  1. QUOTE(BigSqwert @ Feb 7, 2008 -> 12:11 PM) Apparently the Clinton campaign is holding a press conference to announce a record amount of donations in the last day or 2. Why a press conference? Because her campaign needs press coverage...and Obama raked in like 1.75 times what she raked in.
  2. QUOTE(Rex Kicka** @ Feb 7, 2008 -> 10:40 AM) McCain has more delegates only because of winner take all rules. McCain is winning the nomination by winning states he'll get killed in during the general... like New York, Connecticut, New Jersey. Weird how that works, huh? The interesting thing is...you might well be able to say the same thing about Obama. North Dakota, Idaho, South Carolina, Georgia...
  3. QUOTE(Texsox @ Feb 7, 2008 -> 10:25 AM) I likw it too, which is why it will never happen Because you're voting for McCain.
  4. The Senate Republicans successfully filibustered the Senate version of the Economic stimulus package last night, supposedly because it had the gall to add in about $44 billion or so over 2 years in changes like additional unemployment benefits and help with heating for the poor. There were also a few goodies stuck in to placate a few Republicans at the changes. The interesting thing about it? The final vote was 59-40 (Harry Reid changed his vote so that he could bring it back to the floor later if necessary so it tallied 58-41). Every one of the Presidential Candidates in the Senate returned to Washington for the vote. But, you may be asking...59+40 is 99. Who didn't vote? Was it the guy who had a stroke about a year and a half ago? Was Larry Craig in the bathroom? What happened? Turns out, it was that steely eyed missile man and straight talker, John McCain, who missed the vote. He flew back to Washington for the vote, and didn't vote. Seems he didn't want to risk being able to be tarred by a vote that was remotely controversial in the general election campaign. A true story of courage. One worthy of remembrance.
  5. QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Feb 7, 2008 -> 09:38 AM) I'm not going to speak for Kap, but who pays for this voluntary system? The people who need it, can't afford it. A big part of the problem though is that within a few years...no one will be able to afford it. I'll defer to the Congressional Budget office (non-partisan) on this graph: If we don't reform the system...if we keep the private system we have now...who pays for that mess? 30-40% of GDP by the time I'm looking at retiring.
  6. QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Feb 7, 2008 -> 09:33 AM) Could be. That's not an ignorant thought at all. My guess is he wants to be part of an administration, but continue his work - so he likely wouldn't be a VP. Some sort of non-cabinet post, SubSecEnvironment or something that they'd make up. That's just my guess, though. At least based on his other recent behaviour, my guess is the opposite...that Al has realized there's some value to not being a figure in this campaign, to just sort of being this god-like figure outside of politics that everyone has to pay some level of attention to. Even half the Republicans started saying anthropogenic climate change is real, and he's been a big part of that.
  7. QUOTE(Texsox @ Feb 7, 2008 -> 09:29 AM) Another great example of why hate Hillary, how many other candidates do we judge by their spouses? Fred Thompson. Rudy 9iu11ani, only because he kept interrupting his campaign events to take her calls. Dick Cheney...because one of his wife's children is a lesbian. That's right America, did you hear? She's a lesbian. I told you, lesbian. Hey, Mr. Debate Moderator, did you know that one of Dick Cheney's daughters is a lesbian? John Edwards, perhaps the best other example of this campaign season, because his wife took a very active role in the campaign. And furthermore, an awful lot of pundits took it upon themselves to judge the Edwards family, usually in a poor fashion, because he continued the campaign after the health related announcement they made last year.
  8. QUOTE(Kalapse @ Feb 7, 2008 -> 09:29 AM) Kielty signed a minor league non-guaranteed deal. The only reason they brought him back is because he absolutely rakes against lefties. Unless Brian Anderson is a proven major league veteran with excellent splits against south paws and won't have to take up a spot on the 40 man then there's absolutely no correlation between the two. Take a look at Pawtucket's (Boston's AAA team) roster, they already have a couple Anderson's, they don't need anymore. Acquiring Anderson, Haeger and Sisco/Masset would only force Boston to wast 3 spot on their 40 man roster on crap, it wouldn't make their team any better. And since all of them are low on/out of options, they'd be either forced to put them on their 25 man roster next year or they'd have given up Crisp for nothing.
  9. QUOTE(WHITESOXRANDY @ Feb 7, 2008 -> 09:00 AM) Anderson, Haeger and Sisco/Masset for Crisp. The Sox would be much better for 2008. Wakefield could help Haeger become his replacement. Crisp is young. Crisp can hit and hit from both sides. He can play all 3 OF positions and has a good arm and he can run and he's not too expensive. Why would the Red Sox want either Anderson or Sisco/Masset? They have more than enough young relievers and they're trying to trade Crisp because they don't have room for another CF as it is.
