Bastard. He's trying to get himself traded to San Diego.

Whether or not it'd be better including Gordon or Kirk overall isn't necessarily the point in this sort of deal though. The point that no one should forget is that Kirk's contract makes a deal like this 1000% easier. You have to include like 5-6 guys to come up with a legal deal for Kobe if you don't include Kirk or Wallace. And if it was possible to get Kobe Bryant without giving up more than 1 of Gordon, Deng, TT, Wallace, and Noah, it'd be hard not to jump at that.

QUOTE(LosMediasBlancas @ Oct 31, 2007 -> 10:59 AM) Either that, or have the team test everything before it goes into your system. Baseball was supposed to be putting out a full list of MLB approved, clean supplements when their new testing policy went into force. And there's always the backup option: save 1 or 2 samples of everything you take. If you test positive for something and can Identify the company, sue their pants off. Yet for some reason, all these folks who make millions of dollars with their athletic performance can't seem to think of that one, even though it could save their reputations. It's almost as if the supplements weren't the problme.

I'll leave it to you guys to tell me what this one means.

QUOTE(CWSGuy406 @ Oct 31, 2007 -> 10:09 AM) So that's a guarantee? He was dumb enough to test positive twice already. Even Bonds hasn't been that dumb.

Hillary reportedly picks up the AFSCME endorsement.

QUOTE(CWSGuy406 @ Oct 31, 2007 -> 09:53 AM) I'd still sign him. Owens can have CF for the first month-and-a-half while we grab Cameron at a discounted price. Until he tests positive again, and gets a 50 day suspension.

QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Oct 31, 2007 -> 07:49 AM) So, as far as you know, who has good ground games in Iowa? Well, Edwards has the potential benefit of having done this before, and Obama generally seems to have a motivated following, so in terms of ground games you might hypothetically think that they'd be in better shape than Hillarity. On the other hand though, Iowa seems to be moving its caucuses to January 3rd, and this is before Iowa's colleges will be back in session; hence, most of the students will be at home. And if they're registered at school, or they go to school out of state, then that could put a major dent in the ground game of those 2. And then there are dramatic complicating factors beyond that. For example, in 04, Dennis Kucinich actually got to play something of a kingmaker, because on the eve of the convention he told all of his supporters to caucus for Mr. Edwards instead of himself, and that may well have been enough in terms of people and momentum to push Edwards into 2nd place over Dean. With Kucinich in this race again, and Richardson and others hanging out at the back, there's still plenty of room for movement right up until the end. It's not that hard to imagine one of these folks sitting down with Gov. Richardson and promising him a VP slot if his people caucus for that other candidate and push that person over the top, for example.

Well, this might put a damper on demand for his services as a FA this offseason. You know...if you test positive once, and get ordered counseling for it...you think you might be smart enough to actually have everything you're taking tested to see if anything you're taking is actually tainted. Unless, of course, you know, you're lying through your teeth.

QUOTE(gosox41 @ Oct 30, 2007 -> 08:24 PM) I thought the Dodgers were pissed @ Boras about the JD Drew fiasco. I'm surprised they'd want to deal with him again for such a big player. Bob In hindsight, I'm not sure they're complaining. -
Supposedly there was just an earthquake of some level in S.F.

QUOTE(LosMediasBlancas @ Oct 30, 2007 -> 06:39 PM) Mexicali is a border town like 2 hours from here. I might have to take a drive down there and check out BA. I wonder how many Americans, let alone Sox fans go down there to watch the games. I bet he'd freak if he heard me yell his name. Want some company? -
QUOTE(29andPoplar @ Oct 30, 2007 -> 06:32 PM) These two moves are not a surprise. Cutting loose Podsednik and Cintron is next. White Sox can and hopefully will get better players than all four of these guys. Actually...cutting Podsednik can wait for a couple weeks, because Scott as far as I know doesn't have an option the Sox would need to pick up; he was on a 1 year deal and the Sox would have to offer him arbitration, the deadline for which isn't until December. Uribe, however, is under contract and has about 14 days left before the team has to decide whether or not to pick up his option.

By the way...these were the easy 2 cuts. There need to be 2 more. And presumably, this drops the 40 man to 37, thus clearing all the room we want for those kids folks were worried about.

QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Oct 30, 2007 -> 05:06 PM) So now, Obama seems to have pulled statistically even with Clinton in Iowa, and Edwards is falling back. And on the other hand, ARG has Clinton pushing up to a 10 point Iowa lead.

