QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Jan 16, 2006 -> 11:45 AM) We were considering Prior for Contreras I guarentee you. We wanted Prior for 3 years instead of Contreras for one. This isn't a shock at all. I thought Prior signed a 5 yr deal thru 2006 and he would have 6 years of service time in 2007. So wouldn't that make him eligible for FA after 2007? Either way I guess the risk and reward factor would be worth a shot since he makes chump change at 3.6 Million.

QUOTE(kyyle23 @ Jan 16, 2006 -> 11:23 AM) Sorry Los, not agreeing here. What adjustments is the offense supposed to make besides scoring more than 29 points? Carolina was scoring at will, and the Bears didnt have the time to adjust to a better running game. Rex got into a shootout because Tillman fell on the second play of the f***ing game. Then Tillman gave up an interception to someone 3 inches and 20 pounds smaller than him. Then Tillman let Mangum sneak into the corner uncovered for a touchdown. Dont tell me our offense let us down when they scored 21 points on the 3rd best defense in the league, and were pressing for more in the last two minutes. The defense had two important chances to hold Carolina, after the bears pulled within 2 (16-14) in the third and in the 4th(23-21), and they didnt. What sort of adjustment would you ask for? After Carolina extended the lead to 9 should the bears have run the ball more and eat up more time ? The Bears were on the clock, they needed quick points. The defense let the Bears down, plain and simple. I agree 99%. I also think you have to blame some other components of the team, like the coaching and special teams. The Defense is mainly to blame, but the coaches cannot put single man coverage on the best receiver in the game. What if that one defender falls down? Oh yeah, 14 points. There were some horrible decisions from the coaching staff. When they were down by 2 both times, they abandoned the run which allowed CAR to pressure Grossman into bad passes. The other failed part was the special teams. Maynard killed the team in the 1st half. If he punts to his average on some of his shanks, CAR would have had some pretty bad field position, but instead the Bears had to work from their end zone most of the 1st half. The coverage team did ok, but the Bears did not get one above average play out of them. The only other aspect that I thought was part of the problem was the officiating. There were so many missed calls that went the Panthers way it was ridiculous. Not all of them went the Panthers way, but most of them did. I think that the 1st Tillman call was a blown call and could have went to Smith just as easy as it went to Tillman. Moose was getting raped all game without calls and there were 3 or 4 blocks in the back on those WR screens that were not called. On the Mangum TD, the ball hits the ground in his hands which is an incompletion. Even on the Jones run, it was clear he was about a yard and a half short, yet the on field call was a TD. Lucky for the Bears that there was a face mask on the play. How about the play clock running out before the Grossman interception. How does every single official on the field miss that one? Again, who knows what happens if the Bears get penalized and stay alive that drive. It just seemed like the luck was on the Panthers side last night, fumbles bouncing right back to players (Foster, Delhomme), players falling down, missed tackles. Hopefully the Bears can put this behind them and learn from it. I almost hope they try some other schemes like the 46 instead of the vanilla Cover 2. There are some obvious flaws in the coverage that was exposed last night.

QUOTE(kyyle23 @ Jan 16, 2006 -> 11:30 AM) If the Sox stole Prior from the O's, i think Cubdom(dumb-dedum-dumb) would have a mass suicide. That would be the ultimate stick in the eye if the Cubs had to face Prior in the crosstown classic. Probably not because he would be on the DL.

QUOTE(SoxFan101 @ Jan 16, 2006 -> 10:34 AM) Umm you dont carry 2 punters and Idonno why we would get rid of our current punter.... he didnt have the greatest game yesterday but he is prob one of the best in the business. I dont think we take a WR in the draft we have a lot of young guys and they are prob going to try and add Airese Currie to the mix... We definitely need some OL depth for sure especially if Metcalf isnt brought back id like us to see us take a guard and tackle in the 3rd/4th. A speedy CB is needed and if there is a guy available in the 2nd id definitely take him... and yes we definitely need to take a TE in the 1st. Mercedes Lewis seems the most athletic to me and the possible biggest game breaker in the NFL even if we lose a little blocking with him. We always have Gilmore or whatevr we can bring in on 3rd and short plays. Maynard one of the best in the business? Those first couple of kicks were some of the worst punting performances in NFL playoff history! You could have punted better. They need to bring in someone to compete against him next year. His Punting AVG ranked 26th in the NFL, and even though he had 24 punts inside the 20, he also had 11 touchbacks. The Bears are a field position team, and punting is a critical component of that formula. If Maynard hits average or better punts yesterday in the 1st half, who knows what might have happened. 1st punt - 19 yards, CAR starting position - CHI 36. 3rd Punt from CAR 49, 13 yards. 5th punt - 29 yards, CAR starting position - CAR 40. The Bears receivers are not that good. Moose drops too many passes. Gage will in his 4th year next year and he has yet to show any type of improvement. Berrian and Bradley have potential, but if there is a huge value pick for WR, the Bears shouldn't pass it up. They should also look to upgrade the WR position in FA. Yes, the OL could use some depth, and a CB would be a reasonable pick.

Here is the Boston Globe article excerpt: Why would the Sox make that trade? Seems like a lot of speculation. Could easily have been a misunderstanding since both the Sox and Cubs were involved with BAL. http://www.boston.com/sports/baseball/reds...pitcher/?page=3

He is a big sore loser. Wouldn't you talk trash about the Sox if they owned all your former teams? Red Sox lost in the ALDS 3-0. The Indians get spanked at the end of the season stopping them from making the playoffs, and the Cubs watch from the couch as the South Side wins a World Series championship. I guess his next stop will be Minnesota?

