QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Apr 6, 2018 -> 07:47 PM) What exactly are we spending all our money on then? You’re against Machado, you’re against elite relievers. Do you want to overpay for a bunch of B free agents or simply go young across the board? The Kimbrel fan again stressing this point - I spent what, 4 years, saying the White Sox needed to go young across the board, probably longer. Being able to sign one or two of these big guys and add them into the mix in a very talented franchise...that is why we needed to go young across the board. We've already done that, this offseason will be the time to strike with a big piece or two.

Should the Sox attempt to extend some of their talent?

QUOTE (BlackSox13 @ Apr 6, 2018 -> 07:39 PM) I wouldn't extend Abreu or Avi until seasons end. Last offseason at the start of December I was saying either extend them now or trade them. After watching how last offseason played out, I'm not so sure any more, that call may have been wrong and I think 2k5 may have a point in this thread Yeah they could continue putting up strong seasons, but decent seasons could still leave them hanging out at the end of the FA market after 3 or 4 other guys take the remaining money. Goldschmidt is a FA the same year as Abreu, so is Smoak, so he might well be the 3rd 3b on the market and the oldest of them. Other teams might blow their money on that lefty starter at the front of Boston's rotation. If he stays healthy, the best OF on the market could be Adam Eaton. And if a team like the Yankees or Dodgers decides to keep their powder dry in 2020...in 2021 this dude named Mike Trout becomes a free agent, and he won't turn 29 until the middle of the next season, so good lord imagine that contract. There's a nonzero chance that where this market is going, these guys deals wind up unusually depressed compared to what it would take to extend them right now. -
QUOTE (TaylorStSox @ Apr 4, 2018 -> 02:28 PM) In fairness to Sweeney, he had one of the prettiest swings I've ever seen, on any level. It's not hard to see why people were excited about him. Some guys just don't pan out. It happens to more prospects than those who make it, in literally every single organization. Fangraphs also had Sweeney putting up 6 WAR between 2008-2009. That's not bad either.

I'm not squeamish about the money next year. IMO that was the point of the rebuild. So I'll be the first to say in this thread that this is the piece I want. Kimbrel.

QUOTE (Replacement Level Poster @ Apr 4, 2018 -> 08:17 PM) Wonder what the organization’s internal calendar is on Engel May 15th? Wonder what happens if Cordell struggles at Charlotte? Tilson? Leury should get first shot after Engel.

Checking in on the stats, nice to see good results out of the gate for Fulmer. They kept saying all spring that the biggest thing he needed to do was develop some trust in his stuff and attack rather than nibbling, and every time he gets good results that will push him in that direction.

Thanks. Today was the first day I was a little better on bench, I'm guessing either the nerve thing or the strain and I can't quite tell which, so a combination of going easy and gradually building back up hopefully will work.
-
QUOTE (RockRaines @ Apr 3, 2018 -> 10:22 AM) My uneducated guess is a nerve issue. Have you been rolling and stretching? I get weakness like that in my left shoulder sometimes and it just need rest, stretching and back rolling. I don't know what is meant by rolling, but normal stretching routine hasn't changed anything.

Since someone revived this... For the past week I seem to have bizarrely lost 10% of the strength in my right arm tricep. It doesn't hurt, I just all of a sudden in one arm can't lift as much as I previously could. I've dropped about 40 lb on bench and tricep overhead presses - like the difference between 200 and 160. I have no idea why. Bicep exercises are normal, it only hits me as weak on a select few exercises Any guesses?

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Apr 2, 2018 -> 04:51 PM) And yet that’s the prism eveything is looked at today...especially if these tariffs are imposed by China. They’re specifically targeting his base (including EU)...Harley-Davidson WI, bourbon whiskey (TN/KY), farming/agriculture (numerous states, especially Heartland and Rust Belt.) Do you think he would still go after Amazon if Washington (state) had voted for him...? Or Howard Schultz from Starbucks didn’t criticize Trump at every opportunity? Heck, the GOP seems to be actively courting a “culture war” with WA, OR, CA and Hawaii. Hollywood. Liberals. Elites. Silicon Valley minus Peter Thiel (of course, tax policy runs counter.) Net neutrality. Sanctuary cities. I agree, the tarriffs imposed by china have a huge influence on the culture war in starbucks at Harley Davidson Bourbon farming company teacher protests purple monkey dishwasher.

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Apr 2, 2018 -> 09:07 AM) Teacher protests last month in WV. Today, Oklahoma and Kentucky. Next up, Arizona. Where are Trump and DeVos?...four states that voted for him. Not to mention all the agricultural export states like Iowa soon to be hit by Chinese tariffs on pork, soybeans, sorghum, etc. Blue wave, baby! Donald Trump and Betsy Devos should not be involved in the least in teacher pay protests in various states just because the states voted for him at the national level.

