  1. QUOTE(Dick Allen @ Sep 2, 2006 -> 06:50 PM) Not bad guiding a team to the best record in the AL with the 26th highest payroll in baseball. It's no World Series!
  2. QUOTE(Dick Allen @ Sep 2, 2006 -> 06:49 PM) Then Tom Kelly should be the manager of the White Sox. He has 2 WS titles, so he must be twice the manager Ozzie is. What's Kelly's winning percentage?
  3. QUOTE(Dick Allen @ Sep 2, 2006 -> 06:40 PM) He won a division, manager of the year and had the best record in the AL in 2000. And he did it with a payroll far from the highest in the division. Jerry Manuel never won anything more than a division.
  4. QUOTE(fathom @ Sep 2, 2006 -> 06:33 PM) Jerry Manuel was fired for a team that showed more intensity than this team has over the last 2 months. Jerry Manuel never won anything.
  5. $40-$45M for this rotation. That's the kind of money you pay pitchers to win games for you, not just keep it close for the offense. That's the problem.
  6. Just remember, whoever McCarthy replaces in the rotation this year, we're stuck with next year.
  7. QUOTE(southsideirish71 @ Sep 1, 2006 -> 11:55 PM) So what do you suggest, a 1 year contract with team options for the next 2 years on the no suckage clause in his contract. Sure Contreras's agent is a moron. He would of done it. So what other ptichers would you have plugged in there after this year. You realize that Freddy fastball is throwing 86 and is in the last year of his contract next year. We might be wise to ditch him. So how much of our rotation do you want to replace, and with what. The point isn't who would you replace Contreras with, it's that they might've signed their new Jamie Navarro.
  8. QUOTE(southsideirish71 @ Sep 1, 2006 -> 11:42 PM) Anyone that suggests that we shouldnt of signed the Count after his dominant last year, for the money he is making needs therapy. When did you think it was a bad idea to sign him, after his great start this year, or when you were real smart and it was after his DL stint. The guy is hurt, give me a break. Three years is a LONG time for a pitcher as "experienced" as Contreras. Williams was thinking more with his hear than his head which is somewhat understandable given the World Series.
  9. QUOTE(Steff @ Sep 1, 2006 -> 11:39 PM) It's obviously you are happy with nothing... so why are you here? Wrong again. At least you're consistent.
  10. QUOTE(santo=dorf @ Sep 1, 2006 -> 11:35 PM) Huh? Garland had one year of arbitration left. Contreras had one year left on his 4 year deal he signed with the Yankees BACK BEFORE the 2003 season with the Sox payin $6 million You said the same things about Jeremy Reed when he was traded for Garcia. I'm not saying Young won't being anything, but how exactly would he fit in the Sox's current plans? Guillen won't play Anderson everyday, and Pods is always out there. We just called up Sweeney, Owens is on the way, and Fields has been seeing some OF time. Dye will ahve his option picked up (a whopping $6 million. STUPID KW wrecklessly spending the chairman's money and Mack is signed for a few more years. You're happy with the Vazquez deal and the Contreras signing Dorf?
  11. QUOTE(southsideirish71 @ Sep 1, 2006 -> 11:34 PM) Contreras is hurt. His back has a problem. He went from throwing 97 consistantly to now he cant hit 93 consistantly. He also went from predominantly over the top, using side arm as an out pitch for the sweeping slider and running fastball to predominately a side arm pitcher who doesnt follow through. I am surprised that they havent done a put up or shut up on Jose's health. If you think he is just done then I suggest you review reality. Next spring, poof he will be back to hitting mid 90s with great stuff. Back injuries to a pitcher, epsecially a power pitcher can just shut them down. Sources that he's hurt?
  12. QUOTE(Steff @ Sep 1, 2006 -> 11:29 PM) Hysterical.. you give Kenny a pass.. someone that sat in an office while the players played their asses off.. but you won't give the actual guys that did all the work some slack. What are you talking about? If Williams didn't assemble the team, you'd have no World Series memories.
  13. QUOTE(southsideirish71 @ Sep 1, 2006 -> 11:26 PM) Oh sweet god. Garland was a smart signing. So was contreras. I didnt like the Vazquez thing, not because of keeping Chris Young but it was to flip Chris Young for something better than Vaz. The only thing I wish KW did at the break was to pick up Brady Clark as a 4th OF to platoon in LF and provide a real backup for Anderson in CF instead of having to use a corner OF in center all the time. Why was the Contreras signing smart?
