QUOTE (SoxPride18 @ Apr 8, 2015 -> 01:16 PM) I like Basto in WS, he'll only be 21 I believe. Are the Sox high on him? He's one of the biggest mysteries to me in the system in that regard. Drafted 5th round and highly considered. Was terrible defensively at SS, so they moved him to 3B. They promoted him to A ball in 2013 and he hit .190 with no power. Scout sort of hinted to me in 2013 he really flopped, and I kind of write him off to be honest. Then, they promoted him to W-S anyway for 2014, and he improved a lot at the plate (.263 AVG, 7 HR, didn't walk much but made some contact). That was a surprise. Then when Ravelo elected winter ball over AFL, Basto took the AFL slot despite being just 20... and played first base, which he had never done before. Put up an .856 OPS in the AFL, though in pretty small sample size (41 PA). I don't know what to make of the guy, to be honest. He's still just barely 21 with only about 1.5 seasons' worth of pro games. Defensively he's not a SS at all, not sure about 3B either, and doesn't seem to have a ton of power for 1B. But the Sox keep challenging him.

QUOTE (shipps @ Apr 8, 2015 -> 12:40 PM) 5 years into his policing career with probably countless incidents such as a "fleeing suspects" and this time the adrenaline made him spazz out? I cant buy that one. You can buy it or not, it happens. But again, I do NOT know if that is the case here or not. No idea. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Apr 8, 2015 -> 12:46 PM) There's a reason why police departments in south carolina have opposed body cameras. Because you're probably right and if things aren't filmed the guy would get off without charges. This will eventually become the norm. States will end up requiring it, but probably only for departments of a certain size (the equipment is an expense). I know the Albuquerque PD, which has been all over the news the past couple years for bad shootings, now requires it for all their officers. But there was also a shooting there recently where the camera was off. So you need to not just have them, but create a system that will ensure they are on at all times, and have officers know pretty quickly if they fail to work.

Basto is going to Winston (he told me), so he's out. Richmond said he broke his ankle in camp, out until May, so obviously not him. Sent a note to Jirschele, waiting to hear back. Don't have contact info for Delmonico.

Trying to figure out the last couple roster spots in BHAM, particularly the starting 3B. They have 13 pitchers, so only a 3-man bench. The scenarios seem to be: --25th man is Nick Basto, starts at 3B, Farrell goes to bench where he usually is --25th man is Josh Richmond so they have an OF on the bench, Farrell starts at 3B --25th man is an org guy like Justin Jirschele to help Marcus Lemon cover the field from the bench, Farrell starts at 3B --25th man is Nick Delmonico, starts at 3B, Farrell goes to bench Those are the only scenarios I can think of. The open slots are 3B and a bench spot, and Michalczewski is going to W-S. Any other possibilities I am missing? Which do you think is likely? I reached out to Basto to see if he can tell me where he's headed, also going to try the other guys I think. See if anyone answers.

QUOTE (shipps @ Apr 8, 2015 -> 11:55 AM) There has to be some history on this cop for doing things the wrong way. A cold blooded killer like him wouldnt just come out one day and shoot someone 8 times in the back without showing signs previously of being a monster. Maybe, but not for sure. Adrenaline and high incidents do funny things to people, and not always the same thing even to the same person each time. The human brain sometimes will spazz out. No idea if that is the case here or not, just saying, it is possible (even if unlikely) that he's never done anything like this. Any shootings are documented anyway, so they'd be able to look that up quite quickly.