QUOTE (IowaSoxFan @ Mar 30, 2018 -> 03:46 PM) Because you have options in the OF, he will be a FA just as the Sox window is opening, he is a poor defender, and he could pull back multiple pieces that could be contributors to the Sox next playoff team. The Sox are not going to be able to extend everyone so they are going to have to pick and choose, and Avi probably needs to go for the Sox to realize some sort of return on investment for him and keep payroll open to add in a spot where the Sox may need FA help in their contention window. Avi was an above average defender during 2017 by most metrics. -

QUOTE (iWin4Ron @ Mar 30, 2018 -> 02:12 PM) MLB is pretty good about it, yeh there's more teams turning to prospect mode, but not at the extent of resting their star players on purpose. NHL I admitedly do not know about. NFL I don't see a problem of resting players ... every season most teams have a chance to surprise and compete. NBA there is 1-3 teams that have a chance and the rest of the field tanks and an incredible amount of star players rest for no reason other than to tank. Teams actively try to lose (This doesn't happen in other sports) where they punish players for playing good. The whole NBA is a joke from the top down. I feel sorry for pure NBA fans, but no one should be touching this product until they make serious changes. What's worse, resting star players on purpose or what the Marlins did this offseason? Anyone remember the "Suck for Luck" campaign in the NFL? And now teams are getting a lot better at hording draft picks a-la the Browns and Bills... -

QUOTE (iWin4Ron @ Mar 30, 2018 -> 01:56 PM) Seriously tho, how can management not fix this glaring issue that has ruined the league? Some of the suggestions in this thread are terrible, but it can't be that difficult to not incentivize trying to be the #1 loser... Except it's happening in every league I pay attention to (I don't know the NFL draft). -
QUOTE (CaliSoxFanViaSWside @ Mar 30, 2018 -> 12:44 PM) First, Moustakas broke out in HR's last year but has had better seasons probably 2 others. Second, Davidson gives credit to the same guy that helped Konerko assistant hitting coach Mike Gellinger . http://www.dailyherald.com/sports/20170805...hanged-my-swing One big difference is that Moustakas, when he came up pre-injury, was a plus defender at 3b. When a guy is a strong defender, that can buy the guy a longer time to overcome struggles with the bats. Davidson needs to be a strong all-around producer with the bats this season, because a low .700s OPS poor defensive 3b, or a low .700s OPS DH or a low .700s OPS bat off the bench that isn't very versatile, none of those would be worth a roster spot in 2019 when this team should be taking its leap forwards.

QUOTE (soxfan49 @ Mar 30, 2018 -> 09:45 AM) At that point, you're done waiting obviously, but again, if this year isn't going to be a contending one, why not give him one last chance? It can't hurt. If he sucks, so what? But maybe they find something and he can contribute for a few years if not for a long time. This season absolutely. You're talking to the person on this page who was probably the loudest and most obnoxious advocate of "play the kids!" this offseason every time someone suggested that Moustakas or Morrison or someone like that hit a lot of home runs last year and should be signed. Davidson was one of those kids we needed to play. We need to find a couple regulars outside of the huge talents we brought in last year. Here's Davidson's chance to be one of those. He needs to walk more and put the ball in play more this year. Good start. Let me see an .850 OPS and I'll happily give him the DH slot going into next year.
-
QUOTE (GreenSox @ Mar 30, 2018 -> 09:29 AM) 2017 was Davidson's first major league season. This idea that young players must produce immediately and will take only minor steps back once hitting the majors, or else they aren't any good is loopy. Sure a few prosper immediately, but most don't. He's also 27. If he puts up another low .700s OPS this year, how many years are you going to wait for him?
-
He was more selective at the plate in the minor leagues than he was in the major leagues last year. I would certainly want to develop him to bring that back out. If a guy can't take a walk, then even if he has good power, he's not going to do much damage because people won't throw him balls over the plate.
-
QUOTE (Wanne @ Mar 29, 2018 -> 07:37 PM) lol...I was just talking about that game with my Dad...thinking we'd be unstoppable. As for Davidson...nice to see and I really don't think this is an abomination or anything. This is really the first year that he can just relax and hit and not look over his shoulder anymore...or whether he's going to get sent down. Good for him. He'll have his tough days...but honestly I'll be disappointed if he doesn't slam 35 at least. He just looks so much more comfortable at the plate. I want to see him take walks more than hit dingers. The dingers will come, I want to see him back to having a normal amount of patience at the plate. He does that and we're talking a solid hitter.
