  1. QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Dec 1, 2005 -> 06:54 PM) If Jon Garland had hit the open market this season, he would have been looking at a 6 or 7 year deal, with at least $10 million a year, probably more (maybe way more). The guy is a workhorse at the very least. A guy like Loiaza who is older, and puts up worse career numbers just got a 3 year deal at 7 million per season. Loiaza in the last 5 seasons has put up ERAs under 5, only twice. Even if Garland "regressed" to his form of the prior 3 seasons, he has averaged 200 innings and won double digits every year, in a hugely hitters ballpark... that would all add up to AT LEAST what Kris Benson after 04, probably more because teams would look at Jon's 05 season and think that they could bring him back to that. Hell Oakland just did that with Esteban, on much less evidence and potential of his ever returning to his incredible form. Garland is a $10 million pitcher at the VERY least in today's market. If he goes out in 06 and keeps his ERA under 4 again, we could be talking about a $15 million per year pitcher, on a long term contract, to a team like the Yankees, Red Sox, or whatever flavor of the month GM was overspending at the moment. I have a question: How will he be able to feed his family on $7 Million? How will he be able to have a roof over his head.
  2. SP: Mark Buehrle SP: Jose Contreras SP: Jon Garland SP: Freddy Garcia SP: Brandon McCarthy RP: Arnie Munoz RP: Orlando Hernandez RP: Bobby Jenks RP: Cliff Politte RP: Neal Cotts RP: Dustin Hermanson C: A.J. Pierzynski 1B: Paul Konerko 2B: Tadahito Iguchi 3B: Joe Crede SS: Juan Uribe RF: Jermaine Dye CF: Brian Anderson LF: Scott Podsednik DH: Jim Thome (just starting to sink in) C: Chris Widger IF: Bill Mueller IF: Pablo Ozuna OF: Timo Perez OF: Willie Harris Sign Frank Thomas to a small money deal with plenty of bonuses. Than when Frank is ready send Harris down or trade him. Release Vizcaino and trade Marte. Munoz will be fine as a lefty specialist. He deserves a 2nd chance in the bullpen where he belongs.
  3. QUOTE(SSH2005 @ Dec 1, 2005 -> 05:57 PM) To quote Hawk, "WHERE WOULD HE PLAY?!?" Besides, I think the Cubs are okay with Derrek Lee at first base. are you sure?
  4. QUOTE(JUGGERNAUT @ Dec 1, 2005 -> 12:28 PM) I think it is way too early to be singing the swan song. Thome gave Shapiro first crack to trade for him & Shapiro turned down the offer. The consensus around the league was that teams needed to see him in action in ST before making a decision. So no matter how we fans want to spin it Thome is a rehabing player coming off major surgery. That is not a sure thing. As for Kong he did not receive a clean bill of health either. A degenerative hip disorder is a significant risk. I would say no less significant than Crede's back disorder. The general consensus with Thomas is that he came back to soon. So we can assume I think that he is going to take more time for the bone to heal this time around. That suggests to me the earliest he would be able to play for any team is after the all-star break. Adding a healthy Thomas to the bench for the 2nd half would act like a mid-season trade. He might just be the best PH option in the game today when you consider his OBP. With the White Sox expected to add even more speed you can envision how Ozzie could use Thomas in the 2nd half. Consider 2005: Kong 575 AB's, Jurrasic 490 AB's, Thomas 105 AB's. That's not including the post season. If it's the same disorder that Ditka had then it would not be wise for the White Sox NOT to expect 575 AB's & another post-season out of Kong. It would be wise to trim that down to 450 AB. With respect to Thome he had 193AB's last year. Now I certainly don't want to rain on the White Sox off-season parade but this is the first time in his career he is coming back from a major injury & rehab. It would be wise as well to expect no more than 450 AB from him as well. Which means there is another 200AB available for Thomas. Aug has been this team's achilles heal for the past 5 yrs. Something always happens that tightens the screws on the White Sox. For Cleveland Aug has been the time to smell the roses. For two years in a row they have been amongst the best performers in Aug. So having Thomas as insurance for the 2nd half is a smart move for the White Sox to make. As long as KW doesn't say anything to offend Frank I think it's in the cards. right on the money. The reason Konerko's average was so low in the 1st half was because he played everyday because Gload was injured. He was the only guy who could play a legit 1st Base. If Konerko got more time off I think he would be better. Thome can still play 1st Base just fine. While Thomas wouldn't play in the field he would Pinch Hit and if Konerko or Thome had a night off he would be the guy playing. He would still get 200 At Bats which is close enough to what he would get if Thome wasn't here (Frank probably comes back in June anyways.)