QUOTE (Iwritecode @ Apr 8, 2015 -> 10:35 AM) I thought we had a thread about bowling but I can’t find it so I’ll just put my comments here. My daughter is in 7th grade and bowling for her school (7th and 8th graders only). There are two varsity teams and one JV team. The “A” varsity team is the better team overall and is made up of 4 8th graders. The “B” varsity team has 2 in 7th grade (including my daughter) and two in 8th. They are putting together a team to go to a state tournament and it is supposed to be made up of the 5 best bowlers. Well there is lots of drama going around because two of the bowlers on the “B” team have a better average than one of the bowlers on the “A” team. The 5 picked were the 4 from the “A” team and one 8th grader from the “B” team. My daughter got left off even though she is top 5 based on average. We were told it’s because she’s in 7th grade. I don’t think that should matter. If she’s the better bowler, she should go. I’ve basically kept my mouth shut because I don’t want to start a war and there’s already drama over which of the 5 that were picked should be the sub. If the four on the "A" team were the four best bowlers it would make sense. But they aren't. For younger kids like that (Junior High), you have to balance competitiveness with honor, if you will. Hard thing to do. And I suppose 7th/8th graders are right on that cusp, where High School sports pretty much lose any leftover "everyone plays" or "older kids get their shot" stuff, and then the ones even younger in elementary school it is more participatory. Seems like your daughter is caught in between.

QUOTE (SoxPride18 @ Apr 8, 2015 -> 09:26 AM) Quick question. Yency Almonte, Kannapolis? What do you think? I'm actually intrigued by his upside. He should be Kanny, yes, since he's pretty much only played short-season ball.

My favorite episode yet. Nice work Daniel, that was a nice 3 minute work break!

QUOTE (SoxPride18 @ Apr 8, 2015 -> 08:59 AM) It would be great if rosters came out so I can update my spreadsheet. Join the club. Maybe it will be today, which would be refreshing. More likely things will finish up tomorrow, if history is a guide.

QUOTE (greg775 @ Apr 7, 2015 -> 11:17 PM) You just can't shoot a traffic violator in the back as he's running away. I know nothing about that cop, but he's going to jail for murder. If he's a normal, upstanding citizen, I feel sorry for him. I realize Milkman laughs at me, but why can't these bad cops just shoot a guy in the leg or the foot or the hand? What's with the shooting to kill in all these instances? s***, the minute the lawbreaker realizes the cops are shooting at him, he's probably going to stop running anyway unless he is suicidal. QUOTE (Y2HH @ Apr 8, 2015 -> 05:55 AM) You watch too much tv. Unlike as shown in the walking dead, these shots are next to impossible no matter how well trained you are, especially in the heat of the moment. To add to Y2HH... as a cop, you are trained to shoot for center mass - always. Period, full stop, end of story. This is mostly because it is already hard enough to do that properly even with a lot of training. You'd be amazed how many shots miss even at close range. Firing a pistol accurately in a high-tension scenario is very difficult to do well. There is perhaps a very narrow exception here, for a SWAT/Metro sharp-shooter type guy, which most departments don't even have. They may at times aim for specific body areas with a sophisticated rifle. But that is not the scenario we are discussing in any of these shootings. Another important point - courts have held reliably that a cop shooting someone is deadly force, always. So from that perspective, it is all the same. If you want to make a criticism on these shootings (and in this South Carolina case it is just plain murder anyway), it is the tendency to go straight to the gun you should be looking at. And that comes to not only training, but mentality.

SEASON PREVIEW: Charlotte Knights

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Apr 7, 2015 -> 04:54 PM) "Yogi" Farrell's going to be in AA, one would assume? Jeremy? He's on the tentative BHAM roster, yes. -

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Apr 7, 2015 -> 04:37 PM) and we're probably well past the point of calling it "make or break" for Jared Mitchell, based on the fact Hawkins got 80-90% of his playing time, along with Engel Beltre After his rebound last year he's still on the radar, if very much on the fringe of it. If he flops, he's released. Thus, make or break. -

QUOTE (SoxPride18 @ Apr 7, 2015 -> 04:36 PM) Good write up. They should be pretty decent. Quick questions, where is Peter Tago (AAA rule 5 draft) and Josh Richmond? Richmond wasn't on the tentative AA roster either. Best guess is Tago in A+. He's got command issues. Richmond I don't know, could be BHAM's 25th man (roster has 24 active), or could be gone, or could be injured. No idea. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Apr 7, 2015 -> 04:37 PM) try "plagued by in/consistency" with Cleto Drabeck will be here, sooner rather than later...if he passes successfully through waivers, right? Should be yes, and possibly Sanchez too when Petricka is back. -

By the way if you're all that bored, head on over to the FS forum, we're starting the affiliate previews. -
We're pushing out season previews for the four full-season affiliates. First up is the Charlotte Knights. Here is our preview. Meanwhile, pass the time of a White Sox off day reading about players just a step away from the majors.

