QUOTE (CWSGuy406 @ Apr 18, 2008 -> 02:13 PM) This deal is pretty unprecedented, right? The Tulo and C-Young deals are a bit different because at least those guys had one year of service under their belts. Basically, this was $17 million, on top of whatever signing bonus he got when he signed originally, for finishing the Tampa Bay minor league system.

4/18 Gamethread: Sox (9-6) at Rays (7-9); 6:10; CSN

QUOTE (Cowch @ Apr 18, 2008 -> 03:17 PM) Aside from CF Tampa's park is smaller than the Cell. I really think this entire series may be a slug fest. A couple guys named Vazquez, Danks, and Buehrle might have something to say about that. -
QUOTE (iamshack @ Apr 18, 2008 -> 03:46 PM) As for Jerry, I'm not sure he is actually capable of "raking." JO put up a .331 average with a .393 OBP in 2005 in AA Birmingham. It took him some time to adapt to AAA, his average never reached that point, but he got better there and perhaps most importantly showed more patience at the plate as time went on. I could easily see Owens, after putting up a solid 2nd half in the MLB last year, put up a batting average well over .300 in the minors this year if he's healthy and it doesn't interfere with anything. And that would probably push his OBP towards .380+ based on his recent numbers.

QUOTE (farmteam @ Apr 18, 2008 -> 02:09 PM) Ah, thanks for clearing that up. I took a class on Earthquakes last semester, and we went and looked at a fault (Mt. Carmel maybe? Does that sound right?), and it had a dip slip of a foot or so, I think. Is that a lot, or no? I may very well have taken a field trip in structural geology to the same fault. I think it's pretty much the only one in Indiana. No, a foot of displacement along a fault is not a lot. Most of the ones that drive even moderately sized earthquakes have displacement on the order of miles overall (because they've broken and moved more than once). Most of the faults that produce these large quakes in that area are fairly deeply buried and don't outcrop well at the surface, even though some of their effects (Hills, changes in dip, etc.) may be.

QUOTE (elrockinMT @ Apr 18, 2008 -> 01:32 PM) That may be entirely possible. Do you think he might even attempt to trade Dye before the season goes much further? Or Konerko too? If this team keeps winning and the biggest need we have is a new 2nd baseman, not a chance.

QUOTE (ChiSox_Sonix @ Apr 18, 2008 -> 01:54 PM) ps. sorry about the language IMO, you're forgiven.

QUOTE (farmteam @ Apr 18, 2008 -> 02:00 PM) Balta, all the quakes here are intraplate earthquakes, right? By definition, yes, since there is no major plate boundary anywhere near you. However, the story is more complicated than that...as especially in continental areas, the simple way to say it is that some plates are less rigid than others. For an alternate example, only 85% or so of the motion between the North American and Pacific plate is taken up by the San Andreas, a good chunk of it is taken up by deformation within the continent stretching a few hundred kilometers inland of the Fault. These would be defined as intraplate earthquakes as well, even if the driving force for them comes from a nearby plate margin.

SI claims that they've identified the guy known as "Max" in Canseco's latest book who Jose claims is ARod's steroid connection, and in their interview with him, he's calling Jose the liar.

This one's going to be fun. The Gallup daily tracking poll: Rasmussen has their Obama lead narrowing today from 7 to 5 Meanwhile, Newsweek was in the field the day of and the day after the Debate, and after their most recent poll in March showed a 1 point Obama lead, Newsweek now shows a 19 point national lead for Obama.

On David Brooks and the whole press corps to some extent, I'll also offer up this Glenn Greenwald blog post. Yes he's biased, yes he's on my side but he's a good writer and I think he is on the correct side here. (Salon sometimes makes you watch a brief ad to get through to their content for free).

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Apr 18, 2008 -> 12:04 PM) Offensively he's been good but he's turning into a butcher in the field. His legs are just too slow now. You could move Thome and DH Dye. Exactly my point. I still say our lineup next year could easily go Swisher, Anderson, Quentin (Owens 4th OF), Fields, Ramirez, Richar, Konerko/Dye/Thome between 1b/DH, AJ behind the plate, and a rotation of Buehrle/Floyd/Vazquez/Danks/???, with Bourgeois on the bench, and we'd have like 80% of our regular starters at their prime age or younger, signed to cheap contracts, getting better, with a few key vets, and more than enough money to spend if we decided to turn those ??? in the rotation in to someone like CC or another pitcher like that. And our defense would be as good as this year or better, our offense could easily stay the same or improve, and our pitching staff is already looking good.

