  1. QUOTE(BearSox @ Sep 1, 2007 -> 11:19 PM) I guess I am ready to see a team like this next year: 1. Eckstein, SS 2. Fields, LF 3. Thome, DH 4. Konerko, 1B 5. Dye, RF 6. Pierzynski, C 7. Crede, 3B 8. Rowand, CF 9. Richar, SS BENCH: Jerry Owens & Andy Gonzalez - "dynamic bench duo!"; Lucy - C; Pablo Ozuna - INF; Alex Cintron - INF ROTATION: Buehrle, Vazquez, Garland, Danks, Egbert/Floyd/Gio/Broadway BULLPEN: Jenks, MacDougal, Thornton, Linebrink, Logan, Broadway/Floyd/Sisco/Aardsma ------ I don't want to see a team like that, but I am prepared to. If the White Sox were to sign Rowand for $9-$10 million a season for 3-4 years, I don't think he' dbe batting 8th.
  2. QUOTE(BearSox @ Sep 1, 2007 -> 08:27 PM) I love how the White Sox didn't even try and make Byrd work. They've cashed it in, and it really makes the opposing pitcher's job much easier.
  3. QUOTE(fathom @ Aug 31, 2007 -> 09:45 PM) http://chicagosports.chicagotribune.com/sp...-home-headlines No Sweeney because of too many outfielders. This is just comical right now. I guess we can't take away time from Erstad's spot-starts. This might be the least impressive list of call-ups any team will have. With Owens in CF, Dye locked up in RF, and Fields now in LF, where is he going to play ? Plus, he has had a below average season.
  4. Is he going to be added to the bullpen as a long man in case one of the starters struggle ? I don't understand this move.
  5. If they can get him on a 1 year deal with a vesting option (meaning he meets certain performance levels) for a 2nd year, I could live with it.
  6. QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Aug 27, 2007 -> 10:06 AM) Yeah but, why bother? I mean, unless they are trying to show of Gonzalez for a trade (which seems doubtful), I don't see why he is there over these other guys. To me, the time to make moves and send a message is a few days ago. Gonzalez can play 3B, none of the others can. Also with Fields in LF, Owens in CF, and Dye in RF, it's unlikely that Sweeney would play much anyways. On top of that, he isn't playing particularly well either.
  7. QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Aug 26, 2007 -> 05:16 PM) Personally I always liked the guy. I still think he would be better than most of the broadcasters we have in the booth now. But I do remember the "homer" slam always being applied to Dave as well. Anyone who has that job is going to hear that complaint. Fans expect these guys to go off after every game, and they overlook constructive criticism.
  8. QUOTE(fathom @ Aug 26, 2007 -> 01:39 PM) Fields in LF almost guarantees no Owens in CF next year. I like this move....well done Sox. Not sure about this yet. All the speculation still seems to surround a free agent signing in CF, which obviously would make Owens a reserve if that happens. Somewhere, Williams needs to add players who can get on base. With Fields likely holding down LF now, Dye in RF, Crede (hopefully at 3B), Richar at 2B, Konerko at 1B, Thome DHing, and AJ behind the plate, CF and SS are the only two positions that Kenny has left to find guys who can hit at top of the order, and the SS options aren't very good. Kenny had better have something up his sleeve here.
  9. QUOTE(Heads22 @ Aug 26, 2007 -> 11:40 AM) Wait.....if Fields is in LF the rest of the season, I better not see Andy f***ing Gonzalez at third every goddamn game. Why does it matter at this point ? Gonzalez isn't a long-term answer there, he'd only be keeping the spot warm for Crede, and Fields appears to be our LF answer for next season.
  10. QUOTE(BearSox @ Aug 26, 2007 -> 11:12 AM) Just throwing this out there... over a full season he'd be on pace for 200+ K's. Fields still has a way to go at the plate. He has tremendous power, but he strikes out way too much, and is only in the upper .230's, lower .240's. Hopefully, he can cut down on those strikeouts, and get his batting average up some.
