For those of you familar with Illinois football, how much of a role was expected for the frosh (LB I think), who is accused of shooting off his gun at some bar, and has since been suspended for now. I think Erique Robertson was the name I saw. He is being charged, so it sounds like he may be in some trouble. -

QUOTE(whitesoxfan101 @ Feb 5, 2008 -> 12:04 PM) You guys are a way better football program than Kansas, and you had a great year, I wouldn't consider it too big of an issue. As for Juice Cruz's post........I'll take the words of the people who told me them over yours. That's fine I heard it FROM "schmooge" and was with his assistant coach when Cuenzo Martin texted him with the news that "schmooge" is a Boilermaker. He was a Purdue lean for a while at that point, "Kay Kay" the center on his state championship team is committed to Purdue as well for football next year. Hummel & Martin are close with E'twaun and Purdue had offered both which was another plus, and most of all his mother liked the distance to travel and see him play the most. He was interested in Illinois, but was not kept from going there due to a lack of a offer. -

QUOTE(whitesoxfan101 @ Feb 3, 2008 -> 12:46 AM) Well, I guess your technically right since a few people were stupid enough to think Illinois still had a shot at Rose when Moore verballed to Purdue (late summer before signing day, August I believe). But Illinois could have easily had Moore, but said no, and thus Moore verballed to and visited Purdue. The Moore debacle is a big reason Illinois changed their entire recruiting strategy to the first come, first serve offer system now in place. If Illinois had the same recruiting system the last couple years that it has now, Moore would have had a white jersey on today, but nope, gotta keep a spot open for Rose. That entire thing was made dumber by the fact that the Eric Gordon rumors had been going on for months when Illinois declined a potential Moore verbal. I know everybody anywhere near Illinois with any sources (right down to even me), thought Gordon was still coming to Champaign since we weren't yet aware he was a liar, but it would have been wise to take an insurance policy. Again not true. They withheld an offer at the time fine, but "schmooge" was not going to committ if he had an offer in hand from Illinois at that point. To say they would have been in a stronger position to possibly get him, ok, but it's not the case that with the offer he was going to Illinois, and they lost out waiting on Rose/Gordon. Just not the case! -

QUOTE(whitesoxfan101 @ Feb 2, 2008 -> 08:22 PM) Boy, it's a good thing Bruce wouldn't take E'Twaun Moore because he wanted to leave that spot open for Rose or Gordon!!! Nice call, coach (10-12, 24 points today). Ugh, watching that team is torture, they finally get a good day at the line (30-40) and go 50 percent from the field for 75 points, and the defense forgets there is a game. Nice to see Bruce continue to NOT play Alexander as well, so that the awful at basketball Chester Frazier can continue to play. And want to laugh? Look at the old dude and the balding dude at the scorers table in that Erin Andrews picture. The looks of joy they have staring at EA are classic. NOt true I used to coach E'twaun and know his high school coaches all my life. He was not going to Illinois and was turned down due to Gordan. He was considering Illinois, but Purdue had an inside track for a while. Don't blame "ej" for missing out on "scmooge". -

QUOTE(Palehosefan @ Feb 3, 2008 -> 02:10 PM) Can't imagine any team not looking like s*** playing with their 3rd string PG. But yeah, this game is UUUUUUUUUUUGLY. Ty is vital to the Heels . He makes everything go much as Felton did for the '05 champs. Couple that with Bobby being down as the backup and UNC is very average if Ty is out . Q just isn't a 30 minute a game type of guy, maybe in a 3-5 minute spurt he is ok, but the only other option is Ginyard who is not a point guard at all. It doesn't look good for Ty playing againnst the Dookies, which is fine with me if there is any doubt. Error on the side of caution, just as he did earlier in the year when Ty was gimmoy. He is yoo importantfor any title hopes. -

QUOTE(Harvin4Heisman @ Jan 30, 2008 -> 05:21 PM) On recruiting. I have talked about this in another thread, but I know people who run HS BBall events. We are having one on the 16th of FEB at Welsh Ryan Arena. It starts at 7:00. Game on is Waukegan (Richmond) vs. Oak Park River Forest (Shumpert). Game two follows that game and features E Chicago Central (IND) (Angel Garcia) vs New Trier. I believe for you guys who are interested on top talent, there are close to EIGHT DI prospects playing in these two games. Call NU's box office for tickets I probably won't make it, but I've been to most of E. C. Central's games and they are in a bit of a lull right now, hopefully, they along with Angel will pick it up down the stretch to have a chance at defending their state title. -

