  1. QUOTE(BearSox @ Jan 4, 2008 -> 03:09 PM) well, generally teams don't get 5 first round picks... so it is a bit of a bad comparison... Looking back at the 02 draft, James Loney would be sweet to have right now. Well, if we're doing the hole hindsight thing, I'd really love the guy who went 2 picks after Casey Rogowski.
  2. QUOTE(Greg The Bull Luzinski @ Jan 4, 2008 -> 02:43 PM) Or what is the sound of one hand clapping? I'm a bit lost by the mixing of metaphors but I think my answer is:
  3. QUOTE(The Beast @ Jan 4, 2008 -> 02:43 PM) Well, what do you (and everyone else think) about taking a flier on Freddy Garcia or Josh Fogg? Freddie Garcia will probably not be ready to pitch until midseason at the earliest from what most of the reports I've read have said. And from what we've seen of Freddo in the past, how confident are people that he'll be willing to put in the work and conditioning to get himself into shape for that deadline? Josh Fogg might be a reasonable gamble. Threw 165 innings last year. No idea what he's asking for $wise. Had an ERA near 5 last year but that was carried by Coors. ERA of 4.15 away from Coors. I still favor giving the ball to the guys we have and realizing that we still have a line of 7 or 8 potential starters this year, but that's not the worst idea I've ever heard, depending on the $$.
  4. QUOTE(Greg The Bull Luzinski @ Jan 4, 2008 -> 02:36 PM) Perhaps more than reinforcing the crap shoot that prospects can be, this reinforces that the White Sox suck at that crap shoot known as the draft when you see the history of people they passed up. So who sucks worse...the team that's doing the crappy drafting or the team who is trading for all the crappy players from our crappy drafts?
  5. QUOTE(DaGame2584 @ Jan 4, 2008 -> 02:24 PM) I feel the same about DLS. Ditto. I'd take Swisher for 2 potential mid-rotation guys who are 1 and 2-3 years away respectively and a struggling formerly high prospect RF. If one of those 3 turns into a real stud this will hurt, but for 3 guys who might be average, that's a good buy.
  6. QUOTE(witesoxfan @ Jan 4, 2008 -> 01:13 PM) So Gio is now Jim Parque Jr. Nice. This trade is going to look worse than it actually will be because Gio is going to be good in Oakland; switching to a worse division and a much, much better ballpark will help that immensely. I could see him putting up a 4.25 ERA within the next year or two where he would be putting up 4.75-5.00 as a member of the Sox. Quite frankly, same thing applies to Swisher too. Unless Gio turns into Barry Zito, gives them 200 innings and puts up an ERA in the low 3's for 5 straight years, I think he's a fair price for Swisher. DLS is the only one that worries me in that he could project higher, but who knows right now.
  7. QUOTE(The Beast @ Jan 4, 2008 -> 01:15 PM) -Sign a veteran starting pitcher to eat up innings---Colon. It certainly seems that right now, unless you're a big fan of Kyle Lohse, there's very little on the market in terms of guys who are going to eat innings, given the report we saw in the other thread about Colon not even being able to hit 90 with his fastball.
  8. QUOTE(Steve9347 @ Jan 4, 2008 -> 01:47 PM) They asked him what was up with it. He said that he wasn't getting good pitches on 2-0 counts like he always had, and he would work hard and try to learn from Thome, Konerko, and Dye how they stay consistent in their power numbers. This basically is in direct reference to the horrible lineup in Oakland and how there was no protection so there was no incentive for the other team to give him ANYTHING to hit. He was hitting in front of Thomas the year he had the big year right?
  9. Didn't see that anyone had posted this yet, so here it is.
  10. Meanwhile, here's a McCain one yesterday for folks to chew on, from a town meeting in New Hampshire yesterday (video at link). Never mind, here's vid.
  11. QUOTE(Controlled Chaos @ Jan 4, 2008 -> 11:55 AM) Can someone point me to one of this guys posts? Try this thread if you just want to learn a bit about who he is and what he does.