  11. QUOTE(Kalapse @ Aug 26, 2007 -> 10:59 AM) According to the Score Fields will be in LF for the rest of the season. What I don't understand is why it takes management so long to make these decisions. They knew Crede was expected back next season since the surgery, and that Fields would have to play LF if Crede is still on the 2008 roster (which I would expect to be the case given his diminished trade value, and managable salary) so I have to wonder why it took them so long to make this move IF this is there expected course of action for next season.
  12. I have no issues with Rongey. Maybe he doesn't rant like some would prefer, but I have heard many post game shows where he offers constructive criticism of the team.
  13. QUOTE(witesoxfan @ Aug 25, 2007 -> 04:25 AM) Well, you are the one advocating bringing back Crede; what is he going to produce next year? You can't depend on him to stay healthy past May, you can't depend on his defense remaining anywhere near gold glove caliber after back surgery, and he never was a very good offensive player to begin with. I would guess, absolute best case scenario, you're looking at .270/.310/.490 from Crede at 3B with (slightly) worse defense than before surgery. Worst case, he's done before June, and $4-5 mill is absolutely wasted. With Hunter, I see worst case scenario being about a .750 OPS with good defense in CF with potentially a season ending leg injury in early August, but he's been quite healthy since 2005 and I'm not sure I'd even look at that, with best case being great defense and an .825-.850 OPS with good speed added to the lineup in place of Joe Crede's slowass. I also don't see the holes in the pitching staff as easily replaceable; if you want to sign a reliever nowadays, it costs $3 mill a year, and a league average starter costs $8-10 mill. Personally, I'd rather take a chance with Egbert, Gio, Floyd, or Haeger than spend that kind of money on mediocrity. I would much rather have Joe Credie for 1 year at 5 million or so than possibly give T.Hunter a 5 or 6 year deal. The decision to have Joe Crede play 3B next season depends entirely on his health - if Williams can't get beyond potential health issues and get reports indicating that he will hold up for 140 games, then I would leave Fields at 3B. Even without insurances from doctors, it still may be wiser to gamble on Crede for 1 year at reasonable money vs a long-term deal for a guy in his 30's already. I am much more focused on finding top of the order hitters as well - Hunter would make the team better next season offensively, but I don't know that we need another middle of the order hitter as much as guys who can get on base for those guys. Pitching is my other chief concern - this just doesn't look good. I do trust Garland to rebound next season, but will he even be here if they are talking about spending money on a CF ? The bottom of the rotation is a mess. Denks/Contreras/Floyd, etc don't provide much confidence, and the bullpen sucks.
  14. Any idea what time the gate opens tomorrow for the White Sox / Red Sox, 2:55 PM Start ? Thanks in advance!
  15. QUOTE(BearSox @ Aug 25, 2007 -> 01:08 AM) Your point being...? Isn't it obvious ? Do you really want to give Tori Hunter a 4 or 5 year deal worth at least $12 million a season, probably more OR would you rather give Crede 1 year at $5 million for 2008, and then see where you stand after next season ? Besides, I'm looking at this pitching staff, and seeing lots of holes. Is signing either Rowand, a fan favorite, but most likely overachieving this season OR Hunter, who is getting older, but still very good, for a long-term deal something we might regret later , especially if that is our main off-season move? You tell me, since you have the answers.
  16. Doesn't signing T.Hunter/A.Rowand mean that Joe Crede won't be offered a contract for next season ? Correct me if I'm mistaken, but if they sign one of these guys to play CF, wouldn't Owens move to LF, and Fields would stay at 3B for next season ?
  17. QUOTE(fathom @ Aug 17, 2007 -> 11:47 PM) I'd have no problem with Erstad as the last, or next to last, guy on the bench. However, our manager is so s***ty, he won't be able to use him correctly. I pray that Erstad won't be brought back. He can still be a solid reserve, but Guillen would find excuses to turn him into an everyday player.
