the few guys who actually annoyed Lebron on defense this year.
  17. QUOTE (mr_genius @ Apr 12, 2009 -> 02:38 PM) sounds like a violation of the pirates civil rights. should we form a protest group? Can we get some more intelligent Obama haters around here please? "Three of the pirates are dead and their hostage was freed unharmed" "Great! This is terrible news for the Democrats!" "Um, where did you get that from? They say Obama may well have authorized the military response." "Woo-woo, go W, I'm going teabagging, cut my taxes more!"
  18. QUOTE (fathom @ Apr 12, 2009 -> 01:04 PM) What happened? Beckett threw a ball at abreu's head after abreu called time mid-pitch, Hunter went after an ump& looked like he shoved him. No huge punches yet, but the angels are clearly on edge right now.
  19. Some repeated bench-emptying in Anaheim. Hunter probably has a suspension coming.
  20. QUOTE (chw42 @ Apr 11, 2009 -> 04:10 PM) Alexei with two hits. Quentin had two hits. Corky freakin' Miller had two hits. Bartolo pitched well with the aid of his high-80s fastball. Most people said Bartolo was low 90's for at least a chunk of the day, Farmer said he topped out at 93.
  21. QUOTE (WCSox @ Apr 11, 2009 -> 04:02 PM) Ditto. Welcome back offense, as well. His name is Q and he'd prefer you to refer to him by some version of that.
  22. Good win with the crazy all right sunday lineup. Do like giving Konerko and Thome extra rest. Welcome back Bartolo.
  23. QUOTE (scenario @ Apr 11, 2009 -> 03:38 PM) Lebron James is the Pujols of basketball. Pujols has a ring.
