  1. QUOTE (Hatchetman @ Dec 6, 2016 -> 09:20 AM) new fangraphs article on Giolito. http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/why-the-nat...-lucas-giolito/ QUOTE (Buehrle>Wood @ Dec 6, 2016 -> 09:29 AM) Well that was uninspiring for him If people truly believe the things they've said about the White Sox being good at developing pitchers, then a guy who has strong stuff but hasn't yet translated that into results would still be an extraordinary get for the White Sox. The question is, do we have confidence in the org turning stuff into pitching?
  2. QUOTE (ChiSox59 @ Dec 5, 2016 -> 11:59 PM) Strange way to analyze the deal Chris Sale was a 13th pick, so turning pick 13 into pick 16 and an international signing seems fair to me.
  3. QUOTE (coco1997 @ Dec 5, 2016 -> 01:56 PM) Seems like a total Cubs signing just waiting to happen. I would be surprised if the White Sox weren't at least interested based on their pursuit of Tanaka.
  4. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Dec 5, 2016 -> 01:29 PM) You a have mentioned many times Lawrie ' s tendency to miss a lot of games. Salado who actually is the older player has this same issue does he not? They are trading Frazier, so there will be openings for both. I'll be happier and believe it when I see it.
  5. QUOTE (ChiSox59 @ Dec 4, 2016 -> 06:46 PM) Read an article last week that made it seem like he is healthy and will be ready for ST. Here's that article. I'm not outraged by Lawrie getting 1 more year. I get the point, it bugs me a little - if things with him are bad enough that they even started talking about cutting him there's a reason why and that reason probably isn't just baseball, but he is fairly cheap depth and this deal is movable. What will frustrate me is if Lawrie is playing 2b in April and Saladino is on the bench because you've got to play the vets to win. If he's healthy enough to be playing baseball at that time, he needs to be in the lineup just to see if we can turn him into a starter somewhere. He's exactly the kind of guy we need to be playing - some talent, not sure if he can harness it long term or not. Having a few guys like that succeed is a huge step towards rapidly solving the problem of this organization being so barren in talent.
  6. QUOTE (2005thxfrthmmrs @ Dec 3, 2016 -> 01:23 AM) They are rebuilding. What rat's ass you give about them resigning Lawrie for $3.5M? I actually mind this one a bit more than the Garcia one because it would be nice to see how Saladino does in a full season at 2b. That said, we should have an opening at 3b that either of them could take, but that would require Hahn to make a correct move.
  7. QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Dec 3, 2016 -> 05:27 AM) Then I have no problem asking for this for Eaton. Spelling his name correctly?
  8. QUOTE (hi8is @ Dec 2, 2016 -> 11:35 PM) Or we could pick up this Erik Johnson fellow, whom was also non-tendered. Didn't he just have the TJS?
  9. QUOTE (Ro Da Don @ Dec 2, 2016 -> 11:58 PM) 1 WAR = an 8 million dollar salary in the current MLB marketplace. Avisail Garcia just got paid 3 million dollars. He got paid what he's been worth thus far. This move doesn't break the bank and it isn't taking the DH spot away from some super talented prospect. So, he's been worth -1.4 fWAR, so I think he owes the White Sox $13 million. Anyway, if Avi wasn't a White Sox player, I'd have no problem with this. He's a guy who has some talent, the White Sox should be signing cheap, scrap heap trash from other teams to fill in gaps after they trade away the guys they need to trade away. So I'll make the sarcastic opening remark, but yeah I won't complain much. Has anyone actually ever plotted up things like "Exit velocity" and "angle" versus actual performance? Because I've seen this cited a bunch the last 2 years and then it seems like you wind up with guys like Avi Garcia getting cited with that as a hopeful sign when they're actually trash.
  10. So has anyone been able to look at whether this is a guaranteed contract?
  11. Somewhere in here there's a line about people who complained about how unpleasant it was to be forced to vote for the lesser of two evils, winding up vaporized after the greater of two evils wins.