QUOTE(ChWRoCk2 @ Jan 31, 2008 -> 11:01 AM) I saw it. Another win that they just came away with vs Iowa. For the most part the whole game they had a hangover from that win from Wisconsin. Played pretty awful, couldn't shoot the ball the whole game, but good enough to win. Purdue really has to get Nemanja Calasan more playing time, talking 6-9 junior who can hit a shot anywhere on the floor. Though Hummel is doing well. I got a feeling Illinois beats the Boilers in Champaign. Calasan seems like a big brute who struggles if he can't overpower someone. I'm fine with his limited role ( J. Johnson, more playing time to develop , YES) I'm a follower due to E'twaun Moore who I've known since his jr. high years coaching him. He has stepped up for them as their leading scorer in the past two games. Hummel and Martin I've seen play since they were Jr. high kids as well, and so far so good for the region trio. They are not going to just "show up" and beat anybody so Illinois has a chance for sure, but the Boilers have been growing by leaps and bounds and should only continue to improve with this young bunch, so hopefully they will roll when they visit Champign -

I was glad to see Purdue sneak one out, E'twaun, had a very nice game against Wisconsin, but I wasn't able to catch this Iowa game. Nice start in the big 11 for the young group of frosh for the Boilers. -

QUOTE(Jimbo's Drinker @ Jan 30, 2008 -> 08:56 PM) f*** Beasley is good. Billy Walker was pretty damn good too. Those two were enough, which was kind of a surprise to me, I thought Jackson would have been able to slow at least one of them up a bit. Great win for K. State, not that big of a lose in the grand scheme of things for Kansas. -

UCLA, UNC will stay strong or rise overall as well. -

QUOTE(whitesoxfan99 @ Jan 25, 2008 -> 02:56 PM) The 05 Carolina team was significantly better on the defensive end than this years version. That years version was top 10 in defensive efficiency. This team isn't top 40. I agree, but they were ripped for being soft on DEE. This years squad must show improvement, like the national championship team did in that area. They need a few more things to improve as well, but they are capable, hopefully they will get it done by tourney time. -

QUOTE(gbuk @ Jan 25, 2008 -> 02:45 PM) SOS numbers are pretty misleading, because when you play teams that are like 1-11 at that point in the season it totally takes away from a great team you played. I think it also takes into account the records of your opponents - opponents. So the 1-11 would also depend on the quality of teams they lost to, as to how much it would bring you down. I don't put too much into it though, just something to respond to debates such as "who has team A played compared to team B" type of discussions that people have. I will bring it up to a IU fan that last Sunday during our poker leauge was going off about Carolina losing to Maryland and saying that UNC hasn't played anybody and gets all this love while Indiana with one loss gets no credit after a much tougher schedule. Reality never gets in the way of some fans. -

The new strength of schedule numbers came out today. The teams of intrest in the last few discussions that are highly ranked are as follows. North Carolina #10 toughest schedule (19-1) UCLA #16 toughest schedule (16-2) Kansas #41 toughest schedule (18-0) Memphis #54 toughest schedule (18-0) and a surprise to me - Indiana #152 toughest schedule (17-1) Tennesee at (15-2 )has the #3 toughest schedule to date. and for the So. Illinois fans you might be (9-10), but it has been against quality #6 toughest to date. Illinois #21 toughest at (9-11) -

Palehose, your history is not too good..KU loves Bramledge arena. I love the type who says " but they have not played anybody good yet" It sounds like KU football critics, and then we go ahead and beat the #3 team in the nation. Then we will beat Kstate and you say, i wont belive them until they play...........???? The first strength of schedule rankings (last week) had UNC # 12 in the nation, and Kansas #78. It is what it is. This takes nothing away from Kansas though, they are very deserving of the top spot in the land to this point in my opinion. -

QUOTE(Jimbo's Drinker @ Jan 24, 2008 -> 07:51 PM) UNC cant play any defense, its not very good. Same thing they said in '05. that worked out pretty good for "blue heaven" I agree strides need to be made in that area as well as others for UNC, and Kansas is a very deserving #1 right now as the best in the land, but there are about 6-7 teams that can go with Kansas night in night out and win their share of games. -