QUOTE(jackie hayes @ Oct 30, 2007 -> 04:56 PM) And that means...absolutely nothing. Tejada has outslugged Furcal every single year, and he'll do it again next year. Hitting-wise, I take Tejada in a heartbeat. Furcal's ops+ the last 4 years has been 95, 102, 107, 76. Tejada's has been 131, 128, 126, 109. They each had a fluke bad year, and Tejada still DRASTICALLY outperformed Furcal. The question is whether Tejada's still good enough defensively to hold down ss. There's talk in Baltimore of shifting him to 3b, with Mora moving to lf -- and note that the Orioles don't have any young, decent hitting ss pushing him, either. The other issue is, since Ozzie's gotta have his speedster to leadoff, it'd be nice to get someone who fits that profile who can actually hit. That and defense are the 2 advantages to Furcal. But his bat is leagues behind Tejada's. All of that assumes though that the price for the 2 players would be equal. I would seriously expect Tejada to be much more expensive in terms of what we'd have to give up. -
QUOTE(Dick Allen @ Oct 30, 2007 -> 03:46 PM) That leaves Gavin Floyd, John Danks, and Gio Gonzalez battling for 40% of the starting rotation. That isn't going to win. Well then, there is no way this team is going to win next year if you're right on that. Because we can't upgrade the lineup without moving pitching (our best asset) and moving pitching means that 2 of those guys start.

Applause.

Arenas has said that he's going to test the FA market at the end of the year, and hence, WA may not want to lose him without getting something in return.

QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Oct 30, 2007 -> 11:06 AM) I bet I know what this: Was. Very classy. He's going to be shipped out soon, if not as part of a larger deal, then in exchange for whatever they can get for him. Hey, as far as he's concerned, if this team isn't going to play him, the sooner he can get them to dump him on someone else, the sooner he can get at bats and a chance to actually do something, so at this point, I think it's hard to be surprised by him lashing out.
-
Ouch. Man, it's really going to suck if he winds up succeeding for the Twins after we cut him.

QUOTE(CanOfCorn @ Oct 30, 2007 -> 10:33 AM) Are you kidding me? NO ONE has brought up the fact that Uribe was FIFTH on the team in WALKS last year with 34!!!!!!! That's just plain ridiculous...and if it doesn't change, the Sox aren't goin' anywhere. I'm flabbergasted and appalled by that stat. A significant part of that stat is that Juan Uribe was 3rd on the team in plate appearances. The guys who might qualify as more patient hitters often wound up playing only small parts of the season because either they got hurt or they were called up midseason. NAME G AB BB Paul Konerko 151 549 78 Juan Uribe 150 513 34 Jermaine Dye 138 508 45 A.J. Pierzynski 136 472 25 Jim Thome 130 432 95 Josh Fields 100 373 35 Jerry Owens 93 356 27 Tadahito Iguchi (45 Phi) 90 327 44 Darin Erstad 87 310 28 Rob Mackowiak (28 SD) 85 237 23 Scott Podsednik 62 214 13 Andy Gonzalez 67 189 25 Danny Richar 56 187 16 Alex Cintron 68 185 9 Joe Crede 47 167 10 Luis Terrero 61 117 12 Toby Hall 38 116 3 Pablo Ozuna 27 78 3 Ryan Sweeney 15 45 4 Owens was right behind Uribe in 1/2 a season. Iguchi was beyond Uribe in 1/2 a season. Hell, Erstad almost caught Uribe in 1/2 a season. We had 4 guys on the team who played 130 or more games, the other 5 starting positions got divided up, so no one had a chance to get that high in walks because they only got 250-300 at bats.

QUOTE(Texsox @ Oct 30, 2007 -> 10:11 AM) I thought there are already laws on the books against torture, asking if this fits the definition of the law seems like a valid question. Now I wish they were more interested in his thought process and how he arrived at his decision, than the actual decision. Ultimately that is more important. If he won't even state a decision, what does that say about his thought process?

QUOTE(RockRaines @ Oct 30, 2007 -> 10:10 AM) I get the feeling that KW is going hard after him under the radar. He knows he is a good fit, and he knows we can get him somewhat cheaply because of his contract and the Dodgers young talent. I've learned that a lot of us seem very poor at guessing what KW is doing under the radar. Out of every deal he's made in the last couple years, the only ones we seemed to even suspect beforehand were the Erstad signing and the Thome trade, and the Thome trade hit us pretty rapidly anyway.
