  1. Brandon McCarthy. 14 2/3 innings. Against first, the best power hitting lineup in baseball, and second, against the best overall lineup in baseball. 0 runs. 5 hits. Brandon...wow. Well done kiddo. I can't wait to see you do this over a full year. Oh, and welcome back BMac's changeup...the pitch that disappeared in June! Man, that was fun to watch.
  2. Thank God that's over...DON'T SCARE ME LIKE THAT BOBBY!
  3. QUOTE(Reddy @ Sep 5, 2005 -> 12:05 PM) what happened to him? food poisoning? His Back's been bothering him for a couple weeks.
  4. QUOTE(fathom @ Sep 5, 2005 -> 12:02 PM) Is there any word on whether or not Colon will make his start against us this wknd? Last I heard Colon was basically day to day...there was no reason to think that he wouldn't start...but there's a decent chance he won't be available for more than 5 innigns or so. That could change in a few days.
  5. QUOTE(fathom @ Sep 5, 2005 -> 12:01 PM) Jenks in the 9th? Almost certainly. Will be a treat to see him against Manny.
  6. QUOTE(Brian @ Sep 5, 2005 -> 11:55 AM) Nice catch, Perez, don't ever f***ing do it again. Why does this remind me of the coach talking to Willie Mays Hays in Major League?
  7. When you saw it...you just knew it was a matter of time. It's taken barely a week for a prominent member of the Christian right to start blaming gay marriage for the Hurricane. Rick Scarborough of Vision America and the Judeo-Christian Council for Constitutional Restoration...a man who in late October will be running a major conference designed to "counter the war on faith" (attendees expected include: 2008 presidential candidate Senator Sam Brownback, Alan Keyes, Gary Bauer and Phyllis Schlafly)...had some fun things to say about the storm. Specifically...he blamed it on the gay marriage bill before the state government in California...bestiality in Washington state, and Israel's evacuation of settlements in Gaza. Link here.
  8. Ugh...what to do...what to do... 24 Marathon on A&E BMac versus the BoSox. Thank God for the Previous Channel button. Go get em Kiddo. Let's show these guys who the real bosses are. (p.s. You know you're actually getting old when you've followed a team all your life, and suddenly you can start looking at players on the team and genuinely call them "Kiddo")
  9. QUOTE(Heads22 @ Sep 4, 2005 -> 03:49 PM) Alright, I got a question. I'd prefer to send cash instead of a check. Did anyone else do that or would have any tips on what to do. The odds are that you'll also be able to go to a grocery store or other local shop & find someone who's collecting cash. I think it's actually more important in this one for those who are able to donate blood. When the twin towers fell...there was an increase in demand for blood, but probably very little decrease in supply, since there wasn't going to be a major blood donation center in the towers themselves. However, in this debacle, not only is there going to be a massive increase in demand for blood, there's going to be a huge drop in supply, because every single sanitary donation site in the whole city of New Orleans is shut down. So for the blood supply...this one is probably far worse than 9/11. Givelife.org is the website to set an appointment (Noon thursday for me)
  10. QUOTE(Rowand44 @ Sep 4, 2005 -> 11:29 AM) I wouldn't be surprised if now that Ozuna is actually playing a solid 3rd base that he'll be the everyday 3rd baseman the rest of the year even when Joe comes back. With the way Crede has played with the glove this year, I would be very surprised by that. On the other hand...I wouldn't be surprised if that became part of the plan in the offseason, with Crede/Boras hitting arbitration.
  11. QUOTE(Greg The Bull Luzinski @ Sep 4, 2005 -> 11:06 AM) I could not agree more. A win is a win. I would rather the more important players stay home on Monday and watch the game on TV. A travel day is exhausting enough for most people, but it must be more so for athletes. I would be fine if Timo batted third on Monday. Just as long as we are rested and healthy for the most important month. OCTOBER. It remains my opinion that the best way to be rested and healthy for October is to get the division clinched ASAP. Once you do that...the only thing to be gained by playing everyone is some combination of practice time and home field advantage...but we're going to have home field in the W.S. anyway, and we're a damn good road team.
  12. QUOTE(KipWellsFan @ Sep 4, 2005 -> 10:52 AM) Wondering where Dick Cheney has been? It's a shame I didn't run into him while I was in Wyoming...He'd have had a Condi-shoe-shopping moment of his own.
  13. QUOTE(LowerCaseRepublican @ Sep 4, 2005 -> 10:45 AM) The Red Cross has been banned from New Orleans and volunteers bringing food, water, blankets and other materials have been turned away by National Guardsmen and FEMA because there is no significant coordination for the assistance program. So they should bring Jesse Jackson, Barack Obama and the Rainbow Push Coalition down to New Orleans. Have them get in contact with the mayor & organize an effort to get assistance to where it needs to go. I would love to see the President arrest the mayor of New Orleans and Jesse Jackson for illegally trying to bring aid into New Orleans. Because the last thing the administration needs with the current claims of racism in respect to the lack of assistance is black people being beaten and harassed by police and National Guardsmen in the South. We've already had people ripping on an 18 year old kid who stole a bus in the middle of the city, drove it around picking up survivors, and took a full bus load out to Texas...because he stole the bus.
