  1. Josh Beckett missing another start tonight.
  2. QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ Apr 22, 2008 -> 02:50 PM) FYI: Looks like Drudge and CNN might be working with different numbers. Drudge has Obama with 53% of men, but CNN has CLinton with 55%. The CNN article I'm reading has Clinton wiht 55% of "White males", not just males.
  3. On the other hand, the contact of one of the guys at the National Review has it 52 Obama 47 Clinton. FWIW. Who knows at this point.
  4. QUOTE (SoxFan562004 @ Apr 22, 2008 -> 01:39 PM) that Clinton internal had a link though, this doesn't, which makes me question it a ton. Also, there's always the possibility, even if these are legit, the first areas reporting have some Obama strongholds in them. Usually, there's no way to link exit poll data until after the tally is over, because the people who take it don't want their polling data to affect the results. But in almost all cases they do pass them on to the media and campaigns as they're being collected, so usually the exit poll leaks have some measure of reliability. Also, it really shouldn't matter which areas report first to an exit poll. It should be taken across the state and compiled as the day goes on. What would matter is if there's a selection in the time of day particular people vote, i.e. older people going during the day while working, younger people going after 5, etc, or whatever. Edit: Here's a huffington post link if you want other people on the record with those numbers.
  5. QUOTE (SoxFan562004 @ Apr 22, 2008 -> 01:32 PM) http://www.drudgereport.com/ the headline is "5pm (et) exit Poll 52 Clinton 48 Obama" no source or anything, but first numbers I've seen. It's been my impression that the exit polling has been pro-Obama more often than not, has anyone else gotten that impression? Anyway, I'd be happy with anything in single digits.
  6. How might the candidates look after 4 years in office?
  7. QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Apr 22, 2008 -> 01:14 PM) When did Mota and Turnbow get caught? Mota got a 50 game suspension to start 07. Turnbow tested positive back when trying out for the US Olympic team about 5 years ago, and thus USADA was the one doing the tests there.
  8. QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ Apr 22, 2008 -> 01:09 PM) Unknown Authenticity, but... Obama not on some ballots? At this point, I certainly don't see any reason why we should panic about this. It's an election, it's a complicated thing, especially for the companies building the voting machines. It'd be nice if it was error-free, but there were bound to be a few that cropped up here or there. Show me something that suggests a few tens of thousands of people might have had their votes screwed with, or don't bother. "Some voters" doesn't cut it.
  9. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Apr 22, 2008 -> 12:50 PM) By solar water heaters, do you mean the ones where you run the pipe on the roof with heat-soaking coating on it? Or something else? Also, one thing that is said to work pretty darn well now are those no-tank water heaters. Just uses electricity to heat the water as it heads to the location in the pipes. Yeah, what you describe. Those have been around since what, the 70's energy crisis, they work pretty well, and I think its fairly silly that more people haven't used them over the past decade or so (that's where a government subsidy check would have worked really nice!)
  10. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Apr 22, 2008 -> 12:34 PM) Oh absolutely. For those though, its simpler a lot of the time - when its time to replace the waterheater/furnace/roofing/windows, we'll be going with the most efficient available, as long as the cost difference isn't so astronimically out of whack that we'd never see the benefit. I brought up solar cells as an example because its a much bigger deal, with a bigger up front investment, and until recently the math just didn't work very well for them in most circumstances. For photovoltaics I think you're right, but even then, I think that solar water heaters have been around and working for quite some time and IIRC are pretty darn cost effective in the long run.
  11. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Apr 22, 2008 -> 12:15 PM) Its funny because I about puked when I saw Hillary talking about moving the country off of crude oil dependacy, like there was some huge policy movement under President Clinton that did something effective. Its not really up to the President, unless that person taxes or subsidizes a particular type of energy to the point it that moves people to better alternatives. that didn't happen under President Clinton. People make those kind of switches because of prices, not because the President tells them to do so. I'll still say that both of the last 2 presidents have really missed opportunities to effectively do something in this area by failing to do as you suggest, adding some subsidies for wind/solar while cutting subsidies for oil, or perhaps more importantly, failed to genuinely put enough federal dollars in to developing the technology in order to get ahead of the curve while energy was still fairly cheap.
  12. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Apr 22, 2008 -> 09:27 AM) Agree. SS2K5 and I, along with others, have been saying that for a while. It sucks for now, but it will probably be a benefit in the long run. Higher prices for gas, as well as the electric and gas bills at home, will make more people look at alternatives. For example, the combination of high electricity prices and now much more efficient PV solar cells mean that they may now be much more practical for people's homes. Same goes for cars - people will buy more fuel efficient vehicles now. Some of you may recall, I posted a thread in here a while back laying out the math for buying a hybrid, which I then did. Well, we're probably buying a house this year, and after I do so, I'll be doing the same math for solar cells for the house. Stay tuned. It's probably also worth keeping in mind a couple other things...first, there are a lot of other ways to "Green" up a house coming on the market these days, some of which are better than others. Things like various new types of water heaters, better designs of windows, better building materials, etc, on top of the photovoltaics that are now becoming common.