  12. QUOTE (bighurt574 @ Dec 2, 2016 -> 06:10 PM) Perhaps, at least if you go by last year's numbers. Eaton just doesn't have the same star quality or ceiling as McCutchen (who is still just 30). That shouldn't really matter, but I still can't see a franchise cleaning out a strong farm system for Eaton (though he's certainly worth more than McCutchen). Might as well go after Sale if you're willing to give all that up. Couple other things worth thinking about from the Nats perspective.... The Nats may not care as much about years 3-5 of Eaton's deal as they do about maximizing years 1-2. A guy worth 6 WAR in each of years 1-2 is worth more to them than a guy putting up 4 WAR 5 straight years, because they're going to lose Harper after 2018 so they have only a 2 year window. The Nats also have a strong RF right now, so you also have to ask yourself who will do a better job for them in CF. Eaton was a weak CF in 2014 and a strong RF. Cutch was an average CF in 2015 and terrible in 2016. If you're betting on him recovering his all-star form, I'd bet on Cutch as more likely to be a solid CF than Eaton, if I had some idea of waht hit him in 2016.
  13. QUOTE (ChiSox59 @ Dec 1, 2016 -> 10:18 PM) I just puked in my mouth. That was the appropriate response. It would be a terrible move for the White Sox. But if people want to insist they're going to compete right now, then at least look at what it would really take.
  14. QUOTE (iWin4Ron @ Dec 1, 2016 -> 07:39 PM) I'm on the bangwagon of trading Eaton at this all time high value. He should be a great piece for a competiting team so it works out well for both ends. With how long he's under control I genuinely hesitate to move him, really did impress last year...but one thing that others have noted that does worry me with him is how he'll take to playing on a rebuilding team that has genuinely no shot and after some of his friends have been traded. He's a guy that Arizona let go because they didn't like his attitude, the White Sox benched him at least once for not listening to their staff...if they didn't think he could handle Sale being moved professionally and that it would hurt his numbers they'd have to move him also.
  15. QUOTE (WBWSF @ Dec 1, 2016 -> 10:10 PM) I'd rather have McCutcheon starting in center field for the White Sox than Tilson the next 2 seasons. If the team can get him from the Pirates for some common prospects, I would do it in a heartbeat. Starting Tilson in center over McCutcheon isn't rebuilding, it's nuts in my opinion. I bet Collins + Fulmer + Adams + Burdi puts you in the ballpark. If they're talking about Robles he's a top 10 guy and the White Sox have nothing close to that, but if you piled up 2 top 100 guys plus another first round pick from last year you at least aren't laughably far away. Nats could probably still beat that.
  16. QUOTE (CyAcosta41 @ Dec 1, 2016 -> 02:09 PM) I've thought (and perhaps hoped) all along that some of the smaller-market teams would get involved in the Sale derby, Pittsburgh foremost among them. The big-boys -- your Dodgers, Red Sox, Yank-mes, Rangers, and the like -- might WANT a true ace on a cost-controlled contract, but, face it, they don't truly NEED the cost-controlled aspect as much as some teams might. A smaller market team on the brink of true contention NEEDS the entire Sale package to compete. Meaning, in theory they will pay more for a NEED than someone else might pay for a WANT. I like the idea of the Pirates trading a veteran commodity that we don't necessarily want as a headliner, in order to load-up on ready for prime time (or nearly ready) primo prospects. I've thought all along that this could be a very best route to the proverbial "haul." Who knows if this is what the Bucs have in mind, but for the moment, I'm liking what I'm seeing. If the Pirates are looking to use Meadows in their OF, that seriously dents the package they could be able to offer for Sale. They aren't going to be able to give up both frontline starter candidates for Sale and still fill out their rotation. Meadows is a great Sale deal headliner because he's currently blocked. You can make something work with Meadows and one of those 2 starters as a headliner, you have an average at best deal for Sale if they say you get 1 of their 2 starters along with basically everything else they can offer.