  5. QUOTE(Rowand44 @ Dec 1, 2005 -> 11:47 AM) Here are the starting pitchers: RHSP: Paul Wilson (Team Option) Wade Miller Jon Garland Tomo Ohka Gil Meche Greg Maddux Jason Schmidt Jeff Suppan Rick Helling Brad Radke Kerry Wood (Mutual Option) Mike Mussina (Team Option) Cory Lidle Kelvim Escobar Joel Piniero arb? Chan Ho Park Jose Contreras Ryan Franklin Orlando Hernandez Jaret Wright (Team + Player Void options) Kip Wells Jason Marquis Vicente Padilla Adam Eaton Tim Wakefield (Annual Team Renew Option) LHSP: Ted Lilly Mark Redman Andy Pettitte Mark Mulder Barry Zito Doug Davis Randy Wolf Mark Buerhle (Team Option) David Wells Wilson Alvarez (Retired) Darrell May Eric Milton (Void Option) From the looks of that list he will be a rich man. He looks like the best SP on the market (assuming Mark Buehrle's Option is picked up and it will be). He will have a choice between money and being happy. I hope he would take less money like Buehrle would or Konerko would but for some reason I just have a bad feeling that he might not.
  6. QUOTE(Steff @ Dec 1, 2005 -> 07:08 AM) Forgive me.. kindof.. but I think I've said exactly that several times already. And, again, I don't know where you heard Frank and Kenny are "friends".. but aside from professional courtesy, they are not. "Friends" don't try to trade you away when they think their boss isn't looking... "friends" don't talk s*** about you to the media... and "friends" don't disclose personal rifts. Kenny has been nothing but UNPROFESSIONAL where Frank is concerned.. and was called on it a few years ago at Soxfest - - and admitted as much. Even before he was GM.
  7. QUOTE(Jimbo's Drinker @ Dec 1, 2005 -> 02:28 AM) If they are movies you like...they are not bad I am talking about B-Movies.
  8. QUOTE(Drew @ Dec 1, 2005 -> 01:48 AM) I concur on the lameness of this ruling. still who would be proud of going in as a Devil Ray.
  9. QUOTE(hammerhead johnson @ Nov 30, 2005 -> 04:37 PM) I'd need to find out a few more details about Joey Harrington's practice habits before coming to any conclusions. Maybe "Dre" is speaking on behalf of the team. Also, what has Bly done in the past to piss anyone off? Doesn't matter. You don't go rip a guy in public like that. Also Harrington has never had a question of work ethic or anything like that, he just hasn't had a good year.
  10. QUOTE(Punch and Judy Garland @ Nov 30, 2005 -> 04:11 PM) Listen, I feel the Eagles were in their right to deactivate and suspend Owens who was a horrible guy for the front office and McNabb to have to deal with. That being said, Dre Bly is getting a pass because the media hates Joey Harrington. What he said was terrible. I like Dre as a player a lot but what he said was not something you can defend. The kicker is the reaction. Over 50 percent of espn.commers feel Bly should NOT be suspended or even fined for his comments!!!!Take the words he used. Now I know that TO was suspended for the summation of his insubordination but if you look at the two incidents-what Bly said was truly worse. Since Harringotn is in limbo there-management is going to ignore it. Matt Millen is a joke for letting Bly get away with this and the sports fans in this country are a joke for thinking this is no big deal. I agree. T.O. never actually said McNabb sucks. He just said Favre was better. I don't care if it is your 3rd string QB you don't pull that kind of s***. Also I don't think all of this mess is Harrington's fault. He was actually pretty decent since he returned. The draft class over the past few years (exception of Roy Williams) sucked so far. I am not counting Mike Williams because he needs more time to develop.
  11. Steff, from what i have heard Reinsdorf is a very loyal guy. He showed it with Konerko by letting Kenny pay big bucks to keep him. Is he loyal enough to re-sign Frank even if there is a doubt in his mind about his health. Like maybe an incentive laden deal.
  12. QUOTE(Punch and Judy Garland @ Dec 1, 2005 -> 12:44 AM) well if Jermaine Dye in the left side of the infield happened, anything is possible! hell Frank plays shortstop and saves the game for Oakland with a defensive web gem against the Sox.
  13. QUOTE(SoxFan101 @ Nov 30, 2005 -> 11:25 PM) If Thomas signed with the A's how crazy would it be if he hit #500 against us. nothing shocks me against the A's.