  14. QUOTE(Steff @ Sep 1, 2006 -> 11:26 PM) Oh, don't worry...your pp is longer. I have a WS memory. The payoff was worth it. Who are you?
  15. QUOTE(santo=dorf @ Sep 1, 2006 -> 11:18 PM) GMAFB! It was only a matter of time before one of the chairman's cronies came on this board and talked about financials. Look at how the rotation performed last year. For 2006, the only guy whose salary is questionable is Vazquez. The Yanks threw a ton of money at him, and the Sox are getting some from Arizona to help cover the costs. Supposedly KW tried to trade Garcia in the offseason, Garland is only making $7 or $8 million this year IIRC, and Contreras got a below market value after the way he pitch from August on in 2005. Isn't it time for you to start another "If the sox miss the playoffs, should KW be fired?" thread Wealz? Last year the Sox took off after that thread. So you're ok with having Contreras locked in through 2009? Hey, KW should be the GM for however long he wants to be after winning a World Series, but some of his moves since deserve to be questioned.
  16. QUOTE(Steff @ Sep 1, 2006 -> 11:15 PM) The investment was in place last year. The return was well worth the expense. It was not in place last year, you're wrong. At the end of last year they were obligated to 2 years of Contreras and Garland. Today, they are obligated to 8 years od Contreras, Garland, and Vazquez. Not too mention relinquishing a very good prospect in Chris Young to get Vazquez.
  17. QUOTE(Steff @ Sep 1, 2006 -> 11:08 PM) I know this is tonight specific... But Cintron and Mac pitch now...? Look at the starters' ERA this year. Are you saying Cintron should never start at SS? Come on you're smarter than that ....
  18. If I'm not mistaken, the Sox have the second highest paid rotation in MLB and aside frpm Contreras' stint on the DL earlier this year, no one has mussed a start. Nice return on investment, Kenny.
  19. QUOTE(fathom @ Sep 1, 2006 -> 10:20 PM) Ozzie has a him against the world attitude right now...and it's hurting our team. You're wrong. What's hurting the team is the high-priced starting rotation.
  20. QUOTE(valponick @ Aug 31, 2006 -> 04:18 PM) He brought in McDougal one batter too late, he pinch hit for the wrong person in the bottom of the 10th just to name 2 things. He doesn't really seem to have a clue. How do you know he brought MacDougal in one batter too late?
  21. QUOTE(valponick @ Aug 31, 2006 -> 04:14 PM) Ozzie is trying to manage this team right out of the playoffs, I really wouldn't mind seeing him gone next year. What did he do this time? He brought the Great Brandon McCarthy in . . .
  22. QUOTE(fathom @ Aug 28, 2006 -> 12:06 PM) I think it has more to do with Ozzie/KW not wanting to have to get rid of someone like Ozuna or Gload. Well that would count as a PLUS for having Mackowiak in center. QUOTE(Kalapse @ Aug 28, 2006 -> 12:04 PM) Why does anyone need to share time with Anderson? Perhaps Williams feels Anderson is the type of player who can play everyday for you and Mackowiak is capable of playing CF once a week, I certainly believe this to be true. Anderson is the position player jewel of the farm system for the moment and is incredibly important to the team's future. That's why he should be handled with care. As far as Mackowiak goes, he's either good enough to play center or he isn't. It's that simple.
  23. QUOTE(fathom @ Aug 28, 2006 -> 11:53 AM) I can't believe that you think Ozzie has no say about who is, and isn't, on this team. He probably does have a say, but he isn't accountable for who is on the team. Kenny Williams must think the pros of Mackowiak playing center outweigh the cons or he would have found someone else to share time with Anderson.
  24. QUOTE(Tony82087 @ Aug 28, 2006 -> 11:32 AM) Yes he is. He is not accountable on how much the manager plays Mackowiak. Im sure when Williams acquired Mack, he did not envision a platoon in CF. If Mack was in a center maybe once a week, there is no problem(at least for me) When Mack is getting more time than Anderson, that is when something is wrong. If Mackowiak isn't good enough to play 2 or 3 times a week in center, he isn't good enough to play center at all. Kenny Williams dealt Guillen this hand.
  25. QUOTE(Dick Allen @ Aug 28, 2006 -> 10:59 AM) The GM basically said Sandy Alomar Jr. was the coaching staff's idea. I agree the buck stops with KW, but if Ozzie is greatly opposed to a change and won't embrace it, it wouldn't make much sense to make that change. Kenny Williams is accountable for the roster and Mackowiak is the ONLY other CF'er.