QUOTE (Reddy @ Apr 18, 2008 -> 12:02 PM) John Edwards on the Colbert Report This is effing hilarious. My love is rekindled. I did think of you when that one was on. I say we set up an online donation form through Paypal, one for Clinton fans and one for Obama fans. The first group to 6 jetskis wins.

It's also entirely possible that good performances by Anderson and Owens this year will give KW the motivation to do a salary dump and move either Dye (freeing up RF) or Thome (Freeing up DH) this offseason.

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Apr 18, 2008 -> 12:41 PM) Eventually its going to tear down itself. Daley is trying his hardest to make sure they cant improve it. If I were a Sox fan trying to sabotage that team, that's exactly how I'd do it.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Apr 18, 2008 -> 12:30 PM) Picking out one issue is an easy way to make anyone look the way you want them to look, good or bad. Getting past that and realizing that those are two of the very few pols today who aren't afraid to work the other side of the aisle screams middle ground at me. It's one issue yes, but it's easily the most important national security issue facing this country today, and they both happen to be bat sh*t insane on it. Are you going to argue that the Iraq war, bombing Iran, Bombing Syria, and those sorts of actions aren't that important or are improper things to judge a candidate/campaign on?
-
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Apr 18, 2008 -> 12:27 PM) I'll be honest, I don't read the NYT, just like I don't read a lot of the stuff that I believe is so far out of left field that it isn't worth my time. And in regards to McCain/Leiberman, I will say this much... Is a ticket that really pisses off the wings of both parties that bad of a thing? If the right wingers hate McCain, and the left-wingers hate Leiberman, that kinda leaves the middle ground open. Personally, I just don't think "We haven't bombed nearly enough countries in the Middle East" fits the description of middle ground for this country by anyone's imagination except Brooks, McCain, and Lieberman.

Why not stick this here.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Apr 18, 2008 -> 10:33 AM) This from the last place I ever expected to see Obama get lit up in... The New York Times. http://www.nytimes.com/2008/04/18/opinion/...amp;oref=slogin Just out of curiosity, how much do you know about David Brooks? Senior editor at the highly conservative "Weekly Standard", Writer for the WSJ and Washington Times, strongly in favor of the Iraq war, wrote in 2006 that a McCain/Lieberman ticket would represent the middle ground that the press seems to think America wants. The overall opinion page certainly tilts to the left, but the Op-Ed page gets quite loaded with conservative writers, some good, some barely conscious.

QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ Apr 18, 2008 -> 10:02 AM) New Indiana Poll (SurveyUSA): Obama- 50% Clinton- 45% Recent Polls by SurveyUSA: 03/29 - 03/31.... 530 LV.... Clinton +9.0 04/11 - 04/13.... 571 LV.... Clinton +16.0 04/14 - 04/16.... 578 LV.... Obama +5 (today's poll) Suddenly I believe he's winning that state. And yet, that's a Hell of a swing. Something's just odd about SUSA lately.

QUOTE (DonnyDevito @ Apr 18, 2008 -> 10:30 AM) The Cubs at #2...are you kidding me? Pie is playing like a bust and they are without Soriano. The Cubs don't have near the defense or pitching that the White Sox have right now but to their credit they are one of the best hitting teams in MLB while the White Sox are one of the worst. The Sox are 5th in MLB and 4th in the AL in runs scored. The Cubs are 8th in MLB and 2nd in the NL in runs scored, so you're correct they have a solid offense...but the White Sox are not one of the worst according to any number. The worst team number I can find for them is they're 24th in batting average...but that isn't hurting us all that much in OBP.

QUOTE (DonnyDevito @ Apr 18, 2008 -> 09:24 AM) Ozuna is what, 34 or 35, years old now. I know Ozuna's b-day falls during baseball season so whatever his age is now, you can add a year because he has a b-day coming up later this summer i believe (i could be wrong tho). I have a feeling we saw the best of Ozuna a couple of years ago in '06. He had that serious injury last year and just hasn't looked the same in '08. Ozuna is a good player but I wouldn't mind seeing another player get his roster spot next year. He's listed as turning 34 in August. Isn't this the last year Pablo is under contract? I think a lot of people have mentally penciled in Bourgeois for his role next year.

By the way, it seems the North American plate is not without a sense of history.
