  1. QUOTE(witesoxfan @ Jun 28, 2005 -> 03:40 PM) Politte > all he's not better than crain. and if he wasn't a white sock, you wouldn't be arguing this.
  2. QUOTE(witesoxfan @ Jun 28, 2005 -> 03:37 PM) The comparison is flawed. Politte is an integral part of the pen, pitching in some of the most pressure packed situations. He has to get the ball over to the closer. If you wanted to make a comparison like that, he would be compared to a leadoff hitter or a 2nd hitter, setting the next pitcher up to succeed in his role. A better comparison for your logic, since most sac bunts come when you absolutely need them, and are put down almost exclusively by weaker hitters, would be a mopup guy. You will never see a mopup, 3 inning, pitch-in-a-blowout pitcher ever pitch in an ASG if that has been his role the entire season(and I add that last part because Jake Westbrook started last season in that role, but was an All-Star as a starter). listen, just list me your 12 all-star pitchers, and tell me who you are keeping home for politte. that's all i ask here.
  3. let's put these guys in the all-star game too: arthur rhodes -- 31 IP, 24 H, 5 BB, 0.87 ERA jesse crain -- 34.2 IP, 22 H, 8 BB, 1.04 ERA justin duchscherer -- 38.2 IP, 30 H, 8 BB, 1.40 ERA mike timlin -- 37.1 IP, 36 H, 9 BB, 1.21 ERA cliff politte is just another good middle reliever. not an all-star. or should we invite all of these guys too? i know, let's invite nothing but really good middle relievers, and let closers and starters stay at home. i'm sure there's a thread in cleveland, minnesota, oakland and boston talking about how all these guys should go to.
  4. QUOTE(Rowand44 @ Jun 28, 2005 -> 03:26 PM) This is one of the more ridiculous posts I've seen on this site. please. tell me why.
  5. QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Jun 28, 2005 -> 01:54 PM) Funny I always though the All-Star game was for the guys who did the best jobs at their respective positions. exactly. he is a pitcher. he is not one of the 12 best in the american league.
  6. i truly believe that if cliff politte was a freaking brewer, none of us would care if he made the all-star team. and you know why? because he's a freaking middle reliever!!!! this is the ALL-STAR GAME. it's like putting a guy on the team because he's really, really good at sacrificing runners over. no one goes to games to see craig counsell move guys over, and no one goes to games to watch cliff politte pitch the 8th inning. let's move on. is cliff politte really good at what he does? f*** yeah. but he's not an all-star.
  7. QUOTE(LosMediasBlancas @ Jun 28, 2005 -> 12:59 PM) How long do you think it'll take Mark to dispose of the Tiger trash tonight? Guesses must be down to the minute, Price is Right rules apply. Whoever is closest without going over wins.......... a nice swift boot to the plums. i don't think we're going to win tonight.
  8. QUOTE(KevHead0881 @ Jun 28, 2005 -> 12:34 PM) Thanks alot buddy. Now I've got Niel f***ing Diamond in my head. just as long as someone besides me has it in his head.....TODAY!!!........TODAY!!!!
  9. let's not look ahead to the a's, because we're coming to Comericahhhhh TODAY!!!.......TODAY!!!!
  10. QUOTE(Kalapse @ Jun 27, 2005 -> 07:21 PM) I also found a quote of mine from a week ago: when i first found this site in like early may, i couldn't believe that amount of people that wanted to cut off paulie's nuts and trade him for justin morneau. i loved paulie then and i love him now. he should make the team.
  11. QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Jun 27, 2005 -> 06:58 PM) If Teixiera finally has taken over the lead in 1b all star voting, does that put Paulie in the game? I think it does...Francona could always pull a Torre and pick all of his own guys so Millar gets in, but Paulie has the 2nd best numbers of AL 1B. paulie HAS to get in at this point.
  12. QUOTE(Kalapse @ Jun 27, 2005 -> 06:54 PM) The Yankees always get a s*** load of votes, they don't care if Womack is batting .234, they're still gonna vote for him because he wears the pinstripes. I've been pushing for Taco Texaria to take over the lead at 1st Base ahead of Tino Martinez since the first update came out and finally this week Teixiera has taken the lead, so atleast the fans have done one thing right. I'm impressed that Brian Roberts and Miggy Tejada have gotten so many votes this year. Especially Tejada who's beating the crap out of Yankee Derek Jeter. Mike Piazza starting a catcher in the National League is a f***ing joke, if Ramon Hernandez doesn't start it will be a travesty. i can't find it, but i'm pretty sure that chuck beltran has an inordinate amount of votes for a guy with nine homers as well.
  13. QUOTE(Kalapse @ Jun 27, 2005 -> 06:44 PM) The backup at third baseman would have been Melvin Mora before he got injured but now I'm thinking Blalock for sure. no doubt. and clearly tony womack should have more votes than tad. nothing gets me as pissed off as these standings. it's such an indictment against fans' intelligence.
  14. it's not even a debate -- timo is gone.
  15. QUOTE(soxhawks @ Jun 27, 2005 -> 06:19 PM) why do all they fans have an obsession with new york and boston bill mueller is just absurd. i can't wait to see who francona chooses.
