QUOTE(Beltin @ May 22, 2006 -> 05:02 PM) That is all fine and good, but the bullpen still sucks. The White Sox have lost too many games that should have been victories thus far. I agree that if Garland starts to get back on his game (whatever that is), Vazquez avoids the big inning that has hit a few of his starts, and BA and Uribe start hitting at a more respectable level, this team will be tough to beat despite the weak bullpen. However, if this team is going to go far in the playoffs, something needs to get straightened out in the pen. Maybe those guys just haven't hit their stride, either, but I see the WS as short at least one quality RHP. Until the pen starts doing their job effectively with a high level of consistency, all those statistics comparing the 2005 pace and whatever else mean nothing. The fact is the WS faced two of the weaker hitting teams in the majors this past week and came out on the short end three times. The bullpen played a significant part in those losses. I'm not sure how Cotts didn't do his job yesterday. He induced a routine GIDP. He was left in to face a righty, which was not only a bad matchup, but was bad anyway because he's the cubs' best hitter recently. You put in Jenks right there and we're probably fine. Politte gave up an insurance run yesterday, but he's been better.

QUOTE(RockRaines @ May 22, 2006 -> 04:11 PM) Since when is going 30-20 a .500 team? 27-9 to 57-29 Yeah, I just caught that myself. Staying with the point....during the second half of may last year (May 14th through June 1st - 1 under), and at the end of the 1st half, we really limped along, so I like our chances of having a better first half record than last year.

* If we go 7-3 over our next ten games, we equal our 2005 record after 53 games. I don't see that as being impossible, but 7 of the 10 are on the road and all ten are against .500 or better teams. 6-4 is probably more realistic, but that would put us just 1 game back of last year. * Even playing well short of our potential, since the first two series losses and our 2-4 start, the White Sox have only lost two series since, 1 to Seattle on the West Coast trip and 1 to Tampa, where we never seem to win. * We are still on pace to win 105.5 games, even taking into account a 1-4 start, a DL stint by our best pitcher, inconsistency from Jon Garland, and putrid plate performances by Brian Anderson and Juan Uribe. A true testament to how unbelievably good this team will be when they put it all together. * from May 14th of 2005 (27-9) until the all-star break of that year (57-29) we were a .500 team. I'm looking forward to hopefully getting 60 wins by the all star break this year, and with being a 27-11 team in the past 38 games, we are well on our way! EDIT: Sorry, can't do math. We were actually 10 over in this stretch. * whereas August set up as our most brutal month in 2005, it's setting up as our easiest month this season, IMO August: @ KC 1-2 @ Tor 4-6 (looking softer than imagined) vs NYY 8-10 (we tend to handle Yanks here) vs Det 11-13 vs. KC 15-17 @ Min 18-20 @ Det 21-24 vs. Min 25-27 vs. TB 29-31 We get 4 days off in the dog days...and although detroit and @ min will be tough, that's a month we could easily go 17-10 or 18-9.

Bruce Levine speculates about Cubs suspensions
Greg Hibbard replied to BigSqwert's topic in The Diamond Club
wow, we must be talking to totally different Cubs fans. "It was nice to see some emotion from SOMEONE...." "I would've punched him" "It was worth whatever suspension to see that idiot get clocked" "At least a Cub player hit something..." "AJ started it with the shoulder" That's all I heard all weekend. -
The reason AJ got tossed is because another brawl would've broken out with him still behind the plate. Guaranteed. Not saying it's right. But that's the reason.

QUOTE(BigSqwert @ May 19, 2006 -> 02:10 PM) We'll get em tomorrow. You give up this easily? Tell you what, it's a nice day outside....flip off the TV and go enjoy the rest of your day rather than watching this OBVIOUS loss... :headshake -
Tell you what. Let's revisit this thread in August after Kenny Rogers has a 1-5 July and see where we're at at that point.

