QUOTE(Heads22 @ Nov 27, 2007 -> 09:39 AM) http://www.soc.iastate.edu/news/caucus.pdf If ISU students participate with any sort of numbers, it certainly helps one guy. Well get the vote out in Ames, Heads! I'd be happy with Obama and Paul winning Iowa. Paul ain't gonna happen, but, Obama is a real possibility. Why is the Soc department doing this anyway? Where's my old Poli Sci department when they are needed? Tell that blowhard McCormick to get his rear in gear!

QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Nov 27, 2007 -> 08:34 AM) Mitt Romney is an idiot. According to his own system, he shouldn't be President because he wouldn't be representative of the entire country. I hate to say it, but I would rather see Guiliani nominated than Mitt. Even as a Clintonesque scumbag, he at least holds some moderate social positions. I guess anymore we just assume our Presidents have no morals or ethics, or none of the leaders of the races would even be mentioned as Presidential material. Romney has two positives - executive experience in a counter-party-heavy state, and a record of some degree of fiscal discipline. Giuliani's supposed positive of some social moderation appears to have vanished in any case. In the fight between those two losers, I'd have to go with Romney.

The really strange thing in that article, to me, is the talk about needing a "dependable middle infielder. Is that part a joke? I can think of nothing the Sox need less. They have 2 shortstops (Cabrera, Uribe), a young 2B they keep saying is a rising star (Richar), 2 bench guys who are supposed to have that job anyway (Cintron, Ozuna), and at least 2 young guys who seem poised and ideal for that role anyway (Bourgeois, Getz). Seriously, having another middle infielder should be near the bottom of the list of priorities. The main focuses at this point should be CF and LF in that order, then possible (depending on how trades and signings go) adding an SP for a short contract. ETA: I realize that Cintron and Uribe should be, and probably will be, gone. They still have more than enough tools at that point.

QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Nov 26, 2007 -> 10:01 PM) Actually, I interpreted it as saying Mitt Romney is pro affirmative action, given that he's just endorsed a quota system, and that's why I posted it. OK good, you caught that too. Sort of funny, yeah?

QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Nov 26, 2007 -> 09:52 PM) Mitt Romney: I realize this quote is supposed to make me think Romney is anti-Muslim, but... I don't think that's the most interesting aspect of that quote. Anyone want to guess what it is? Hint: He's a Republican?

Who is KW talking about?

The whole argument with Crede's offensive abilities comes down to one question - was 2006 an aberration, or did he "figure it out"? His strong late 2005 suggests maybe he did indeed figure it out. In that case, putting up 2006-like numbers, then he's a very good 3B overall. But, since he didn't put up numbers like 2006 EVER before that, or even close, there is a pretty good argument that it really was just an aberration. My vote: 2006 was a career year, but he did figure some things out. Playing full time in 2008, if he's healthy, he's a streaky .260-.270 hitter with ~25 HR power and good clutch hitting, but a still low OBP in the .300-.310 area, a lot of K's and he's slow as molasses on the basepaths. -
QUOTE(santo=dorf @ Nov 26, 2007 -> 05:46 PM) So are you going to sell your car and trim your lawn with scissors? Yeah, because that's the only alternative. Do I need green?

QUOTE(southsideirish @ Nov 26, 2007 -> 05:02 PM) So what is going on with this? Is it official yet? What are the terms? If no, how long does it take to pass a physical? This is insane. Is this another Bruce Levine reporting hoax? It was on the whitesox.com site, which I think makes it 99.9% sure to NOT be a hoax. -
I have to admit I'm surprised she is doing that well in AR, so that is possible. Here is the thing with the VP candidates. Bayh was looking like a significant contender in the very early stages, then he suddenly dropped out, for no apparent reason. This happened immediately after a trip to Iraq with Clinton. He's a moderate who is very, very popular in IN, and I'd bet he would definitely deliver IN to Hillary, which would be a coup for the Dems. And that sort of moderate, fiscally-disciplined guy in a red state is exactly what Hillary wants. I am 90% sure a deal was struck on that trip. Its possible the deal was for a cabinet post I suppose - but I think its more likely a VP thing. Now, Richardson did work in the Clinton White House. And he has been defending Hillary in the debates in an indirect way, trying to calm the candidates a bit. But I still think its Bayh's slot.

