New Afghanistan Thread
QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Dec 4, 2009 -> 09:15 AM) The US military launched its first major offensive in Afghanistan since the announcement of the new troop surge. The operation is called "Cobra's Anger". Seriously? What is this, a Van Damme movie? Perhaps they're hoping Hollywood will help fund this operation and later give them the rights to use the title for a GI Joe sequel.

QUOTE (lostfan @ Dec 3, 2009 -> 03:10 PM) I got 108 of 195 on that geography quiz. It's harder than it looks. I almost missed some easy ones like Japan (just plain forgot to type it) or Thailand and for a while I couldn't remember what Argentina was called even though I was looking at it and kept thinking "Andres Nocioni" over and over. Apparently there is actually a country called "Dominica" which I didn't know and I got that one only by accident. Yeah I accidentally got that one by trying to type Dominican Republic. Or are those the same country?

QUOTE (maggliopipe @ Dec 3, 2009 -> 10:02 AM) Where's the love for the last couple episodes of Curb? Some of the best TV I've seen in a few years. Having said that, I can now cancel HBO. The finale was terrific.

QUOTE (GoSox05 @ Dec 2, 2009 -> 12:07 PM) I always wanted to go to Green Zebra. It's a bit pricey for my taste although browsing at the menu wouldn't tip you off. They portions are kind of tapas style so you wind up ordering a bunch of things. At $9 or $10 a pop it adds up. But you have to try it once.

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Dec 2, 2009 -> 11:53 AM) Are you a veggie? Yeah. Only Green Zebra of the 3 is considered a veg restaurant although they typically have one seafood dish. It's Chicago's only higher end veg restaurant. It's the guy who also owns Spring and Chophouse Custom House. Knew just opened up by my house and focuses on eco-friendly sustainable foods. They have plenty of meat on the menu. Hachi's is my local sushi/Asain place that I really enjoy. Cool venue and great food.

The Democrat Thread
QUOTE (Rex Kicka** @ Dec 2, 2009 -> 10:56 AM) Except its pretty clear that the Afghanistan strategy is part of a larger strategy with Pakistan. I'm sure this is being a bit simplistic, but quick question - are you saying that because this is a non-state actor who can catch a plane we should just leave them alone? It just seems foolish. Not every situation will require this kind of military action. In fact many of them will be more police like in nature. And that's ok. But in this circumstance, there's not a lot of other options out there that make sense. I don't think sending tens of thousands of our young men and women to foreign lands to kill/capture/contain a few hundred virtually unidentifiable extremists is a good use of our time, resources, money, and lives. Add to that the tens of thousands of foreign civilians being killed in the crossfire and the increased negative perception from the Islamic world and it seems like a poor cost/benefit proposition. Increased domestic and global security measures would be something I'd rather invest in. Just look at America just before 9/11 and now. We are exponentially weakened with all these global conflicts we're trying to maintain. These extremists have nothing to lose by waiting this out as we occupy their lands and sink additional trillions of dollars into this mess. Foreign invasion and occupation will not eliminate terrorism.

QUOTE (Rex Kicka** @ Dec 2, 2009 -> 10:48 AM) Trained in Afghanistan, controlled by the Taliban - which, by the way, has basically become an arm of Al-Qaeda since 2002. And we get rid of them in Afghanistan they'll move to Pakistan, Yemen, etc. It's whack-a-mole and we're losing lives of our own in the process.
