Bush invites Dems to White House, re: Iraq
NorthSideSox72 replied to NorthSideSox72's topic in The Filibuster
QUOTE(Jenksismyb**** @ Apr 10, 2007 -> 03:08 PM) Why are we cutting it off at 03? You just discounting his first 3 years? What did Clinton do after 97? Under his watch the economy has been just as good if not better than Clinton's, especially when you factor everything that's happened over his term, including 9/11, Katrina, etc. That's one. What do I win? To answer your question, I say 03 because I think Bush did indeed do a few good things in 01-02. Not many, but a few. His presidency in total has been horrendous, but I think its amazing for a President to go through what are supposed to be the strongest years - late first term and early 2nd - and not accomplish a damn thing. The "economy under his watch" is not an accomplishment, isn't anything he did, and just as it was for Clinton, has very little to do with him. Now, if you can show me something he ACTUALLY DID, signed, passed or pushed that CAUSED the economy to be so strong, then that would be an answer to my question. He did a few things that did indeed effect the economy positively in 2001 and 2002, such as the bulk direct tax refund. But that was a temporary effect. So, I am still looking for an answer to my question. What has BUSH DONE or ACCOMPLISHED since 2003 that is a positive? -
QUOTE(CanOfCorn @ Apr 10, 2007 -> 02:51 PM) That is excellent.

QUOTE(Texsox @ Apr 10, 2007 -> 02:22 PM) I applaud the man for the meeting and hold out that his statement was an opening negotiating point. He has demonstrated the courage to follow his heart in other matters that finds himself surrounded by Dems (immigration). I believe his Presidency would have been better if it was more Dubya and less advisors and handlers. You have got to be joking. LESS advisors and handlers? This administration may have been a lot better if Bush and his 2 or 3 closest allies had ever bothered to get expert advice from ANYONE. Ever. This has been a Presidency that has clearly, even proudly, stated that the President makes his decisions "from his gut", and the man actually thinks that getting input from those who might not agree is a sign of weakness. Here is a challenge for anyone on this board - show me any single thing this President has done since about 1/1/03 that has been positive. Any law he's gotten passed, any executive order that ended in a positive, any well-handled international relations, anything. That's a 4 year period, and I am struggling to find even one positive thing he has done, against a whole plethora of negatives. Even Carter's 4 years were better than that. And before the inevitable non-answers come out, I am not asking about what he HASN'T done, nor am I asking who might or might not have done better. I'm simply asking, what positives has he accomplished in the last 4 years? -
Well done, sir! Welcome to the club!

QUOTE(Jenks Heat @ Apr 10, 2007 -> 02:11 PM) They are booing him becasue weather it was with the Brewers or Sox, he kills the cubs and blew them off in the offseason to sign with the Astros. cub fans feel every player should sign with them if they want such player. This radio broadcast hurts my ears. yeah, they were booing him today, and then he knocked in a run with a base hit. Awesome. Also, yesterday, he taunted the left field bleachers a bit. He acted like he was going to throw a ball to them, faked it and then didn't do it. Also awesome.

QUOTE(rangercal @ Apr 10, 2007 -> 11:03 AM) or you are getting your hits at the right time. Im debating as if it would. If someone averages 8 RBI's a week, he has a spot in my lineup anytime. In the end runs win the game, not average. If you want to take that angle. Then I will take the angle batting avg. can be raised depending on who bats behind you, determining what pitches you see ( circumstances not under that player's control). Angle? Tell me, how does a player get RBI's with no one in front of him, other than a solo HR? If you want to see how good a player is at creating or knocking in runs, then use a stat that actually tells that story. For knocking in runs, use something like BA-RISP. Then you have a valid statistic. This isn't an "angle", this is called good statistical analysis - removing independent variables. RBI as a gross total is subject to too many of those. RA-RISP is therefore much more valid statistically in telling you how a player does in those situations. And no one is arguing that runs aren't the bottom line offensively, so I'm not sure what you are getting at with that.

QUOTE(TheBigHurt @ Apr 10, 2007 -> 12:36 PM) Still no info? Anyway, if it's true, my heart goes out to Jose becausthe idea of this is sad. Given the source was a poster on SSS, with no citation or source mentioned... I think there is a good chance this turns out to be baseless.

It seems highly unlikely that the Sox will make a move for another catcher until May sometime at least, when we know what Hall's deal will be. -
QUOTE(StrangeSox @ Apr 10, 2007 -> 10:24 AM) They mentioned during the broadcast that this is no longer the case and why Jenks didn't get the save opportunity. Jenks only pitched 2/3 of an inning, AND the tying run was never on deck.

QUOTE(rangercal @ Apr 10, 2007 -> 09:55 AM) are you talking about the course of a year or the course of the season? If anyone averaged 8 RBI's a week despite hitting .182 would have a spot in my lineup anyday. The point is, that would never happen. RBI's are like W-L for pitchers. They may not be 100% irrelevant, but they are very dependent on circumstances not under that player's control. Therefore, they should be taken with a few big grains of salt.

So, the President has graciously invited Congressional Democratic leaders to the White House to discuss Iraq, but places a caveat before the meeting that he won't be changing his stance on withdrawal. So, basically, he's invited them over to "discuss" it, which apparently to him means they can agree with him or leave. Has this President ever been familiarized with the concept of compromise? What a joke this guy is. Compromise is one of the things about our political process that is good - not something to be rejected out of hand. The majority of Congress and 70% or so of this country (depending on which poll and how the question is asked) disagree with the indefinite occupation - you'd think maybe the President should at least be willing to be open to discussing the possibility. I don't agree with the pork barrel B.S. in the bill either, mind you, and I am not defending that. I agree with Bush on his irritation with that aspect. What's really funny, though, is the commentary from Perino in this article. Read her responses to the press' questions. This is just classic BushCo - the absolute executive. I have never felt my skin crawl about a President like it does with this guy. He really doesn't get it at all. He actually thinks that as President, he is the king of all he surveys. This isn't a friggin' monarchy, Dubya.