  14. QUOTE(greg775 @ Nov 30, 2005 -> 11:38 PM) Some of you have said this already, but I think our doctors realize he's physically a long shot at best to come back. That said, now that we've won a World Series I wouldn't mind seeing him sign with the Cubs. The Cubs will never win a Series so they are no threat to our title, and it'd be great to see Frank whack a lot of homers in the small Wrigley. My guess though is he's done.
  15. QUOTE(drowninginflame @ Nov 30, 2005 -> 11:33 PM) I made the biggest mistake not getting my pair, anyone have any ideas where I might be able to get them or if anyone has extras I want them. Thanks Paulie Paulie Paulie ebay? Stub Hub maybe?
  16. QUOTE(Kalapse @ Nov 30, 2005 -> 11:25 PM) Nice try. whoops i meant to say isn't. People say strange things when you only get 2 hours of sleep the night before.
  17. QUOTE(Gene Honda Civic @ Nov 30, 2005 -> 11:26 PM) Rightfielders with .322 OBPs do grow on trees who is a better right fielder in this free agent market. I am not saying Burnitz was great but for the money they were paying him you can do a whole lot worse. Plus they have other needs. If i were a cubs fan I would rather have Burnitz in Right and Juan Pierre in center and/or Rafael Furcal at short than some overpayed crappy outfielder and none of those guys.
  18. QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Nov 30, 2005 -> 11:09 PM) Just as with Carlos Lee, the question is not whether or not Anderson or Owens could outproduce Dye. The question is whether Owens and $4.4 million or so could outproduce Dye. I can think of several places where that cash could be useful...not the least of which is giving another long term deal to #56. but why fix what isn't broken? That is exactly the lesson the cubs will learn when they don't resign Jeromy Burnitz. He put up decent numbers for decent money. He was a great guy in the clubhouse, why mess with that. Why pay more for somebody who you don't know will be as good in the clubhouse and outproduce him by all that much.
  19. Also Tyrese an Eva Mendes are very good. Tyrese i think is a great actor. He has an energy that was obvious in Four Brothers and 2 Fast 2 Furious.
  20. QUOTE(qwerty @ Nov 30, 2005 -> 10:34 PM) Who the f*** does what i put in bold? Yes, most people expect the same thing when they watch 2 fast 2 furious and boyz in the hood. I know i did. morons do. And the people a ton of movie critics who trashed the movie expected it to have a brain and be smart.
  21. QUOTE(SleepyWhiteSox @ Nov 30, 2005 -> 10:35 PM) Wait, you're calling that a bad movie? The director was nominated for an Oscar for that one, I think. Speaking of Oscar...maybe it's my Marisa Tomei crush, but the bad movie by that name starring Stallone would be one of my choices for bad movies that I really enjoyed. My favorite Marisa Tomei movie: "What the f*** is going on here, Vinny? You f***ing up this case or what?" "A little? You've been thrown in jail twice."
  22. QUOTE(SleepyWhiteSox @ Nov 30, 2005 -> 10:35 PM) Wait, you're calling that a bad movie? The director was nominated for an Oscar for that one, I think. Speaking of Oscar...maybe it's my Marisa Tomei crush, but the bad movie by that name starring Stallone would be one of my choices for bad movies that I really enjoyed. no Boyz n the Hood was a great movie. One of the best I have ever seen. However if you go into 2 Fast 2 Furious expecting this really smart movie like Boyz n the Hood you will hate it. However if you go into it for great action scenes, cars going really fast, and to be entertained than you will like it.
  23. QUOTE(AddisonStSox @ Nov 30, 2005 -> 09:21 PM) Woa! Two mild shockers within the past eight hours. Personally, I'm glad the Padres were able to keep him in San Diego. That will make for a lot of happy San Diegins... San Diegoans... San Diegoens... What does San Diego mean again? I am sorry I can't resist. Oh I love Anchorman.
  24. QUOTE(Rowand44 @ Nov 30, 2005 -> 10:21 PM) Wilkerson imo should and will be a 25-30 homer guy, he strikes out a ton and ideally should not be at the top of the order. He does walk a lot and that's really the only reason that people think of him as a top of the order hitter, he's not the kind of guy the sox are thinking as of a two hitter, they want a speedy leadoff type who can bunt and move guys over when necessary. he can do it. I have seen him do it and he is very good at it.
  25. QUOTE(Sox Hustler @ Nov 30, 2005 -> 09:08 PM) Oh ok, that makes sense. I'll think of some movies later. a better example would be Boyz n the Hood because Singleton did direct both of those movies.