  13. QUOTE (kapkomet @ Apr 22, 2008 -> 06:44 AM) Keep on fighting, Clintons... it helps the Democrats sink. Well, here's the big question that I don't think any of us can answer...which effect will win out...the fact that there's no Dem nominee yet facing up against McCain, or the fact that when November runs around the Democrats are going to have campaigned in like 47-48 states fairly heavily and turned out and registered millions of new voters?
  14. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Apr 22, 2008 -> 09:05 AM) That's a nice Catch-22. If you're not hitting well, you can't play until you're hitting well. We can call it the "Brian Anderson" rule.
  15. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Apr 22, 2008 -> 04:27 AM) There have been classes of people doing this since the beginning of time. It is nothing new... Then if there's no problem at all with it, why is this even a thread?
  16. QUOTE (Kalapse @ Apr 21, 2008 -> 04:31 PM) One thing that could hurt Frank if he doesn't play another game is the possible hall of fame ballot of 2014. As of right now the 2013 ballot is going to be ridiculous but due to steroid use a few of those guys will likely be on the ballot in 2014 as well. (the players in bold will almost definitely go in on the first ballot) 2013: Sosa, Clemens, Bonds, Piazza, Lofton, Biggio, Wells 2014: Thomas, Glavine?, Maddux?, Pettitte?, Johnson?, Hoffman?, Kent?, Mussina?, Rogers?, Garciaparra? From that list, I don't feel that Andy Pettitte, Kenny Rogers, Nomar Garciaparra, Kenny Lofton, or David Wells have the numbers. And then there's the juiced ones.
  17. QUOTE (Greg The Bull Luzinski @ Apr 21, 2008 -> 04:36 PM) 2006 was a great year, but my standard is Manny. Beltran makes Manny money and hits .270. He is good but not worth the money nor has he proven he is one of the top ten players in baseball based of performance in my opinion. At least not compared to the expectations after his half season with the Astros where he carried the team. Dude, Beltran received Manny money what, 5 years after Manny did?
  18. Seriously, how often do I get to link to a George Will column?
  19. QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ Apr 21, 2008 -> 01:38 PM) I just took a closer look at the Public Policy Polling numbers that came out today that have Obama +3 in PA. They surveyed 2300+ voters in a RoboCall. In TX, OH, and WI their survey compared to the actual results was within the margin of error. Take into consideration that this survey is TWICE the size of the second largest poll and nearly 3.5 times the average sample size, the numbers are very interesting. The part I like about the poll is that they pressed undecideds to make a choice. Basically, if they answered undecided, they were asked who they were leaning towards. In the end only 5% were truly undecided. I would recommend this post over @ the great orange Satan's site if you want to try to get a better understanding of how the internals of these polls are breaking down to give each of these sets of results. It's not just the total number, it's the total number from each demographic balanced against the others that matters.
  20. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Apr 21, 2008 -> 12:27 PM) People really worry too much about what other people think... that is the only reason you would spend $10k on a kids birthday party. If you had that kind of money where you could just drop $10 grand on a kid's birthday party and not have to give it a 2nd thought, what's wrong with it? If people are going to have a problem with this, my response will be that the problem is not how the people are choosing to spend their money, it's that income distributions in this country have just gotten so out of whack in the last decade or so that there are more and more people able to throw around this kind of cash while at the same time median incomes in this country haven't increased in a decade.
  21. QUOTE (Hawkfan @ Apr 21, 2008 -> 12:18 PM) I'm not sure, but i think historically, May has been Paulie's worst month for hitting. So we'll see how long his 171 avg will hold off from "killing" our team. I don't think hes killing our team, but weakly hit ground balls to the short stop drive me insane, and my mental state is much more important. 22. QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Apr 21, 2008 -> 11:54 AM) Just want to point out that Furcal did have a bad year but he is an absolute stud and if he keeps going at the rate he's doing this year he'll be in line for a nice fat, longer term deal. On a sidenote, I would absolutely love to get the draft picks and than give one of those picks right back for signing Furcal (if the money was right). I say that because Furcal is a better long term move than OC. Again though, at the rate he's going any team in need of a SS will be willing to throw a good deal of cash his way. Just based on what we saw in the spring, I'd honestly much rather give Alexei the chance to succeed or fail at that position for a year than sign someone for big money to play that spot. But of course, the only way I want that done is if we play this season with that in mind. In other words, he needs at bats somewhere.
  23. QUOTE (Cknolls @ Apr 21, 2008 -> 10:28 AM) Tripled the price of gas? According to the Energy Information Agency, the average gas price per gallon on April 14th for the U.S., Regular conventional gasoline, was $3.35. The Average price on January 22, 2001 was $1.45. So it has not fully tripled. It has only gone up by a factor of 2.3 over that time.