That would be right here. In any case, yes, sometimes people here will tend to take "projections" as being bible truth. I've made that argument here myself. Just because a player has a few specific high end skills, that isn't the whole story. Learning how to succeed and win at each level has importance as well. You'll sometimes hear amazing projections for guys who can't hit .250 in A-ball, while the another player who has succeeded at each level may be dismissed because he's 26, or because he was never "projected" very high by the scouts. Sometimes, the scouts are wrong, and people aren't always quick to adjust their thinking to the reality in front of them. Too much at stake in their earlier assertions. All that said, I think you'll get a better response by sticking to the baseball arguments, and taking it down a notch. Yes, power hitters often have higher K numbers - BUT, that doesn't mean those K's are irrelevant. I look forward to some lively discussions in here.

QUOTE(Jordan4life_2007 @ Apr 9, 2007 -> 11:57 PM) Fixed. I'm basically the 1 percent who thought he would bounce back. I know at least 2 others. Balta and I have both said, if he is healthy and gets playing time, he has an excellent/career year. Search tool is down and I can't find the posts at the moment. But it is certainly still really damn early. In the meantime, I'm enjoying Erstad showing me I was wrong about him so far.

Its getting a little frustrating seeing BA sit on his ass every day. KW wants him on the team, Ozzie doesn't... so Ozzie takes him but doesn't play him. Part of it, I know, is that Erstad and Pods are doing well right now. I'm not saying BA plays every third day in CF or something. But there is no reason why, in a given week of baseball, he shouldn't be relieving Dye, Erstad and Pods one game each. That gets him 3 games a week. So far, 6 games in, he has 1 AB and hasn't started yet. If this keeps up, he won't be growing or improving at all.

QUOTE(Dick Allen @ Apr 10, 2007 -> 07:06 AM) One of my best friends used to serve people as a summer job in college. Unless things have really changed the last few years, there isn't a chance in hell of someone serving divorce papers getting into a major league clubhouse 15 minutes before a game. I'd have to concur. Heck, even a cop can't just wander in there, unless they are invited or have a warrant. And those servers are, in my experience, not given any authority for entry or trespass that is anything beyond what any other citizen has. I've seen them work before, they do things like wait for people to come out of work and catch them on the way to their cars for just that reason. I will say though, if he did just get divorced that day, it would explain a lot about his behavior out there. Not just his pitching, but his puzzled wandering around the mound, hesitation, etc. No one is a robot, and everyone who isn't a sociopath would be effected to at least a certain degree by that sort of thing.

FutureSox.com 2007 Top 25: Honorable Mention and Names to Watch

I'm a little disappointed that Lucy isn't in the Top 25, but at least he made the next tier. Same with Texeira - thought he'd be there too. Good work putting together the list though, and I look forward to hearing more about all these guys. -
QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Apr 7, 2007 -> 04:14 PM) I'm never shopping in Indiana again. There are times when our very own politicians rival those in Iran and Russia when it comes to propoganda. I'm laughing so I don't cry.

QUOTE(BB2ZZ @ Apr 8, 2007 -> 11:31 AM) Didn't know a little jawing would shut everyone up so fast... Isn't this supposed to be where we hope EVERYONE does well rather than just crowing about your own predictions? B Ham is looking good on the mound and TC is driving in some R's Perhaps you might get some good discussion from people if you didn't refer to them as "boneheads", or specifically call out certain posters for their supposed lack of knowledge, or tone down your sarcasm a bit. Just a thought.

Both Class A teams (W-S and Kannapolis) have started their seasons, and Lin is not on either roster. No word where he is going yet officially, but it appears that he is headed to Great Falls (Rookie), if he is even still with the organization. After the news that he wasn't as-advertised during Spring Training, Lin seems to have a hole to dig out of.

Donny Lucy is starting the year in B-Ham as expected. Looks like he is the starting guy there, which is probably better for him than playing backup to Wiki in Charlotte - more playing time. And so far, here is his line in the first 4 games of the season... AVG G AB R H 2B 3B HR RBI TB BB SO SB CS OBP SLG OPS .455 4 11 4 5 3 0 0 1 8 3 1 0 0 .571 .727 1.299 Can't complain too much about that. I still believe this kid is the best catching prospect in the system (which admitedly isn't saying a lot), and if he continues to hit well added to his already-solid defensive play, he'll probably be in Charlotte before the season is out.

QUOTE(retro1983hat @ Apr 6, 2007 -> 11:10 PM) We are getting new landscaping and a new patio in the next few weeks and have been looking at lighting for the outside. (spotlights, patio lights, etc.) It seems that for brightness that hardwired electric is the way to go. But, I like the ease of the solar lights. However, they always seem very dull. Is there something I should be looking for in solar lights to get the brightest possible light? Is there a wattage or something I need to look for to get the brightest ones? Any help, would be, well, helpful. You can get outdoor solar lights that are pretty bright, but don't expect spotlights. They are fine for unobtrusive general lighting, or lighting a path or a deck. One thing you have to do though, is wipe down the solar panel on the lights every once in a while. If they get too dirty, the panel won't get enough light.
