QUOTE(Tony82087 @ Feb 21, 2006 -> 03:52 PM) I beleive Javier Lopez is also going, and the last name is escaping me, but I am almost positive I heard 4 names from the Sox are going. Uribe is the only positional player still playing in the WBC. I just like the fact that the Sox had several positional players how up to ST early. The only plus for Uribe is that he has played Winter Ball and batted in the 2 slot.

QUOTE(YASNY @ Feb 21, 2006 -> 01:09 PM) Yes, I've thrown 1984 as an example out there a couple times to those that think we are going to waltz to a repeat. 1984 was a nightmare, due to the facts the we flopped and the Cubs won their division. Thank goodness for Leon Durham. The 1983-1984 example is not a really good comparison to 2005-2006. Squires, Cruz, Dybzinski, and Vance Law compared to Konerko, Iguchi, Uribe, and Crede? The team went from 1st in Runs scored to 10th and 3rd in ERA to 10th from 1983 - 1984. The team OBP in 1984 was a spectacular .312. The pitching staff seemed to all have career years: Dotson, after his 22 win season in 1983, had a total of 1 more winning season and ended his career 111-113. Bannister's 16-10 was his career best in 1983. He never won more than that in one season. Hoyt never came close to 24 wins again after 1983. He was out of baseball after 1987. Those guys don't even compare to MB, JG, FG, JC, and JV.

QUOTE(Cuck the Fubs @ Feb 21, 2006 -> 11:49 AM) I don't think Bonds' record will be the one that stands. I think A-Rod has a legitamite shot at 800. He's been the youngest to 100, 200, 300, 400. I would make Bonds pay much more than an arm or a leg for it though, b/c he is a prick, selfish, greedy, racist, and anything else mean you can come up with. A-Rod I would also make pay big. He plays for the Yankees, has the biggest contract in baseball, has an agent who is a dick. I would make him admit to using steroids or take a lie detector test. Anything to humiliate him, like giving the ball to Ron Kittle. Maybe he can go hunting with Dick Cheney.

DePloderer, Any possibility of you writing a quick tutorial on how to make those so sweet?
-
TLAK, good analysis, as always. The one thing that makes a huge difference is strength of schedule. If you apply the SoS to your predictions some teams will have about a +/-10 game difference.

Bonds passing Aaron will be highly unlikely. He will have a better chance at breaking the BB record in a season than passing Aaron. Once he gets around 25-30 HR's, most pitcher will just give him crap to hit or walk him.

Sox DVD Post Season Set Now Available
RME JICO replied to Al Lopez's Ghost's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE(Steve9347 @ Feb 21, 2006 -> 10:18 AM) it was always supposed to be the clincher... That's actually a recent change. All the original pictures of the cover showed Game 2 of the ALCS with the score 2-1. Now on the MLB site it has the angle picture that clearly shows Game 5. -
Sox DVD Post Season Set Now Available
RME JICO replied to Al Lopez's Ghost's topic in Pale Hose Talk
It is definitely changed from Game 2 to Game 5 of the ALCS. The pictures of the cover clearly showed 2-1 as the final score, and now on the MLB site, it clearly shows Game 5, which is a good thing. DVD Discount DVD is usually the best price: http://www.deepdiscountdvd.com/dvd.cfm?itemid=ANE074722 -
QUOTE(Jordan4life_2006 @ Feb 21, 2006 -> 12:30 AM) It almost sounds to me we're getting picked as the favorite by default. Let's be honest, there's not a whole lot of really good teams out there. Even the Yankees and Red Sox aren't getting jocked like they normally do. I still believe most people think we're incapable of repeating. I've heard all off-season how "lucky" we were and that all our players just had "career" years" and that the umpires "saved" us and so on and so forth. I think that will be plenty of motivation for our guys. We have a chance to from a great team to a special team in 06. I agree, there are a lot of people and critics out there that think the Sox should not have won last year. That alone will be enough motivation. Also, most of the players have their own personal motivations: Are Garland and Conteras one year wonders? How will Conteras do without El Duque? Can Thome rebound from injury? Is Pods going to be the same after surgery? Can Anderson play CF? How will Uribe do batting 2nd? How will Iguchi play in his 2nd year? Can Jenks handle the Closer job? Was Crede's post season a fluke? Will his back hold up? Will AJ rebound from a down year? Can Vazquez return to form? How can the Sox win without Timo?