  16. Rogers breaks bone hitting water cooler ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Kenny Rogers broke a bone in his non-pitching hand when he hit a water cooler in frustration, and the Texas Rangers pitcher will miss at least one start. Rogers, 9-3 with an American League-leading 2.46 ERA, broke a bone at the base of his right pinkie finger after coming out of his last home start, on June 17 against Washington, Rangers manager Buck Showalter said Monday. Rogers gave up six runs, 10 hits and three walks in 3 1-3 innings of a 6-0 loss last Wednesday at the Los Angeles Angels. He had won his previous nine decisions. Showalter said the left-hander will miss his scheduled start Tuesday against the Angels and could miss another turn. Rogers was not in the Rangers’ clubhouse before Monday night’s game against the Angels. Texas had to make a roster move to clear a spot for Gerald Laird, who was in the starting lineup. The Yankees’ Kevin Brown broke his left hand when he punched a clubhouse wall in frustration last Sept. 4. The right-hander needed surgery and didn’t pitch again until Sept. 26.
  17. QUOTE(Kalapse @ Jun 27, 2005 -> 12:17 PM) Just take a look at Tom Gordon's pre All-Star game numbers from last year when he was an Allstar. IP: 50.2 W-L: 2-3 ERA: 1.78 WHIP: 0.83 OPP BA: 1.61 if torre wasn't picking the team, he wouldn't have gone. jeter wouldn't have half of his all-star appearances if not for torre. and as someone mentioned further down, if any middle reliever should go, it should be crain. BUT, what starter/closer are you leaving home to take politte?
  18. you need to be otherworldly to get the nod as a middle reliever. politte's not going.
  19. QUOTE(southsideirish71 @ Jun 27, 2005 -> 01:32 AM) We need that, plus we need Ozzie and Walk to sit down with the hitters and talk about a hitting strategy. Just having them swing for the fences all the time is getting out of hand. On 2 strikes with men in scoring position they should shorten up their swings and put the ball in play. Thats the whole idea of this speed team. You put the ball in play and maybe something happens. If you just K you have no chance. Well, I hope you're right. Something needs to happen. Pleasure discussing this with you. I'm out of here. p.s. I was thinking about starting a thread about what little work Dustin Hermanson has gotten lately, but it may have been discussed in the Meltdown thread, so I won't. Hate to upset anyone. Night all!
  20. QUOTE(southsideirish71 @ Jun 27, 2005 -> 01:25 AM) The only problem is the minute you mention making a trade everyone gets their panties in a bunch. God forbid if you upgrade at 3rd or maybe dont want shingo or viz to come into a close game. You are betraying the best team in baseball. I remember flying into the playoffs in 2000 with a good record and watching a team that pitched pretty well in the playoffs, but couldnt hit in them. Our pitching has been great, but you still need to outscore the opposing team. that year against the Mariners was a nightmare. but even if we upgrade with say Joe Randa over Joe Crede, is that really going to make that big a difference? There isn't a move we can make that's going to add a couple of .330 hitters to our lineup.
  21. QUOTE(southsideirish71 @ Jun 27, 2005 -> 01:17 AM) I have the stats in my sig that pretty much sum up a problem. We are either last or near dead last in singles, doubles and triples in the majors. The only stat that we are near the league lead is in homers. Our strikeouts are up from last year also. This does not project well into the playoffs. We need to start to shorten up the swings a bit, and go for contact more than just mashing the ball to mars. But when we put up a 10 spot on Jose Lima or Sergio Mitre people think the offense is ready for anyone. It's scary. We do take care of business against the weaker teams, and I'm not taking that for granted, because all you have to do is look at what the Yankees have done against the D-Rays and Royals to see how that can change a season. It's just that I don't see what can be done to change it. For instance, if you only have two good starters, you go trade for a third one. If you lack bullpen depth, you go get a reliever. But if your offense is inept against above-average to great pitching, what can you do? You can't get just ONE guy to fix it. It doesn't work that way. On the flip side, you can't overhaul the entire lineup either. I guess all I can say is
  22. QUOTE(Kalapse @ Jun 27, 2005 -> 01:15 AM) The Jason Schmidt thread was started before the Gigantic Trade thread. It's not the same thing, this is why PHT always gets all cloged up with 12 threads of the same subject. Here I pulled a post from the Meltdown thread for you: Ya, that's nothing like what this thread is about. Thanks, man. Let me know when you make Captain on the Thread Patrol Police.
  23. QUOTE(southsideirish71 @ Jun 27, 2005 -> 01:13 AM) We are coming up to the allstar break. I think the too early to judge is kinda over. We have faced some crappy teams over the last month. Everyone is all happy we beat up on the royals and a few other bad pitching teams and forget that our stats pretty much reveal what this team has done. I'm with you man. We're gonna have to win every game 1-0 or 2-1. It's too much pressure on the pitching. I'm just worried is all.
  24. QUOTE(Kalapse @ Jun 27, 2005 -> 01:11 AM) Go read the Meltdown thread and tell me that same thing. The only thing being discussed in there for the last 4 pages is how bad our offense is and how we're f***ed when the playoffs roll around. Go to the Jason Schmidt to the Sox thread and tell people to post in the All-Encompassing Trade thread. I don't see the problem here.
  25. QUOTE(Kalapse @ Jun 27, 2005 -> 01:08 AM) I don't see much of a point in making a new thread for this seeing how this exact topic is being discussed in the Meltdown thread right now. I don't see how you don't see the difference between people ranting about how bad we are because we lost two of three to the Cubs and a thread about our hitting against good pitching in general.