QUOTE(JackTalkThai @ May 19, 2006 -> 10:11 AM) So you honestly think that Detroit will go 58-64 from here on out? How exactly did you reason that? It sounds like uber-wishful thinking if you ask me. Yes. Yes, I do. Flat out, they are not a good enough team. And they will also not be able to fatten up against bad teams all year. Detroit's record: Against KC (10-28) - 4-0 Against Min (17-24) - 7-2 Against LAA (17-24) - 2-3 Against Sea (17-25) - 3-0 Against Bal (19-22) - 1-1 Against Cle (20-21) - 5-2 Against Tex (21-19) - 3-1 Against Oak (21-19) - 2-1 ------------------------------ Against Sox (26-14) - 0-3 So they've played exactly one team with a record of better than 2 games over .500 this year, and they went 0-3 against them. Combined record of opponents: 168-182 (.480) Yes, I know we've played similar bad teams. But the difference is: 1) Our best pitcher has missed his last two starts on the DL, and we are 0-2 with his subs. 2) Our record against teams more than 5 games over .500 - 5-1, three of them on the road. Lemme know when Detroit is capable of even WINNING A GAME against a real team.
-
I made a bet today that we finish more than 3 games better than Detroit. Easiest money I ever made. Detroit's an 85 win team, at best. They are playing OUT OF THEIR MINDS right now, and getting every single break. Meanwhile, the Sox are playing way below their capabilities and are still 12 over .500

Objectively speaking, is this a good bet?

Hmm, that is a good idea, I don't have a Hibby jersey -

I'm really just betting that for the next 300 abs, Crede will hit about .265. -

oh blum's not ridiculous...but getting a blum jersey this season would be -
PREFACE: I will not be rooting against Crede or the White Sox in any way, shape or form for the rest of the season. I am a diehard fan and my team and player loyalties come way before any fantasy or betting interest. That being said, I just couldn't pass this bet up. I bet my friend that Crede would finish the season at .284 or lower average-wise If he wins, I have to buy him a Crede jersey If I win, he has to buy me a Blum jersey (or something equally ridiculous) Putting aside what you HOPE will happen....good bet or bad bet?

I wonder where all those people are who claimed Garland would eventually settle down. I said it once, I'll say it again....last year was a great year for JG, but a lot of it was sort of fluky. His ERA and WHIP this year will be lower than they are now eventually, but they will be more along the lines of his career numbers, NOT what we saw last year. -

QUOTE(fathom @ May 16, 2006 -> 07:05 PM) That was last season. Their hitting, besides Gomes, has been pathetic this season. their roster hasn't really changed too much. So they went through a collective team slump for 6 weeks. It's not totally impossible, you know. Huff is a good hitter. Crawford is a good hitter. I'd take the Rays lineup over the current Flubs one. -

QUOTE(WHarris1 @ May 16, 2006 -> 07:02 PM) No s*** they won't, but getting shelled by a team that has slumped for a month and a half is not accpetable. If we were winning this game 10-6 against any other starter on their roster, this thread wouldn't have any such complaints. The Rays hit very well last season, and are known for hitting well and pitching like s***. -

QUOTE(WHarris1 @ May 16, 2006 -> 06:59 PM) 5 under and they are still last in their division and near the bottom of the AL. They are hitting .230 and have 6 runs in 5 innings. The Rays won't hit .230 all season. Big surprise. 2nd worst in the AL >>>>>> about 2/3rds of the NL. And they are miles above Kansas City. Tampa Bay has some major league talent, and we faced probably one of the 15 best starters in the league tonight. The way he's pitching, it was gonna be hard to put many runs up on the board. Big deal. We'll get em the next two nights. I still think Tampa could win 75 this year. -

QUOTE(WHarris1 @ May 16, 2006 -> 06:57 PM) And they are 8 games under .500, 2nd worst in the AL Whatever, 5 under and 8 under are not a whole lot different at this point in the season.