QUOTE(winninguglyin83 @ Jan 16, 2006 -> 10:00 AM) Been out of the loop for a bit. Just wondering if either of these guys has signed with another team -- or if the Sox are chatting with either one of them? would think somebody would take a look at willie because of his age, speed and versatility. I don't follow Timo, and the Rockies were interested in Harris, but he wanted too much money:

QUOTE(Steve Bartman's my idol @ Jan 16, 2006 -> 10:04 AM) Does anyone know if DeShawn Foster, Julius Peppers, SHawn Alexander, etc. will play on Sunday? Foster - No, Peppers and Alexander - Yes -
QUOTE(Heads22 @ Jan 16, 2006 -> 01:29 AM) So...if I've got this right....the Bears would be best served draft wise if Pitt and Carolina win and go to the Super Bowl, because two teams that would potentially pick before them would then definitely go after? You are half right. The 4 playoff teams with a better record than the Bears will draft from 29 - 32. Since PIT beat the Bears they will also draft later, so say 28th. If CAR at least gets to the SB they would either draft 31st or 32nd and move past the Bears. So right now the Bears draft 27th, and will draft 26th if CAR makes it to the SB. As for team needs, the Bears need the following: TE, CB, OL, WR, P I wouldn't mind a draft where the Bears picked up one of each, then added some depth in those positions as well. Get the best value for each pick.

QUOTE(DBAH0 @ Jan 16, 2006 -> 07:32 AM) Did the Bears actually bother to double cover Smith at any stage of the game (since I didn't see any of it)? I never saw him doubled at the line with 2 DB's. The only thing they did was roll the Safety over to his side, but even then it should have been on EVERY play. If the Bears D would have taken Steve Smith out out of the game, Delhomme throws for about 100 yards and the Panthers would have never moved the ball. Smith's plays contributed to every scoring drive. The Bears looked so unprepared, which is surprising from a Lovie Smith coached team. On one of the Panthers TDs the D was confused and players were running on and off the field when the ball was hiked. Then there was a Panther wide open for the TD, another blown assignment by the coaches and Tillman. Bears Def - Grade F Bears Coaches - Grade D- Bears Special Teams - Grade D

QUOTE(Pierzynski 12 @ Jan 15, 2006 -> 08:16 PM) Panthers will beat the Seahawks. As long as they can cover Smith the Seahawks will win.

QUOTE(Milkman delivers @ Jan 15, 2006 -> 08:13 PM) You should be more mad at the Bears' defense than you are at Smith and Delhomme. The D was garbage. I am pissed at the Bears D, and at the coaches for some horrible player decisions. Who was on Smith for his 6th TD, some 4th String DB? Grossman, Berrian, and Jones played great on offense, and the Defense gets owned. Unbelievable. I would have rather lost 13-10.
-
I still cannot understand how hard it is to cover Steve f***ing Smith. Lovie and Rivera made some bad player decisions by leaving Tillman on Smith, then putting a sub on him for another score. What the hell was he thinking?
-
Just wasn't the Bears year. A full year of Grossman will be nice next year. Man did the Defense crap an egg in that one. How hard is it to just cover Steve Smith and make someone else beat you? The only thing I am pissed about is how poorly the game was officiated. There were way too many non calls that went in favor of the Panthers. f*** Steve Smith and Jack Delhomme, you will be on the couch after next weekend.

QUOTE(nitetrain8601 @ Jan 14, 2006 -> 10:27 PM) Garcia = Mexican Parra = Mexican Nomar = Ramon backwards(his father's name) = could mean Mexican. Jury says he's part Mexican. Thats awesome. I remember the Nomar Ramon part, but I didn't think to break down his last name.

So Joe goes to arbitration. 100 players in total: http://www.forbes.com/business/feeds/ap/20.../ap2449818.html So other interesting names.

QUOTE(Milkman delivers @ Jan 14, 2006 -> 05:33 PM) What are you implying? I am not implying anything, just interesting to see the KC connection with OAK, since OAK was amid Steroid rumors, and so was Tejada in BAL.

I always found it interesting that the only current player named in the Grinder Rules is Pods in #65.

I love this one: Hilarious. Go Cubbies, maybe you can be the 2nd best team in your Division this year, but I doubt it.

QUOTE(wsgdf_2 @ Jan 14, 2006 -> 12:41 PM) Anybody else think that looks like ALCS Game 2, not Game 5 on the cover? Holy crap, you are correct. The box clearly says Game 2, score reads 2-1 Sox. They did that for AJ's play I guess. So the set is going to be Game 3 vs Boston with El Duque's heroics, then Game 2 of the ALCS with AJ's play, and the entire WS.

Here was their starting roster from 1999: Chad Kreuter Mike Sweeney Carlos Febles Joe Randa Rey Sanchez Johnny Damon Carlos Beltran Jermaine Dye Jeremy Giambi The only players that hit over 20 HRs was Sweeney, Beltran, and Dye interesting enough. Another odd note, in 2001, Damon, Dye, and Giambi all end up on the A's with Jason Giambi and Miguel Tejada. Those seem to be some pretty big coincidences. I understand what he said about why he would say something like this, but the timing seems odd, why now?

QUOTE(knightni @ Jan 14, 2006 -> 12:31 AM) Or you could print one for free. Sweet thanks, I have a new framed picture on my wall.
