  1. QUOTE (Jimbo's Drinker @ Jul 30, 2008 -> 05:35 PM) Why do people keep talkingabout Floyd being traded? Because we don't exactly have a lot of assets to deal right now that other teams would be interested in. The Sox aren't getting a big name without moving one of Danks, Floyd, and Quentin.
  2. 32 pitches through 2 for Gavin. Not terrible, but not great.
  3. QUOTE (Wanne @ Jul 30, 2008 -> 04:01 PM) Why the hell do they boo AJ?....not like he left them. Because of that crappy return they got on the trade for him.
  4. QUOTE (Swishin' Aint Easy @ Jul 30, 2008 -> 03:57 PM) Never has one who contributed so little not been removed from the lineup. Chris Young says hi.
  5. QUOTE (lostfan @ Jul 30, 2008 -> 03:03 PM) If you want your balance then how about trading for a player that can score consistently via something other than a jump shot. Hopefully...we have that player already, and his name is Derrick. His job is to become a guy who consistently creates open shots for other people on the team. That's what makes CP3 and DW so effective...they get theirs, but they create opportunities for everyone else as well.
  6. QUOTE (whitesoxfan101 @ Jul 30, 2008 -> 01:57 PM) An average reliever instead of two draft picks? I guess I was wrong to think teams now do realize how valuable those type a picks are. They must really think Farnsworth can help fix their bullpen (I doubt that) or that Pudge is some sort of clubhouse cancer to do this. Would the Tigers have offered Pudge arbitration with the $12.4 million he's making this year? They already had to think for a while about picking up his option year this year. Would Rodriguez have turned down arbitration? I can't imagine him making close to that amount of money next year wherever he signs.
  7. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Jul 30, 2008 -> 02:15 PM) Hughes can drop 35 on a team any given night, and will actually play very good defense. Gordon is gone, and for good reason. Actually, I disagree on the "Very" there. Hughes is one of those opportunistic defenders, where a decent amount of time he'll make a big play like a steal or a turnover happen for you, but an equal portion of the time he'll get himself out of position or something along those lines and that'll wind up leading to points. I mean, even when he was with Washington, you never exactly thought that they were going to be shutting anyone down on another team even if Hughes was guarding their best scorer. He's a couple steps above Gordon on defense certainly, but if I want a shutdown defender out of the guys we have give me either Thabo or Kirk.
  8. QUOTE (Leonard Zelig @ Jul 29, 2008 -> 10:55 PM) Couldn't have anything to do with the pitching. And the pitching couldn't have anything that feeds back related to the performance of the defense or the way the game has shaped up?
  9. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jul 30, 2008 -> 01:48 PM) A hateable player going to the ultimate hateable team. Works out nicely. But I am kind of surprised the Tigers did this. I know they need pen help, but, I don't see Inge being an upgrade offensively. More of a downgrade, IMO. Trading I-Roid is almost a white flag move, except they got an old, mediocre reliver in return. Weird. Not when you take salaries in to account.
  10. You know what I find interesting about this discussion? For years, hell for as long as I can remember, people have been basically mourning how apathetic voters were in this country. We had barely 50% of the country showing up to vote. People felt like their votes don't make a difference. People were turned off by negative campaigning and stayed home. So many other democracies were working so much better than us. Country x has an 85% voter turnout rate, country y has a 90% voter turnout rate, we practically developed democracy and we can't even get people to turn out. On and on, op-ed piece, editorial, whatever. Now, one side puts out a candidate that people are genuinely excited about. There's a flood of new voter registrations. The supposedly apathetic young people are working in record numbers and at least in the primaries were turning out in record numbers. There's an air of excitement around this election that I haven't seen in my lifetime. People genuinely want to talk politics, people who debated in October of 2003 never bothering to vote again are actually excited about maybe having a chance in the next 4 years to fix some of these messes the last disaster has made. And after all those statements about how bad it was for this country to barely get people coming to the polls, when we finally get a measure of excitement, especially amongst the younger folks (Hiya!), we're told how scary it is, how bad it's making our candidate look, how we should just calm down, how we're just embarrassing ourselves, how we're driving away voters because we're working too hard. Take your pick. Either enjoy the crap we've put up with in the White House for what, 20 years now, because good people found enough to hate about the process that they didn't turn out and vote, or enjoy having something a little better because people got back involved and tried to make a difference.