  10. QUOTE(kyyle23 @ Feb 7, 2008 -> 09:03 AM) And at the same time, i dont know why McNamee would have all of this evidence without him planning to turn on Clemens at sometime in the future. this evidence would be what, 10+ years old? 10 years ago McNamee was telling himself he should keep steroid-used needles? Why wouldnt he destroy that stuff if he was in on it? If I was helping a friend break the law, this is exactly what I'd do. I'd stash some of the evidence away somewhere just in case, because I wouldn't want to be the one caught without a chair when the music stopped.

QUOTE(StrangeSox @ Feb 7, 2008 -> 05:49 AM) My father is a trained accountant, so I just have him do it. Ditto.
  12. Joe Lieberman has been stripped of his superdelegate status for endorsing the opposing party's candidate.
  13. QUOTE(witesoxfan @ Feb 7, 2008 -> 08:51 AM) Absolutely...probably the most important one of the decade. Well, considering how long it's been since this team has drafted in the top 10, I don't think anyone could seriously disagree with that. When was the last time this team had a top 10 pick before this year?
  14. QUOTE(kyyle23 @ Feb 7, 2008 -> 08:28 AM) This is what ia m thinking. The evidence is going to be disputed as manufactured eveidence, how do you disprove that McNamee didnt add some sort of Clemens DNA/Blood to a syringe of HGH or steroids, or if it is in fact a true piece of evidence that Clemens used steroids? Can you come up with another reason why McNamee would have a sample of Clemens's blood? And I'll bet you it's quite difficult to fake the pattern of blood you get on a used needle without actually injecting someone.
  15. $5.7 million in the last 24 hours for Obama.
  16. QUOTE(iamshack @ Feb 6, 2008 -> 07:32 PM) This is really shocking to me...is it because of the demographics involved? Hilary has the older generations and Barack the younger generations that he is able to raise so much more money? I think a big, big part of it is the excitement that BO seems to generate. It sounds silly but it seems to be true...these huge crowds he is generating actually seem to count for something.
  17. QUOTE(DrunkBomber @ Feb 6, 2008 -> 06:19 PM) I agree that its mostly because of their careers and it kind of makes it worse for me. You know? This kind of bothers me, because I for one have no way of getting in to their heads, so I honestly don't think this is any more than guesswork. Not only are we trying to guess her motivation without knowing her, we're trying to guess her motivation based on the persona that gets presented of her through the media. So I think it's really difficult to guess a person's motivation. You may believe that, but without knowing the person, I just feel like it's hard to say that with confidence.
  18. The Obama campaign has raised $5 million since the polls closed last night. It's probably worth wondering why the Clinton campaign can't do that.
  19. QUOTE(BigSqwert @ Feb 6, 2008 -> 01:05 PM) Hillary becoming the Romney of the Democratic campaign. She is not finding new people to join her campaign. She's running out of money. She can't get disenfranchised Republicans to vote for her. And Independents flock to Obama in much higher numbers. On this issue, I think the Clintons are correct.
  20. QUOTE(Texsox @ Feb 6, 2008 -> 03:28 PM) One other factor on why Perhaps we do not know what to expect from a legitimate female candidate for President. This is actually the one thing I tried to avoid with my whole post on policy issues earlier. I can't honestly say that deep down somewhere buried that doesn't play into my decision, because I'm a geologist and not a psychologist. But I'd like to think that this is not something that bothers me. I've voted for Boxer, I've voted for Feinstein, I don't on the surface feel like I have a problem with voting for a woman, I feel like I have a problem with this particular one, and their history of policy.
  21. QUOTE(BearSox @ Feb 6, 2008 -> 02:35 PM) depends on the guy... Considering how little we have...name the 2 guys you'd least like to give up in our system, and then add one more.
  22. May as well note something non-candidate related, eh? This is kind of cool (pun intented), and continues the trend of business being far, far, far ahead of the Bush Administration on the needs of the country/world.
  23. QUOTE(bmags @ Feb 6, 2008 -> 02:43 PM) i think people would be surprised how much casual fans love the home run calls and catch phrases of Hawk. More than that, I know division rivals hate hawk when they have to listen to his broadcasts, but here at Mizzou, people I've met that have listened to sox games love hawk. And he's been the announcer since I was a kid. Good or bad it's part of the experience. I know I for one was at a party on the first night of the world series in 05 and I did the full call for both Crede and JD's homers in that game.
  24. Pick your poison. Either payroll doesn't go up or prices don't go up.
  25. QUOTE(BearSox @ Feb 6, 2008 -> 02:25 PM) I'd take Crisp over Owens anyday... Well, straight up sure, but that's never the question. The question is always...would you take Owens + $5 million a year for the next couple years (aka the salary of a Linebrink) + whatever guy we'd have to give up from our thin system over Crisp?