  17. So, I saw someone pose this on Twitter about a week or two ago and I haven't yet seen a good answer. Trump isn't selling his company, his kids are still running it and they've made it clear they're going to cash in on his name. He owns properties around the world. They are even building more while cashing in on his election. So, there's a Trump hotel in Turkey. There's a trump hotel in Brazil. Manila, several in Indonesia, Bali, etc. What happens if one of these hotels or properties is blown up by a terrorist? Normally if there were a hotel explosion in Turkey the US would offer investigative support or something like that, but if the President's name is on it, doesn't that become an instant target? Would you expect the U.S. to not respond in that case? Hotels are generally pretty soft targets anyway, so yeah.
  18. So since the White sox don't count as the 15 smallest markets they would never receive a pick after the 1st, only after the 2nd?
  19. QUOTE (greg775 @ Nov 30, 2016 -> 03:34 PM) With all the tweets and gotcha moments in the campaign, isn't it obvious the public is fighting back against PC? We just elected a person who offended almost everybody imaginable on social media. People are sick of the PC stuff. Again, Trump offended everybody and the country elected him president yet we're just waiting for the next 'gotcha' tweet posting. Take heart Greg, the guy who ended that rally in DC shouting "Sieg Heil"s to the audience is holding an event on my campus next Tuesday. Your campaign against being PC is having great successes like that.
  20. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Dec 1, 2016 -> 10:42 AM) Hosmer should still get the money because of his age and defense. Cain, Moustakas, Duffy....at least those four. Then Wade Davis will get a deal similar to Robertson's. Of course, they wouldn't be able to afford to pay him $17+ million for one year, but they might work out a deal where he promises to turn it down (if he has seasons like 2014-15 and stays healthy) in order to sign a $50 million deal elsewhere. Hosmer's defense took a nose dive last season as did his bat. He has to have a much better year to get paid.
  21. QUOTE (bmags @ Dec 1, 2016 -> 08:59 AM) I don't see how dodgers can justify giving away all of their cheap near MLB talent for Sale after this CBA. QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Dec 1, 2016 -> 09:11 AM) They should also want to win while they have Kershaw (and in his prime). He can opt-out of his contract after the 2018 season. Obviously they shouldn't completely gut their system, but they are so deep that can add Sale and still have a solid farm system. And the new CBA will not prevent them from spending $250M+ regularly. If anyone can afford huge luxury taxes it's the Dodgers with their $300/year TV deal. The other side of it would be - they have an MVP candidate who has 2 years left pre arbitration, they have a number of other good young guys scattered around also...Sale bring a top 10 pitcher who is cost controlled for 3 years and is dramatically underpaid. The value of that to a team that could be fighting to get under the "upper tax" level or whatever they're starting to call it could be huge.
  22. QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ Dec 1, 2016 -> 10:20 AM) Mike Ferrin just tweeted it and I can't use twitter at work. It would be helpful in here. Here's what he's saying: Players turn down the QO, if a tax teams signs them then they forfeit their 2nd and 5th rounder. If a non tax team signs them they forfeit their 3rd rounder. This is where I've seen both but Ferrin says team losing the QO FA would receive a pick in between round 1-2 if the players gets a contract more than $50 million and would receive a pick after Competitive Balance Round B if players signs for less than $50 million. If a luxury tax team loses a QO free agent, they get a pick after 4th round. Well, if that's right then that undoes the post last night thinking about the Royals, because almost all their guys (maybe not Hosmer if he has a bad year?) will be in position to score $50 million deals. Frazier would be a "pick after the first round" kinda guy barring injury or collapse.
  23. Well then. Apparently playing Indiana while ranked #3 is not a particularly good decision this year.
  24. QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ Nov 30, 2016 -> 11:23 PM) User Actions Following Jayson StarkVerified account ‏@jaysonst Sources say every team will have a total bonus pool of about $5 million to sign foreign-born amateur players. And they can't exceed that cap This will help the White Sox but kind of sucks in general. So, leaves open the definition of amateur/professional in foreign leagues.