  11. QUOTE (Texsox @ Jul 30, 2008 -> 12:36 PM) Seems like there have been other studies. IIRC weren't there a lot of studies that showed how wonderful tobacco was? It wouldn't surprise me if there were. But that's not a reason to throw out the data we currently have. Like any supposedly scientifically done study, if we threw out every bit of research because people had done things wrong in the past we'd never have gotten past Newton. Is this man funded by the "Marijuana industry" or did he clearly do something wrong? Beats me. He admits to being a user, so he has motivation to work on that side, but you can't just toss data aside without giving me some sort of reason.
  12. QUOTE (lostfan @ Jul 30, 2008 -> 12:39 PM) Being at work I'm theoretically too busy to google that I just figured I was the only one who wasn't high on something...
  13. QUOTE (Whitewashed in '05 @ Jul 30, 2008 -> 12:36 PM) Don't the Yanks need their RP's? Funny to see Kyle back in Detroit. Sox have had success against him IIRC. His ERA isn't bad, but he's sporting a 1.35 WHIP this season, so you have to wonder if he's been being bailed out by a couple other people in that pen.
  14. By the way folks, it's really not that hard to google "Marijuana cancer link" and see what comes up. Clearly it's not a conclusive, double-blind study or anything along those lines, but if we're going to discuss whether or not smoking marijuana causes cancer, let's at least look at the data currently available, which says it doesn't.
  15. QUOTE (lostfan @ Jul 30, 2008 -> 09:56 AM) What's Scott Skiles doing these days? Coaching the Bucks?
  16. QUOTE (DBAH0 @ Jul 30, 2008 -> 09:44 AM) Don't know if Miller would be the best fit for the Bulls, as he's pretty soft defensively and pretty injury prone. For that deal though, I think they have to pull the trigger. Frankly, I have no problem with Miller for either of those reasons...because both of them would lead to him being a reasonable guy to sit on the bench and think about how his contract expires while Noah and Tyrus are out getting minutes.
  17. Since we heard about that $300 haircut so often, I'm left wondering...if John Edwards were caught wearing $520 Italian shoes, how often would we have heard about it?
  18. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jul 30, 2008 -> 08:41 AM) That said, I am really surprised how little discussion Richardson got for the job. To me, he fit the right pegs that Obama was missing, better than anyone else mentioned. I think Richardson's problem was in the vetting process honestly...and he probably knew that.
  19. QUOTE (Jenks Heat @ Jul 30, 2008 -> 09:04 AM) Am I stupid for thinking he has more value than Poreda? Richard was a dual sport athlete until recently and while he is no Jeff Samardjia (sp?) I really liked what I saw in him. Richard turns 25 in about a month. Poreda turns 22 in October. Performance in the big leagues and the way he looked aren't going to factor in to how teams look at "Value" when they're looking at high level minor leaguers. Poreda was a first rounder with an electric fastball who is 3 years younger than Richard and will be 1 level behind him at the start of next year. Poreda has significantly more "Trade value" than Richard. But we all can come up with a couple dozen examples off the top of our heads of pitchers with the highest trade value busting while pitchers with less value wind up tearing up the league...so it's entirely possible Richard might turn out to be a much more successful and valuable pitcher to us.
  20. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 30, 2008 -> 05:22 AM) So in a quake that leads to the larger quake, is it something where the initial release of pressure ends up building more pressure at another point, which leads to a bigger quake? Yeah, that is a possible set of consequences of any quake. Even a small quake shifts the stress field around it. If another fault line in the area was already sressed near its breaking point, then that small amount of additional stress, suddenly added, can be enough to make it go. After about 24 hours there's a 1% or less chance of that happening.
  21. QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Jul 30, 2008 -> 06:02 AM) Should I be concerned if I have my mortgage through them? I presume it'd just be "sold off" to whatever new bank arrises... More than likely, I'd imagine it was already sold off to someone else anyway.
  22. QUOTE (Texsox @ Jul 30, 2008 -> 07:40 AM) Funny we don't seem to mind these "illegal aliens". Taking American jobs....
  23. QUOTE (lostfan @ Jul 30, 2008 -> 03:53 AM) Pax almost HAS to make a trade. I'd remove the "Almost". He literally has to make a trade. There's just not enough minutes for the guys he has right now. Even if all he does is dump guys off for expiring contracts, he has to do something. He has 2 PF's who could be 35 minutes a game guys, 2 SF's who could be 35 minutes a game guys, 1 C, 2 PG's (One of whom is a #1 draft pick and 1 of whom has a $11 mil a year contract) both of whom should be 40 minutes a game guys, and 3 SG's who could be 30 minutes a game + guys. And out of that, he has 5 or 6 guys who are young enough that they need to play minutes to develop, but only 1 contract that expires this year and 1 contract that expires in 2010.
