  1. QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Oct 9, 2007 -> 07:43 AM) I know everyone went all hot button topic on us... well except for PA, but that's a different story... but I think the most important issue here is being misssed. States right versus federal rights. Does the federal government have the right to force the states to enforce the laws that the state doesn't like? IMO, that should only hold water if those laws are within the Constitutionally granted purview of the federal government. Immigration/emigration is, I am pretty sure, within federal purview. Its part of the concept of citizenship (federal), and also possibly related to defense and security (also federal). I do not know off-hand if the US Constitution specifically addresses it, but I do know that its accpeted legally that the federal gov't has the final say over who can or cannot come in. Of course, the other aspect to this not at all about legal control, and more about financial influence. As the federal government gets into spending on more and more typically state-controlled areas such as education and health care, and the states come to rely on those monies supporting their systems, the federal government has an almost blackmail-like control over the actions of the states across the board. They can simply say, do this, or you don't get your funding. Ironically, during Reagan's administration in the 80's, in their attempt to give more control back to the states, they ended up using a tool that backfired and had the opposite effect - block grants. Those monies have been so riddled with conditions that the states become even more beholden to the federal government than they were before.
  2. QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Oct 8, 2007 -> 07:44 AM) Wow, everything in the US media has sounded like just the opposite. It seems like everyone is chasing Rio. A part of me has started to wonder if this story was just a plant for Daley to shake some more money out of corporate donors... I'm sure that is exactly what it was - Ueberroth telling Daley to get out there and schmooze like the city has never schmoozed before. He wants to see Chicago get the bid, being the USOC chair.
  3. QUOTE(Soxy @ Oct 8, 2007 -> 08:55 PM) Woohoo! I'm going to go see Tori Amos on Saturday! She is fun in concert. My wife took me to go see her a while back when she played in the bandshell in Millenium Park, and I ended up liking it, even though I'm not terribly into her music.
  4. QUOTE(CWSGuy406 @ Oct 8, 2007 -> 08:44 PM) Chip Carey is still as brilliant as he was when he was with the Cubbies. "A-Rod hits a bomb to left... did he get enough?" He might actually be worse than Joe Buck, if that's even possible. I know this isn't a popular opinion around here, but, I am OK with Buck. In fact, with the right partner in the booth, I think he has at times been good.
  5. QUOTE(southsideirish71 @ Oct 8, 2007 -> 08:41 PM) So how long before this thread is quoted with posters handles in an SI issue like before. Let's hope not. Given some of the posts, that could cause some problems, regardless of what is or is not true.
  6. QUOTE(StrangeSox @ Oct 8, 2007 -> 08:23 PM) Rex would have underthrown it and had it picked. Actually, Rex would never have seen him. He still has Mike Tomczak disease - he projects his passes, and is incapable of checking down to 2nd and 3rd receivers, unless its the outlet back.
  7. Lucy will be playing in the Arizona Fall League, with the Phoenix Desert Dogs.
  8. Pre-emptive shot across the bow here... I think its good we are delving into the reliability of information being provided, but let's be careful not to insult any of the specific posters here. Just as important, unless you are 100% sure of fact, let's avoid any accusations of conduct of players and coaches as well. Just a warning.
  9. I'll attempt a list here of players and their teams/leagues, but please feel free to add anyone I miss. 10. Some leagues (Hawaii - Inouye playing) have already begune. Arizona Fall League (7 Sox players on the Phoenix Desert Dogs) starts Tuesday, October 9th. Various Mexican and Caribbean leagues get underway shortly (a handful more Sox players/prospects). So here is a thread to discuss the results, the players, and their futures. Lots of players are being watched closely. Enjoy...
  11. QUOTE(Chombi and the Fungi @ Oct 8, 2007 -> 04:30 PM) They used to same the same thing about Manny. I think it's just him being uncomfortable. Ozzie is supposedly close to him and was his idol growing up. Maybe a change of scenery, Ozzie's influence and a little more media pressure will wake him up. Let's not forget, he is still a kid. And this year has proven just how true it is for Manny. He basically took a vacation during the heat of the pennant race, AGAIN, he played lazy a lot, again, and his numbers were well off from last year. If he is an analog for Cabrera, then all the more reason to avoid him.