One of the knocks on Micah the past couple years is he sometimes tries to do too much, both on defense and on the basepaths. Needs to slow it down. I think we just saw those nerves rear their head. Not overly concerned. -
Badler from BA put up a very thorough review of all the significant LatAm prospects from this past year's class for the White Sox. It is behind a paywall but well worth the money to subscribe. Here is the article. There are a bunch of names there from VZ not previously reported. And updates on the DR kids. Some of these guys will be in AZL this year.

Much of California geographically is inexpensive to live in, relatively. It's just the entire coastline and the big cities (mostly) that aren't. If you want to live in some desert down in SoCal a long ways from the ocean, or a mountain town in northern Cali, you can find cheap housing.

QUOTE (JPN366 @ Apr 7, 2015 -> 10:21 AM) From the Barons website, first story on the front page. Hard to miss. http://www.milb.com/index.jsp?sid=t247 Excellent. Looks like it is the roster for an exhibition, so it's probably subject to a few small changes. They'll need one more guy, as you pointed out.

QUOTE (SoxPride18 @ Apr 7, 2015 -> 09:36 AM) Guys I don't see on the Barons anymore: Tony Bucciferro, Stephen McCray, Michael Ynoa (thought he was optioned there), Braulio Ortiz, Jefferson Olacio, and Terrance Marin. McCray was released a while ago. Bucciferro is a marginal guy, so not a huge shock. Ynoa is the biggest surprise, along with Olacio. Marin and Ortiz a mild surprise too. But that roster has an open slot too - so one of them, like Ynoa, should be there. I suppose there is also a chance Winiarski isn't really on the club, that his name just bled over, since he was released at one point I thought.

This Barons squad looks like maybe the strongest of the full season teams.

QUOTE (JPN366 @ Apr 7, 2015 -> 08:53 AM) Barons tentative roster... http://www.milb.com/documents/3/4/0/116632...er_tnt7vm4h.pdf Can't seem to open that for some reason. Where did you get it? I don't see anything official on their site yet. EDIT: NVM, opened now. Looks like they re-signed Winiarski after releasing him, that's interesting. Also they are double-promoting Danny Hayes? Wow.

The White Sox are notoriously late with these. Last year the rosters were being finalized as the first games were starting (which would be Thursday). Sucks when I have to write the damn affiliate previews without rosters, haha. Taking my best guesses with a big board spreadsheet I'm putting together. I've got Charlotte pretty much pegged, thanks to some help from a Charlotte Observer beat writer. A couple pitching slots are still questions, in part based on if EJohnson starts on DL. But here is what I have for Charlotte at this point, which is solid except for two slots: Starters... Kevan Smith Dan Black LGarcia**(CS) Tyler Saladino Matt Davidson Trayce Thompson Engel Beltre Jared Mitchell Neftali Soto Bench... Rob Brantly © George Kottaras © Juan Diaz Matt Tuiasosopo SPs... Carlos Rodon* Chris Beck Scott Carroll Brad Penny Shawn Haviland RPs... Daniel Webb Jairo Ascencio Arcenio Leon Maikel Cleto Onelki Garcia???? Zach Phillips* Jarrett Casey* DL: Jesse Crain, Erik Johnson The ones with ???? aren't confirmed yet.

The official, Predict the 2015 White Sox record thread

This is the narrowest bell curve I've ever seen on one of these on this site. A ton of people in a very tight range.
