  1. QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Oct 30, 2007 -> 06:22 AM) Balta, you wouldn't want Carl Crawford? Not that he can be had for MacD and Aardsma like MG is suggesting ridiculously, but, I think he'd look awfully good on the team. Also, the article saying the system doesn't have an SS with MLB potential ahead of Silverio is inaccurate. There isn't one who'd be ready any time this year or next, but, there are a couple guys who will be in High A and Low A that look like they might turn out to be something. The reason I don't want Crawford is quite simple, and it's the same reason I don't want a guy like Hunter or Rowand: as this team is currently built, they're not worth the price to us. I'd be happy to give up MMac and Aardsma for Crawford, I'd be happy to pay Hunter or Rowand $3 million a year, but neither of those is going to happen. I don't want to give Hunter $18 mil a year, I don't want to give Rowand >$10 mil a year, and I don't want to give up Danks, Fields, Gio, and DLS for Crawford.
  2. I only bring that Linebrink deal up because 1/2 the folks here seemed to want that deal done mid 06. Yes, I know he's a FA, it's a joke, but an effective one I believe.
  3. Kenny said that? Sweet, welcome to the South Side Alex!
  4. QUOTE(southsideirish71 @ Oct 29, 2007 -> 08:40 PM) Trading Fields for pitching prospects for a team devoid of position prospects is nearly baseball retarded. Low cost players are needed to complement other players. Getting bullpen help for a young guy like Fields would be dumb. I still say we bring back the deal everyone wanted mid 06...Fields for Linebrink. Get it done KW!
  5. The scary thing? I'm not sure there's a person on that list (save Fields, Crede, and Konerko) mentionned in this article who I actually want next season on the White Sox. Save ARod of course.
  6. QUOTE(forrestg @ Oct 29, 2007 -> 08:12 PM) On the other hand how many people would line up at the gates to see someone like AROD pop out about 50 to 70 homers and almost be a guarantee to make the HOF and increase the stadium attendance after OUR dismal 2007 record. How many people would come to see the white sox and how many would come to see AROD? Well, there's still one more issue though; ballpark size. You might be able to pack in 50,000 to see Alex, and 70,000 to see Alex try to beat Mr. Tetrahydrogestrinone's current record, but there's only so many more tickets that this particular franchise will be able to sell and so much that people will be willing to pay for an ordinary game. Not to say that we can't afford it, but just adding in all the details. If you're looking for the attendence increase to pay for a guy, you have to take into account whether or not the tickets even exist, and with us already hanging out fairly close to capacity, there's not a ton more room right now, depending on how the Season Ticket renewals go.
  7. QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Oct 29, 2007 -> 07:28 PM) As of right now, there are exactly two teams in that range. Maybe in 5 years, but not now. If one were so inclined...one actually could find a piece of data that could be used to predict the salary of those 2 teams a few years down the road. Esp. Boston and the teams right behind it; the Luxury Tax threshold, which so far seems to have tracked the Red Sox spending pretty well (with the Angels and so on $10 mil or something like that below the amount).
  8. QUOTE(mr_genius @ Oct 29, 2007 -> 02:50 PM) you really think thats all he did? well, he sure fooled everyone i guess That award that year was one of the biggest cop-outs in Time Magazine's history, and was a great harbinger of what we were about to see from the media the next couple years.
  9. QUOTE(jackie hayes @ Oct 29, 2007 -> 02:37 PM) The Braves were BADLY in need of some pitching. Getting a solid, if unspectacular pitcher, with Escobar taking over at ss, could be a big improvement overall. And...saving a lot of money that could be spent in other places (resigning Tex?), and getting an OF that could in a couple years take over the hole being left by Jones....that's not a bad formula. Between Jones walking and Renteria traded...the Braves have freed up at least $20 million in salary compared to 07, depending on what exactly happens with all the money Boston sent over with Renteria.
  10. QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Oct 29, 2007 -> 12:29 PM) How many times has Skiles been quoted as saying that they need more from Thomas? I know I have seen articles about needing him to play more focused and more consistantly. I also remember seeing stuff about them being upset that Tyrus didn't work out with his teammates at the Berto Center this summer. What else should be said? Well, the other part that could be said is that until training camp started, there were at least positive reports appearing about his work over the summer. There was a more detailed ESPN piece on that same topic but I can't find it now.
  11. QUOTE(bigruss22 @ Oct 29, 2007 -> 01:32 PM) Seriously, I was just thinking about who replaces ARod? Betemit? He isnt all that great, and Crede would be an upgrade over him. COuld Crede land a B prospect from the Yanks? They could be desperate enough and may not want to put all their hopes in Lowell, who will be highly pursuited to resign with the BoSox. Maybe we fetch a couple C grade prospects. Crede for them could be that high risk/high reward type deal for them. They may have to give up a decent prospect but if he returns to form he could be a .280 25 hr with a ton of RBI in that lineup, plus he provides great defense for them and would bring a team first attitude. Plus they could afford an extension with him if he turns out to be good again. There is no reason right now to trade Joe Crede for "C" prospects.