  18. QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Aug 12, 2007 -> 08:02 PM) I'm not sure if you are familiar with the poster Balta, but that's kind of like asking Tom Tancredo who his favorite illegal immigrant is. Not really familar with his politics, just wondering then why he cares about the GOP race then....
  19. QUOTE(Capn12 @ Aug 12, 2007 -> 08:07 PM) Which may very well mean that you'll be seeing The Count of 3 and 2 here next season, and the one after that. Its gonna take a helluva lot of convincing for ownership to cover that much salary, especially for a 48 year old starter that WE gave the money to. I tend to agree. I don't know of many teams that would take that even some of that contract, much less the White Sox paying for him to pitch elsewhere. Historically, the White Sox don't do that type of business so I'm expecting that to change.
  20. QUOTE(29andPoplar @ Aug 12, 2007 -> 05:37 PM) I'm trying to remember the last time the White Sox traded a guy and paid a significant part of his contract. Probably never, but I don't think they have a choice, and it may take $10 million + to get something done.
  21. QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Aug 12, 2007 -> 04:28 PM) Someone finally printed a Romney price tag. Balta, who is your choice from the GOP as of today ?
  22. QUOTE(BearSox @ Aug 12, 2007 -> 02:53 PM) Contreras needs to be traded. I don't care if he becomes worth that 10 million a year or not. He is in his 40's, no doubt IMO, and will never be the pitcher he was back in the second half of 05/first half of 06 again. He is old and his stuff is deteriorating. He might show glimpses of what he used to be, but he will never be that pitcher again, IMO. If he can have a good rest of the season and if we could get something decent for him via trade without having to pay over half of his salary to a team, I think KW would have to be a freaking retard not to make the deal. Just my opinion. I agree. I just hope that he can get his ERA down some by finishing the year out strong, and then maybe we can get some team to take him, although I do expect that the White Sox would have to pay at least $10 of the remainin $20 million.
  23. QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Aug 11, 2007 -> 11:45 PM) 1. Mitt Romney 4,516 31.6% 2. Mike Huckabee 2,587 18.1% 3. Sam Brownback 2,192 15.3% 4. Tom Tancredo 1,960 13.7% 5. Ron Paul 1,305 9.1% 6. Tommy Thompson 1,039 7.3% 7. Fred Thompson 203 1.4% 8. Rudy Giuliani 183 1.3% 9. Duncan Hunter 174 1.2% 10. John McCain 101 0.7% 11. John Cox 41 0.3% In 1999, there were somewhere around 24,000 participants in the straw poll. This year, the total was around 14,000. Either Iowa has lost an awful lot of people, or there was a vastly lower interest level. I just don't see the point of a straw poll in August, so long before the primaries even start up still. I don't think this will have any impact on anything other than Romney hyping it up for a day or two, and telling everyone that he's in it to win it. Meanwhile, the only two candidates are Rudy and Thompson (once he gets in) in the GOP Field.
  24. QUOTE(Dick Allen @ Aug 12, 2007 -> 12:09 PM) The guy won 17 decisions in a row before he hurt his back. He was the ace of the Sox staff when they won it all. Explain to me how if he finds his form he's still not worth $10 million a year? He would be the 4th highest paid starter in the Sox current rotation in 2008. If he finds his form, sure, he's worth it. Chances are, this is what he is now as he could be in his 40's, and his velocity does go missing at times.
  25. QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Aug 11, 2007 -> 01:08 PM) For those unaware, today is the Iowa Straw Poll for the GOP. Romney has pushed hard in Iowa, Giuliani and McCain have laid back a bit. The others are trying to make a name for themselves. We'll see how it turns out - the Coliseum in Ames, Iowa, will be the focus of national attention today. Too bad Iowa State's basketball team hasn't been able to achieve the same thing in that building for some years now (waits to be verbally assaulted by Heads). Romney had better win this easil given the time he has put into Iowa. Saying that, this doesn't mean a whole lot, really not much of anything.