QUOTE(Rex Hudler @ Jan 24, 2008 -> 10:48 AM) Anyone seen much of UConn? IU hosts the Huskies Saturday. I have seen a little bit of them and came away impressed but not enough to have a real feel for them. Are they much improved? Are they a player in the Big East? How good of a win would it be for the Hoosiers if they can beat them? The big 7'2 Thabeet is a tough matchup, but UCONN is very raw and not ready for prime time. They are somewhat dangerous, but only as a middle of the road team at this point. It's a game IU should win, it would be more of a questionable loss then a marquee win at this point. -

Interesting comments on the Indiana/Illinois "rivalry". Being a IU hater from Indiana, there fans are mainly responsible for me becoming a die hard Carolina fan after the s*** talking I received for backing the Heels as a youngster only to see them lose to the Isiah led Hoosiers in the 1981 championship game (that one still stings). I do agree with the statement that Illinois is not a "rival" of IU. They are a big ten team so when they are good they are a rival for that time period, but in the long run PURDUE, and Kentucky are the only year in year out rivalry teams. Carolina vs. Duke & N.C. State are rivals. Maryland, Wake, Virginia etc, are conference rivals but not year in year out. Now most team in the ACC considers UNC somewhat a key rival, but like Illinois/Indiana that only goes one way for many years unless it is a battle for the league championship.. -

QUOTE(Felix @ Jan 18, 2008 -> 10:55 AM) Exactly. They threw the ball away by themselves at least 3 or 4 times due to the press and the hilarity that was Eric Gordon last night. Man, he sucked. We already have a top 25 recruiting class for next year (it's been ranked as high as 10th nationally), including some stud big men in Ralph Sampson III and Colton Iverson. Plus, the top recruit out of Canada in Devoe Joseph and other solid recruits (Paul Carter and Devron Bostick). All things considered, getting a recruiting class this good with a 9-22 record last year, I think the Big 10 has something to be worried about down the line. Minnesota talent isn't going to be heading over to Wisconsin or Iowa as easy as it did in the past. I can't imagine he'll have trouble recruiting in the future when this team is already on an upward swing, and is likely to be competing for the Big 10 title in a few years (not next year, the year after though). This following exert is from Paging Jim Shikenjanski, which is by far the best Gopher blog on the web. It gives a pretty good idea of the state of Minnesota basketball right now: This is just a part of his recap of last nights game, the whole thing is here and is a very good read. I agree that recruiting will be better, but attracting elite guys to Minnesota will be a tough sell. Illinois had difficulties capitalizing on their great run the past few years. Tubby is a BIG TIME coach who will do well, but how well is yet to be seen. Sampson is a solid guy, but not a top notch guy. Can Tubby get Minny to the next level? It will be a tough sell, but I wouldn't put it past him. If he had gotten the Michigan job, I think it would be more of a slam dunk that big timers would follow, at Minnesota I'll have to wait and see. Good luck to your Gophers the rest of the way though, they matchup well with the big 11 competition this year. -

Nice road win for Indiana. Minnesota had the game where they wanted it and just could not convert down the stretch. Sampson is getting better athletes at IU, so uptempo games with more turnovers may be more the norm, but they can't cough it up 20 plus times on the road and get awat with a "w" very often. All of the most hated coaches of Illini nation seem to be having great years to this point, while Illinois struggles. Sampson, Pearl, and Self are something like a combined 45-2. I know there are predominantly Illini fans hear, so my sympathy goes out to you for this rough season all the way around. Tubby does show that not too much should be taken from a down season or two. Be careful what you ask for Kentucky the man can coach! We will see if he can recruit guys to Minnesota though in the future. -

QUOTE(Jimbo's Drinker @ Jan 17, 2008 -> 10:03 AM) Maybe the world is starting to realize Coach K is a putz. Well, when Monroe chose G'town over Duke he did say he was a bit freaked out by coach K. crying while asking something about his mother and a situation. He said it was a bit weird, and he didn't know how to take it from coach K. He did not say that was the main reason he chose G'town, but he mentioned it while saying how comfortable he felt with Thompson Jr.