  12. QUOTE(CWSGuy406 @ Oct 29, 2007 -> 02:02 PM) Detroit isn't a small market team with Illitch as the owner. He's shown with the Red Wings that he'll pay $$$ for star players, he's also shown that with a willingness to go WELL over slot with draft picks (Porcello, Miller). Obviously A-Rod is a bit of a different beast, but if Illitch sets his sights on A-Rod, there won't be a whole lot to stop the Tigers from submitting a very likeable offer. The Tigers suddenly have very little need for ARod. Anyway...now, it's officially time for me to start hoping that the Renteria Boston had was the "AL" version of Renteria.
  13. QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Oct 29, 2007 -> 11:37 AM) So who do they move? Inge or Guillen? or DH one of them or A-Rod? 'Cause I'd love to see Guillen for the Sox at SS. ........ Seperate thought... I'm giving the Sox about a 5% chance of landing A-Rod. Everyone else seems to think its zero percent. Guillen moves to 1st in that scenario. They've been wanting to do that anyway.
  14. QUOTE(thedoctor @ Oct 29, 2007 -> 10:41 AM) iu assistant senderoff resigns over phone violations If this were the Filibuster...soon he'd either be getting a promotion or a medal.
  15. QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Oct 29, 2007 -> 10:16 AM) Wow. That's huge. Not a giant surprise maybe, but to see it in those stark numbers... that is an embarrasment. 63% of the stories on the campaign were essentially horse race, "Who's winning today" fluff. I don't think I can stress that enough.
  16. So, here I can present today the first study I've seen of the performance of the media during this campaign. Its interesting enough that I'm posting it in both the GOP and Dem threads. I'll post some different details here, but I suggest at least taking the time to read the summary.
  17. So, here I can present today the first study I've seen of the performance of the media during this campaign. There's enough in it for each side to get annoyed at, so I'll probably post it in both the Dem and GOP threads, and I'm going to highlight one little bit in this one. So, the Public literally seems to be begging for the Press to spend more time covering the actual candidate positions, backgrounds, and where their money comes from. The Press responds by telling more about how much money each one has and which one is winning today. (available in graph format at link). I think this is actually a remarkable demonstration of how out of touch the media has gotten with its market; the people actually want a bit of substance, but substance is hard and sometimes expensive, so we don't get any of it.
  18. QUOTE(Texsox @ Oct 29, 2007 -> 09:45 AM) I'm not certain exactly what that means. If that means they are free to work in their offices, return to their districts, etc. Isn't that a good thing? I guess it is up to the individual official on how they use the Fridays. So if the GOP wants to make a point, let's see them using that day productively. I don't read anything there that would prevent them from certain activities except voting. The same Democrats made a big deal back in January or December about how they weren't going to be a do-nothing Congress, and one of the things they had to show that they meant business was that they were going to hold a 5 day work week. It's actually probably helped; this Congress has already held nearly 2x as many votes as the Congress did last year. But if you're going to try to get positive press by doing the right thing in one case, you're going to get exactly the same negative press when you turn your back on that promise.
  19. ESPN's saying the Yankees have a manager. Just think...the Red Sox got roughly 10 hours of coverage sandwiched between Yankee events. They must feel truly special.
  20. Didn't someone post an anti-Gore screed by the person who actually makes the predictions that get publicized each year a couple days ago?
  21. QUOTE(Kalapse @ Oct 29, 2007 -> 09:12 AM) No to Kaz Matsui ('07 Home: .330/.381/.482/.864 | Road: .249/.304/.333/.638) and no to Scott Linebrink (it's never a good idea to spend $5M-$8M a year on a middle reliever especially one with as many question marks as him.) As for the last part of the first post, options will be picked up/declined over the next 10 days so we will see a little action, aside from that though I wouldn't expect KW to do anything substantial until at least Thanksgiving. You know...the more I've thought about it...the more open I would actually be to Linebrink, for a couple reasons. 1. I think that his performance this season has to somewhat depress what his value will be on the open market. After his work this year, I don't think anyone's offering him $5-$8 million a year. 2. He fills a role in the bullpen that we need to fill; that other righty. We have 2 Lefties with Boone and Thor, we have Jenks, we have MMac, and we have a Roogy in Wasserman, that leaves 1 spot to fill, and the ideal guy to do it is a righty who has experience throwing a decent number of innings. Even if all he gives us is the performance we got last year...we'd basically be adding a Vizcaino type guy to the pen, and we've seen the value of that. 3. Linebrink may well be set up for a good bounceback year. 4. The biggest one; everyone else in our bullpen can be called "young". At most, we're talking about guys with a year or two of experience. And if you even consider that we have guys like Aardsma and Sisco waiting in our system, it gets even younger. It wouldn't be a bad thing at all to put some experience out there just to give these guys another voice to learn from. Naturally, it all depends on the contract and on every other move we make and the salary constraints. I don't want Uribe at SS so that we could sign Linebrink. But if it could be made to work, I might live with it.
  22. QUOTE(southsideirish71 @ Oct 28, 2007 -> 09:15 PM) Well based on excuses for our 06 pitching. I expect the entire Red Sox team to fall apart, as they played into October. The Detroit Tigers, and hell the St. Louis Cardinals both say hello.
  23. At least it wasn't the Yankees. Or Cubs. Come on KW, get us back there next year.
