Just so someone says this...if Tim Anderson or Luis Robert came up and made dumb baserunning plays, or misplayed a ball in the outfield I wouldn't really be that mad or be surprised. Rookies are supposed to make dumb baserunning plays, but you're ok with that because they learn from them and in the meanwhile they're hitting 30 home runs or whatever they're doing in year 1, or at least they turn into an MVP candidate in a couple years and that's the payoff for working through the struggles. The problem with Madrigal is...he has one strong tool, making contact with the baseball, but little power. That means, if he comes up and struggles on defense because he's a rookie, struggles with baserunning with a rookie, his value overall is pretty limited. If he was a 9th round pick, made it to the big leagues, and that was his profile, again I wouldn't be mad. But this is a number 4 overall pick. We knew he didn't have power, we knew his hit tool was strong. That doesn't profile to a number 4 pick...without the defense, baserunning, and frankly - not having to make the excuse that "he's a rookie". The reason he has the extra focus is that a player with a strong hit tool, but who doesn't steal bases, needs Marcus Semien level work to become a good defender, has no power, and makes plenty of mental mistakes his first few years that hurt his team - that is a 9th round pick, not a #4 overall pick. He was coming out of a College World Series level program. He was supposed to be baseball smart - not just because he's a short white guy, but because if the team has to wait years for him to learn how to make those basic decisions, there's no way on Earth you should have drafted him that high. It's not like there was no chance to see video on him or scout him. If he can't be a solid baserunner right now, or a solid defender right now, if he's making those mental mistakes right now, then this team really should trade him now, because a team that is a couple years away will be a better place for him to work through those problems.

And this is basically the first time since Krzyzewski that he's been coached.

That's fair. It's believable. It's also not a hard deadline where "we're pulling our offer and stopping our interest in you so that the fans don't have to talk about this any more". Hendriks's side right now knows that teams have other options other than him. But he also does. He probably has 3 or 4 teams right now that will sign him to $35 million deals, but he wants $50 million and is willing to wait for a team to bid up into that range. If one team falls out because they've signed Hand, he can still sign the next comparable deal.

We said this before - not only do deadlines not work, they are disrespectful to the agent and the player. If you put contract offers out, and you retract them because someone else accepted your offer and you don't need the player any more that's one thing. But you can't say "Sign this by January 10 or we'll walk away" because if you don't have a closer signed on January 11, and they come back and say "we'll accept", they know you'll say yes.

Deep down, I expect Ivanka to get charges but no jail time for Tax Fraud in New York, because that's pretty blatant. I expect her to run for Senate in Florida in 2022. I expect either Trump himself or Trump Jr. to be on the primary ballot for the Republicans in 2024, depending on health and on the Southern District of New York.

MAGA easily won the Republican Primary in 2016, and won the electoral college in 2016. They are and always have been the core of the Republican Party. If you want to win that primary, get them behind you and it is a blowout.

Sarah Palin faded away...when Trump took over that mantle. If no Trump is on the ballot, in 4 years Cruz will be offering Trump a night with his wife in exchange for an endorsement.

I mean this time it was mostly to let Trump yell about how the election was stolen, but otherwise look above - getting turnout among white nonvoters has been Trumps thing. They go to the confederate flag waving rallies, get excited, and that drives turnout.

But since Madrigal doesn't have any power, stealing bases is a way to make up some of those missing bases. Perhaps his only way.

Frankly, I would be somewhat disappointed if Madrigal can't steal a decent number of bases. He's going to be hitting what, 8th or 9th, so if he gets on it is literally going to be Anderson, Robert, and Moncada following him? That's going to be one of the ways he can be a more successful and valuable player. It doesn't have to be 50, but I'd really like to see 20+ at a fairly high rate.

I'm sure they've talked about him, because they've probably at least talked about everyone. That doesn't mean it would be a smart move for them, with their salary limits.

In Pennsylvania right now, the Republicans in the state legislature are refusing to seat a Democrat whose election was close but who has been affirmed as the victor by courts. The PA Lt. Governor (Fetterman, somewhat famous on Twitter) refused to recognize a motion against seating that elected official, so the Republicans have removed him from the House chambers and are using the Pro Temp president to swear in everyone else. We're actually watching as the idea of majority rule crumbles. This person got more votes, but it doesn't count because the Republicans have the State Senate.
