Bush tells Miers screw a congressional order and keep quiet!!
Balta1701 replied to whitesoxfan101's topic in The Filibuster
QUOTE(kapkomet @ Jul 20, 2007 -> 07:23 PM) No, it's not... but of course, it is to Democrats. How is arguing that the Congress has no ability to investigate potential violations of the Presidential Records Act, the Hatch Act, and the rules governing elections and saying the DOJ will not enforce contempt citations issued by Congress not saying exactly that? The courts have ruled explicitly that if Congress is investigating potential violations of the law, especially in cases not involving National Security issues, Congressional authority wins over executive priveledge. This situation is essentially ignoring that. -
QUOTE(DrunkBomber @ Jul 20, 2007 -> 07:21 PM) Ya, but whats 130 million dollars between friends. Im curious if theyre gonna start having clauses in players contracts saying teams dont have to pay the players or take the cap hit if they release trouble makers. I'm quite certain that any CBA would never allow that. Because what that would do is remove the penalty for signing guys of questionable character. How quickly would people be all over PacMan or Tank if they could sign them and then cut them with no questions asked the first time they acted up? Making it cost teams money is the best incentive teams have to keep their guys in line. Hell, teams could start encouraging overpaid guys to act up if that ever happened.

QUOTE(kapkomet @ Jul 20, 2007 -> 06:36 PM) That's what the Democrats want anyway. Which is what this is about. I would be happy at this point by just establishing somehow that the President can not defy the law at any time and place he chooses, which is essentially the power he's arguing for right now. -
QUOTE(DrunkBomber @ Jul 20, 2007 -> 05:52 PM) I suppose, but I wouldnt imagine they would be able to offer too much with how many qbs they have on their roster right now. The Falcons stil have Vick's contract.

Mack 0/3, 3k's. Ditto Iguchi.

QUOTE(whitesoxfan101 @ Jul 20, 2007 -> 06:14 PM) The scouts at this game aren't going to be ripping Count. He hasn't pitched a bad game at all, if not for his dumbass manager, this could be a different story to say the least. He's he decent stuff in these 6 innings too. Of course, scouts probably also might notice whether or not that was actually a home run in the first.

QUOTE(The Ginger Kid @ Jul 20, 2007 -> 05:10 PM) Jerry Remy still whining, says it's really 3-3 I'll make a deal, we give them that HR, they give us back the one Joe Crede hit in Baltimore in 04, the no-call of which IIRC sent us into a tailspin.

QUOTE(Rex Kicka** @ Jul 20, 2007 -> 04:36 PM) And our current President has left the only oversight option left to congress to be impeachment by the way with this latest executive order. There's still the inherent contempt option and the option to start de-funding parts of the Administration. -

Who are some options for us at SS in 2008

QUOTE(bulokis @ Jul 20, 2007 -> 02:45 PM) How about Clint Barmes? I thought he was going to be good for the Rockies but he got injured, right now he is in the minors. Haven't we had enough with underperforming shortstops from the Rockies? -
QUOTE(DrunkBomber @ Jul 20, 2007 -> 03:18 PM) Why would he waste his time trying out in Tampa. They got Garcia, Simms, Gradkowski and the rights to Plummer. He should just fly to Atlanta and call it one. Because he might start over any of them, and they might offer more money.

QUOTE(Markbilliards @ Jul 20, 2007 -> 02:01 PM) Does anyone know how good of defense Richar plays for either 2B or SS? Richar was moved from SS to 2nd because he wasn't a good enough defender. He'll probably be tolerable at 2nd, with good range, but might make the occasional silly error. -
QUOTE(Mplssoxfan @ Jul 20, 2007 -> 01:34 PM) Agreed. There are going to be a lot more names bandied about before this runs its course. Actually, I believe CNN completed their analysis of the list last night. No one as big as Vitters seems to have popped up so easily (There's still people looking, always a chance someone was smart enough to use a pay phone, etc.)

NBA Ref Fixes Games for the Mob
Balta1701 replied to vandy125's topic in Alex’s Olde Tyme Sports Pub
QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ Jul 20, 2007 -> 11:19 AM) Well I think people could make a case that the NBA was potentially doing that (to get ratings) but I didn't think the mob was in on it. If someone had money on the Lakers in the series...that would have worked the same way. Up 3-2 with 2 games at home, Sacto should have won that series by any and all accounts, which means that there was probably some big odds available on the Lakers coming back. -

QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ Jul 20, 2007 -> 11:12 AM) He still has Penny and Lowe and both are pretty damn good so I don't think he needs to get desperate. I think If I were him I'd solely look for top flight players I could get (garland would fit that bill) or guys I could get without giving up much at all. I for one don't think the Dodgers are in a position to play this half-way. Either they need to decide that their future is with their wealth of prospects and the money they have, sit back, and be willing to miss the playoffs this season with the knowledge that better things are on the way with Kemp, Billingsly, Loney, Ethier, and so on in their lineup for years to come, or they need to make a big move at the Garland level or higher where they move at least one of their biggest names for someone to help them right now. I don't think they'll win that division without making a big upgrade somewhere; i don't think guys I could get on the cheap would be enough to win it. -

QUOTE(SoxFan1 @ Jul 20, 2007 -> 02:55 AM) I'm fairly certain Fields will not be in the outfield in 2008. If Joe Crede is ready for Spring Training, and I think all indications thus far are that he will be, the Sox will want him in the lineup if he's not outrighted this offseason. That way they at least can give him a chance to either rebuild some trade value or push himself back into the "B" or even "A" level FA categories when he walks.

QUOTE(LowerCaseRepublican @ Jul 20, 2007 -> 09:05 AM) I understand the need for executive privilege at times for any administration but I am confused as to how they can claim it in this specific case. Legally, they can't. Either they can claim executive priveledge on the documents and therefore admit that they've directly violated the Presidential Records Act, or the documents should be available, and they probably violated that act anyway. But, that's not the reason they're trying it. The reason they're trying it was made abundandly clear yesterday. The President's folks finally came out and said it; they control the Justice Department, and therefore, if Congress issues contempt citations, the Justice department will ignore them. Yes, you read that correctly; according to published reports today, the DOJ will ignore any contempt citation issued by Congress that it d*mn well wants to, and therefore, Congress has no enforcement ability whatsoever. The only other option may well be to defund the DOJ, or to make use of the "Inherent contempt" ability of Congress to hold a trial on its own, something that hasn't been done since the 30's. -
QUOTE(AirScott @ Jul 20, 2007 -> 07:27 AM) The idea of an all-flamethrowers pen sounded like a good idea, and looked OK in April. Nobody likes facing guys who come into the 6th inning throwing pitches at 96 mph. Like I said before, our hitters looked uncomfortable when Andy Sisco pitched against us, but they'd knock him around a bit. If everyone in that pen was actually coming out throwing at 96, then I think we'd have been a lot better off. Unfortunately, I didn't see much of 96 from anyone other than Bobby, and even then Bobby was supposed to be at 98+.

QUOTE(ChiSox_Sonix @ Jul 20, 2007 -> 07:59 AM) haha this is funny...ive jokingly made comments about this ever since the LA-Portland series several years ago. Of course, i was mostly kidding, but its funny to see this now. I wonder how long back these allegations are going to encompass I've thought game 6 of LA/Sacto back in, when was it, 01, was fixed since I watched it. Game in Sacto, but the Kings wind up with 3x as many fouls called on them as the Lakers, thus managing to guarantee a game 7.