Rosenthal's best and worst moves of the offseason
RME JICO replied to SSH2005's topic in The Diamond Club
I am surpirsed not to see the Thome, Konerko, or Garland deals on there somewhere. -
Once again, great pics SSH2005! Thome looks like he is in great shape.

QUOTE(The Bones @ Feb 16, 2006 -> 03:41 AM) This has to be a record for how fast you can fall from superstar to a joke. The results of the poll on the bottom of the page made me laugh. Only Wyoming and Delaware think he's a hall of famer. http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/index Wyoming and Delaware have a total of about 100 votes. It is pretty clear that he took some type of performance enhancer, and last year showed what one year off the juice gives you.

The difference between the #3 and #5 hitter also means about 40-50 ABs a year. Would the Sox rather have Thome or Dye getting those ABs? It would make more sense to have Thome in that spot. I like: Podsednik - L Uribe Thome - L Konerko Dye Iguchi Pierzynski - L Anderson Crede Also, Mackowiak can come in and pinch hit to add another LH bat to the lineup.

That is really hard to believe that after Delgado dissed the Sox and KW, that KW would be pursuing him again. Not only that, Delgado rubbed a lot of people the wrong way when he would not come out for the playing of "God Bless America" every game. I don't think he would have fit in with the Sox Clubhouse.

QUOTE(SSH2005 @ Feb 15, 2006 -> 01:03 AM) Armando Almanza Chad Bentz Javier Lopez Corwin Malone Arnie Munoz Stephen Randolph Paulino Reynoso Rusty Tucker Quantity, not quality. There is a great chance that at least one of these guys will pan out and be a decent lefty out of the pen. Most of these guys have a lot of upside and a fresh start for some of them might unlock that potential.

Is that the same as Sammy Sosa power or Barry Bonds power?
-
Good stuff! They have to promote their opponents to bring in fans.

QUOTE(DePloderer @ Jan 30, 2006 -> 01:09 PM) Do you mean 16 x16 pixels? Which ones in particular? Any SoxTalk logo you can make that looks good at 16 x 16. For some reason any larger ones I resize to 16x16 look like dirt.

"Tigers could be dark-horse contenders in '06"
RME JICO replied to SSH2005's topic in The Diamond Club
I like this quote: Rogers - 41 yr old that had one good year. His career WHIP is 1.40! In a Pitcher's park: Bonderman - 2005 -> 4.57 ERA, 1.35 WHIP, .271 BA Maroth - 2005 -> 4.74 ERA, 1.37 WHIP, .288 BA Robertson - 2005 -> 4.48 ERA, 1.36 WHIP, .266 BA Verlander - 2 starts in 2005 -> 7.15 ERA, 1.76 WHIP, .313 BA Those are some real intimidating pitchers. They give the Tigers about 6 innings and 4 ER per game. -
Maybe we can trade for Mags, Valentin, and Koch too.

Base Stealer Intangibles by Hardball Times
RME JICO replied to Frank the Tank 35's topic in Pale Hose Talk
This quote completely discredits all that work: All you have to do is watch the games to see if Pods affects the opposing pitcher. You cannot figure that out by what the guy behind the base stealer does at the plate. Those are two independent variables. The hitter might be in a hit and run situation where they have to make contact, or just trying to move the runner over. You cannot gain any information that way. I also found that you can manipulate the numbers anyway you want. No wild pitches, how about pitch outs, passed balls, throws to 1st, HBP. Also, depending on the hitter, they may intentionally walk them to set up an easier double play. You also cannot really equate an intangible like that to runs produced per game. It would probably be a better idea just to see how many runs a base stealer scores after they steal a base. -
El Duque's performance by far was the best individual performance. All the starters pitched some great games, but it is hard to beat getting out of a bases loaded, no out jam on the road in the playoffs vs the defending champs.

QUOTE(SSH2005 @ Feb 4, 2006 -> 12:30 AM) Podsednik Uribe Thome Konerko Dye Iguchi Pierzynski Crede Anderson That lineup is more realistic with Thome providing protection for Konerko and the lefties being broken up a little. It will be nice to have 3 full time lefties in there with Mack coming off the bench as another.