  12. QUOTE(Heads22 @ Oct 8, 2007 -> 06:51 PM) He's got quite a bit of value in a trade. Yup.
  13. Heh. Yankees just got their favor back from the Umps.
  14. I'm actually in New York right now. I was out at a pub earlier having dinner, watching the crowd develop to watch the game. I thought about asking the bartender to but Monday Night Football on, just to see how the Yankees fans reacted. Unfortunately, I was seriously outnumbered.
  15. QUOTE(whitesoxfan99 @ Oct 8, 2007 -> 06:06 PM) Agreed, they just showed his hand and there was no mark or redness. Basically impossible if you get hit by a 94 MPH pitch. Redness or an external discoloration isn't necessarily going to happen at all. Depends on the injury, and how soon after you see it. And looking at the last replay, it looks like it hit both his hand and the bat. That being the case, if he is getting out of the way of a pitch, then it can be an HBP.
  16. QUOTE(Brian @ Oct 8, 2007 -> 05:52 PM) 2-0 Tribe. Bottom 1, ARod comes up with 2 on and one out and K's. Go figure. Anyone else think that both Torre and A-Rod are out of the Yankees organization if they lose this series?
  17. QUOTE(witesoxfan @ Oct 8, 2007 -> 05:28 PM) He will be. If they added Heath Phillips, they'll add Jack Egbert. I am not sure when the Rule V cutoff date is, but if its December or later, then I think its very possible Egbert is traded before the draft even comes up. He just looks like the kind of guy that will work well in trade for the Sox this offseason. Don't tell Heads.
  18. Media Matters is definitely slanted, and have a definite political agenda. Which is fine. They also happen to be a lot more persuasive for intelligent people than some other similar organizations (MoveOn, Heritage), because they do a much better job (as has been stated here) of actually doing good research and investigations. Unfortunately, the majority of people in the public are more swayed by the sound bites provided by MoveOn and the Swifties, regardless of their foundation in truth or lack thereof.
  19. Instead of questionable pardons... I'd like to see more Presidents use their last few weeks in office to do things that are politically unpopular but that the country ultimately needs. Clinton actually did a whole bunch of really great things with XO's to help protect wilderness areas and forests, restrict pollution levels and other assorted environmentally important things. Unfortunately, Bush then basically reversed or left to rot virtually every one of them and in fact did the opposite for some efforts. But I think if this BushCo administration actually does some common good type stuff, the next President may actually let some of it stand.
  20. QUOTE(Soxfest @ Oct 8, 2007 -> 11:04 AM) I applaud this about dam time! I guess that's one way to stop illegal immigrants.
  21. QUOTE(knightni @ Oct 6, 2007 -> 12:32 AM) I met a guy from Brazil who was shocked to hear that they were even in the running for the Olympics. He didn't think that Rio would make a serious run at it. Its all about geography. Western Hemisphere will get 2016. No way Europe does since they have 2012, and Asia PAC has had a tone lately, so forget Tokyo. So I'll stick with my prediction - Rio or Chicago.
  22. Michael Clayton Recommended. Out in limited theathers right now. Go see it if you can. A smidge over the top here and there, but really great characters, good tension, excellent acting (and I don't mean Clooney - others steal the movie), solid cinematography... overall really good film.
  23. QUOTE(Rex Kicka** @ Oct 7, 2007 -> 09:52 AM) So why doesn't he just give the guy clemency. As President, he has the right to do that, no? I'm not sure he could spell it, let alone know what it is.
  24. QUOTE(BigSqwert @ Oct 5, 2007 -> 03:45 PM) I really think he is getting some momentum. Timing is everything. And he really has a solid grass roots foundation. I'm still holding out a very small sliver of illogical hope for a Richardson vs Paul election in November of '08. They both have some momentum right now, though they are still huge long shots.
  25. QUOTE(kapkomet @ Oct 5, 2007 -> 03:34 PM) To be honest, I like mostly what he has to say, but - I do differ on him with Iraq and the Middle East - he started that whacko "it's our fault" crap re: 9/11 - and that instantly turns me off. Has he really said stuff like that? I haven't seen it. I saw one quote where he said that part of the reason things are the way they are over there (in terms of the hatred of the US) was due to our own actions. And he is 100% right about that. But that's not the same as saying that 9/11 was our fault.