  12. I think it really is a bodily function for him.
  13. QUOTE(RockRaines @ Jan 4, 2008 -> 10:47 AM) Oakland acquired about half of our minors this offseason. Billy Beane is still a god amongst GM's at recognizing talent, and KW is garbage at recognizing talent.
  14. No one has posted it yet, but the December Jobs report was as bad as we've seen in a couple years.
  15. He just released a tape like last week didn't he?
  16. QUOTE(BigSqwert @ Jan 4, 2008 -> 09:02 AM) He is polling extremely low in SC. Last time I checked he was getting about 1% of the black vote down there. And the first win by Obama may well help enormously with that vote, because that vote was splitting pretty evenly between Obama and Clinton earlier in the polling seasons.
  17. QUOTE(DonnyDevito @ Jan 3, 2008 -> 08:40 PM) you're right about one thing. if JC shows up, forget about it! let's be real. westbrook and verlander aren't that good. they won't repeat what they did last season. bondy has mental issues often giving up 3 to 4 runs in the 1st inning of every start. the tigers wish they had our pen at this point. zumaya isn't anything special post injury and grilli is just a running joke. i think our pitching is right there with the indians and tigers. especially given linebrink's addition. many aren't expecting much from him but if he shows up with JC, we're in the postseason. i don't think there will be a finer setup-closer duo in the central than linebrink-jenks. Westbrook isn't that good...but dude...Yes, Verlander is that good.
  18. QUOTE(TheBigHurt @ Jan 3, 2008 -> 08:21 PM) Holy f***ing s***, a good move? YAY! Nice to see a stud like Swisher on the team. Finally, some good news... BTW, you guys complaining that we're still not a contender... one move doesn't make a team gold, but it takes time and various good pieces. Here's one good piece. Be happy. If the starting pitchers we have step up, then this team could well be a contender right now. That's a big if, but we certainly have an offense that could pull it off.
  19. QUOTE(DonnyDevito @ Jan 3, 2008 -> 08:00 PM) that's what i don't get though. cabrera, supposedly has failed in lead off before, so it makes sense to keep him hitting second with swisher leading off. crazy but true. Cabrera hasn't really led off much though, and not in several years. It's not exactly that fair to say he'll never be a quality leadoff guy. He's not the best option there, but if he hits .300 out of that slot and Swisher puts up a .400+ OBP in front of Thome, as a switch hitter...that is the building blocks of a solid offense.
  20. QUOTE(RME JICO @ Jan 3, 2008 -> 07:49 PM) Swisher can play 1B. Wouldn't it be nice to have Swisher move to 1B and Paulie DH against LHP? I still think it makes more sense to rest the older, much more banged up Jermaine Dye as DH against LHP than it does to rest Konerko. Yeah rest Konerko some times, but give JD's legs the rest. We saw what he could do when he was healthy in 06, and we saw how much he struggled when beaten up in 07.
  21. QUOTE(SoxFan1 @ Jan 3, 2008 -> 07:43 PM) Just off the top of my head without looking, Bailey, Cueto, Chamberlain, Hughes, Buccholz... Kershaw...
  22. QUOTE(MurcieOne @ Jan 3, 2008 -> 07:39 PM) Winners Obama (Biggest Winner) Edwards Huckabee McCain Losers Clinton Romney (Biggest Loser) Thompson Dude, Rudy pulled 4%. HE needs to be on the losers list.
  23. QUOTE(Heads22 @ Jan 3, 2008 -> 07:04 PM) I do think it says something for our state that a black man is winning the way that Obama is. It also says something about America that an African American now has a solid chance at the Presidency.
  24. QUOTE(DonnyDevito @ Jan 3, 2008 -> 07:13 PM) that could be a very bad thing. like chris young bad. beane knows how to GM. KW doesn't know how to GM though. Everyone we draft stinks. KW should have been fired long ago for drafting all these guys because they all suck.