QUOTE(jasonxctf @ Nov 26, 2007 -> 01:44 PM) www.270towin.com its funny. amongst all of the head to head matchups, questions that people ask about candidates. I ask this question about Hillary. Using the Electoral College, I don't see a way in which she loses for 4 reasons. 1) She'll win every state that Kerry won in 2004. 2) She'll win Arkansas (may be close if Huckabee is the top ticket, but he won't be) 3) She'll win Iowa (unless Romney is the nominee, which he wont be) because she actually campaigned there. unlike Guilianni, McCain and really Thompson. 4) She'll win New Mexico with Richardson as a running mate. Thus she can still lose battleground states in Virgina, Florida, Ohio, Arizona, Colorado and Nevada. That puts her exactly at 270. 1. She's not a lock to win everything Kerry won. She will struggle in MI, PA, MD possibly MN. Any one of those going red could cause her issues. 2. Richardson won't be her running mate - I'd bet money its Evan Bayh. 3. EVERYONE has campaigned in Iowa, and a lot. Well, except Gravel and Thompson, who haven't really campaigned at all. 4. She is not see as an Arkansian. She grew up in suburban Chicago, and is now a Senator from NY. I think its unlikely she takes Arkansas or any other state in the mid-South.

QUOTE(WilliamTell @ Nov 21, 2007 -> 05:44 PM) This past week I went to a forum on the Iraq War. There were 5 professors at my school that talked about an hour combined, all of them not supporting the war and all of them making fun of Bush and one person even said, "I don't see parties as Democrats or Republicans, I see them as the party of life, or the party of death," and he for sure wasn't talking about abortion. It just bothers me because the university didn't get one single pro-war or conservative view point. There was one person that gave facts and everyone else mostly gave opinions about it. That's not a forum, that's high tea for liberals. I'd be pretty pissed too.

QUOTE(Texsox @ Nov 25, 2007 -> 07:00 PM) Yet the assumption is the CTA is corrupt and mismanaged. Which may be true. Oh I don't doubt its true. But as I've been saying, the problem is not JUST a corrupt and bloated bureaucracry running CTA. There are also other issues, and the system is in bad need of infrastructure work.

QUOTE(RockRaines @ Nov 25, 2007 -> 05:55 PM) They should sell the EL, maybe then it would be halfway reliable. I rode on the DC Metro this past week. I was reminded how clean, quiet and reliable that system is. Did a little research though - they get a LOT more money per track mile than the CTA does. And their infrastructure isn't nearly as old either.
-
QUOTE(Rex Kicka** @ Nov 25, 2007 -> 01:00 PM) Would anyone in Chicago really have a problem with naming rights to the EL if it meant the thing actually got fixed? If some of the bill for repairs and upgrades can be footed by advertising, by all means, go for it. I have zero problem with it. Even if its only a small portion, that's better than zero.

QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Nov 24, 2007 -> 04:41 PM) Daley wants his Casino. That's all there is to it. That's why he and Stroger came up with the horrible tax and spend plans at the sametime, and its why he is pulling stuff like this out of his ass. He is going to try to shame Blagovich into giving him his casino. Actually, Blago is in favor of a casino already. The only issue between them is ownership and revenue shares from said venue. But I think you are right, its partially driven by negotiating that outcome. Its also partially the Olympic bid, at least for the city anyway. The county is just being Strogered again, as everyone should have expected if they voted for that loser.

NSS72's investment pick of the day... Come Monday, any of you stock and index pickers out there, I'd strongly advise you short the major non-luxury retailiers. Its really a perfect little storm of positives for them that will not hold up. Black Friday wasn't as bad as hoped, which gave them rise. But that Black Friday rush was partially boosted by much better weather than previous years, not to mention that Black Friday shoppers are highly price-motivated. A strong showing may in fact mean a weak overall holiday market. Add in the huge amounts of debt problems lately and the housing crunch... I think by early January, we'll see the retailers did worse than last year.

QUOTE(Punch and Judy Garland @ Nov 24, 2007 -> 02:06 PM) Check out their K to walk ratios. He's much much better He is not worth anything like 2.5x salary of Linebrink. -
If you want historical parallels, why not look at what the UK went through in Iraq a century ago. Same crap the US is going through. Too bad BushCo couldn't have been bothered to know about that. And in that case, they left in a hurry, and they took some paths that would not be considered politically acceptable in modern times.

QUOTE(Punch and Judy Garland @ Nov 24, 2007 -> 11:59 AM) Not that its a good contract but Cordero is more than 2.5 times as good as Linebrink and had success in that league. That said, we didn't need a closer so don't think I meant we should get him. Anyways, I bet the industry is surprised because middle relief is the one place where you need bargains given the cost of starting pitching. Nearly $5 million a season suggests that day is gone (it has been for about a year now) 2.5 times as good? Not even close. His numbers aren't all that much better than Linebrink's. Keep this in mind too - the Sox could spend this money on a setup guy because they have an elite closer for super-cheap. Most other teams can't do that. And, honestly, I think one of the reasons they did it also is they like having semi-reliable insurance on Jenks in case he gets hurt. -
Good news. I think he'd make a nice bench piece.

QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Nov 23, 2007 -> 09:20 AM) I think I will take this road as well. I figured this question wasn't so much for the straight-ticket types. I would figure you two would be pretty set on D and R respectively.