  14. My God...according to sources...Homeland Security Director Chertoff just said on Meet the Press that he learned about the Levee Breach from his Tuesday Morning Newspaper...24 hours after it had happened. Russert's first question was whether or not Chertoff was contemplating resigning. If he didn't learn about the levee breach for 24 hours after it happened, he shouldn't just be resigning...he should have to clean up the Superdome.
  15. Sri Lanka has given the U.S. an offer of $25,000...and they were hammered by the Tsunami a few months ago. For that one, I'm grateful. Japan has offered the U.S. $200,000, with maybe another $300,000 down the road. If I'm doing the math right, that's $.0016 for every person in Japan.
  16. QUOTE(NUKE_CLEVELAND @ Sep 4, 2005 -> 10:28 AM) Kuwait has offered 500 million to help out. Gulf War 1 cost the U.S. $76 billion.
  17. QUOTE(Texsox @ Sep 4, 2005 -> 10:21 AM) Amazing. Who was in charge and why wasn't a complete list of resources from major players like the military, made available? I am getting sicker by the moment thinking about the death and nightmares that could have been avoided. We have the greatest military this planet has ever seen, and we made tham almost non players. No one was in charge. FEMA and the DHS were supposed to be in charge. But they weren't. Go read that Trib piece...the Bataan actually dispatched an LCU loaded with food and a doctor to go towards New Orleans, and they were forced to turn around when the ship was ordered back out to sea. The only ones who could give orders for the military to send resources in? You guessed it...FEMA. If that Brown guy can't be jailed for this...he should at least be out of his job yesterday.
  18. Jesus Christ...from the trib Amphibious Assault ships...like the Bataan...also carry landing craft...the kinds of heavily armored vehicles (LVT's, LCAC's) which can travel either on shallow water or even land, and are designed to be able to go from the ocean up onto beaches and travel for a ways. In other words, that sort of resource could have evacuated thousands. They're still sitting there.
  19. QUOTE(Greg The Bull Luzinski @ Sep 4, 2005 -> 07:51 AM) I would not be the least bit offended if Ozzie pull out the "Sunday Special" line up for this game at Boston since several of the players are not making the trip. I would like to sweep Detroit and beat Boston. However I worry about 2 flights in 24 hours wearing on the everyday players. So lets hope Ozzie saves the Sunday special line up with Gload, Timo, Blum and the rest of th B-Team for Monday. The question is...would you rather beat Boston or Detroit? Personally...I don't think I'd complain about either, but if I had to pick, I'd pick the win over the 1st place team in the AL East. Every time you beat them, it makes them think a little bit more about you when you meet them in the playoffs.
  20. QUOTE(56789 @ Sep 3, 2005 -> 10:14 PM) During the Clinton years FEMA never had to deal with anything HALF as big as this project. Of course not. But during the time that our current head of FEMA, Michael Brown, spent trading horses for some Arabian company before he was fired (for being an "unmitigated, total disaster")...he never had to deal with anything 1/6000000th the size of this. At least that guy had to deal with Northridge and the Mississippi floods. (He got the job because he was the college roommate of Bush's former campaign aide and 1st FEMA director, Joe Allbaugh, who left to found a consulting company who's sole job was to teach other companies how to make money off the Iraqi reconstruction)
  21. QUOTE(santo=dorf @ Aug 31, 2005 -> 04:57 PM) Not a fan of Ivan Rodriguez? Hmph, I'd have guessed it was Reyes, with the Metropolitans.
  22. QUOTE(AirScott @ Sep 1, 2005 -> 03:13 PM) well you have to score runs to win (obviously), and it's rare you score a run by taking a walk. so player B. Yeah, this statement's a bit out there. There is a reason why the phrase "The dreaded leadoff walk" exists. It's rare you Drive in a run by taking a walk. It's not rare that you score a run by taking a walk.
  23. QUOTE(ChiSoxyGirl @ Sep 3, 2005 -> 10:15 PM) Really? He took me through the entire lots' inventory that was under and right up to my price range. Drove three cars, only one of which mildly approached my spending limit. I do think that it helped though, that I came in with quotes from other dealers, and a taking no s*** attitude. Got a better car than I was initially looking for and spent less than I was thinking of spending. Quotes from other dealers are a good thing, because you can tell them what someone else is offering as a method of pushing the price down...sometimes. Do not put all of your cards on the table first. If you have a quote from another dealer...hold onto it and don't put it out first. Once the dealer you're talking to makes an offer on the vehicle...take the better offer of the 2 and use it to try to talk down the price on the other one.
  24. This WaPo piece will probably shape the discussion for the next 24 hours. You know what the best news in that piece may very well be? The fact that someone finally turned to the guy who had FEMA running so damn well during the Clinton years and got him back involved.
  25. QUOTE(Ozzie Montana @ Sep 3, 2005 -> 06:51 PM) HAHA, It's interesting that these game threads are getting shorter. Nice win Sox. Keep it coming tomarrow. Of course they have been...I've been in Wyoming/Montana for 2 weeks.
