  1. Maybe I missed this, but, Gonzo in the Trib said the other day that Barnum and Hawkins would both be in the fall AZ instructional league, along with about 30 other Sox prospects. I will ask him about a full list when I get a chance. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Sep 13, 2012 -> 07:51 AM) Sounds like Japan must not have worked out so well for Terry Doyle... Terry Doyle ‏@TerryDoyle32 @SPChrisHatfield don't count @KnightsBaseball out yet... going back for some home cooking Or, maybe Japan's season is over.
  2. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Sep 12, 2012 -> 03:55 PM) Not sure. Can you source your data for the Chicago per-pupil costs and the private per-pupil costs? Yeah, I have a real hard time believing there are many, if any, private schools in the Chicago area with tuition as low as 9k/year, let alone have the average that low. That is hard to believe. That said, some private schools have tuition discounts/wavers and scholarship programs for poor kids.
  3. Trib now reporting Liriano NOT starting in MIN, it will be Santiago-Quintana-Peavy for that series, per the game notes the team distributed.
  4. QUOTE (SoxFan1 @ Sep 12, 2012 -> 03:29 PM) This is from another teach friend of mine (but who does not work for CPS and is not on strike): "I eat, breath, and sleep teaching. Love that i'm living my dream but I'm physically and mentally exhausted. Thinking of just moving into my classroom since I don't leave until 5:30 anyways. The sad life of a first year teacher." 5:30!?!?!? Wow. That must be rough. So... you are saying because you have a friend who complained about leaving at 5:30pm... what? All teachers are lazy or something? What is the point of posting this?
  5. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Sep 12, 2012 -> 02:56 PM) They propose shifting state and local budget priorities, return of TIF money (?) to local areas and a more progressive state tax scheme for the top 5%. They want to tax financial transactions, at the state level? To fund schools? Sorry but that makes no sense. First, that needs to be done at the national level, if at all, or else you are just sending the business to other states, especially in the electronic trading age. Second, what does this even have to do with schools? Third, if you want to tax financial transactions, there is a real good reason to - to fund the oversight agencies that are overwhelmed and underresourced. Not to fund some unrelated thing. Ditto on the cap gains adjustments - doing it by state is business-stupid as well.
  6. QUOTE (onedog#1 @ Sep 12, 2012 -> 02:04 PM) Hey, new poster here long time follower here at soxtalk. Grew up loving the early 90's sox since that was my first memory gives you an idea of my age, 25 here. Anyways.. just wanting to comment on the rest of this sox tigers series, was hoping we could yesterdays game with their 2 big arms pitching today and tomorrow. We are still relying on the long ball got them yesterday but all solo. I feel the sox need to put the pressure on this bad tigers defense these next two games knowing that verlander and max not going to throw too many bad pitches to sox hitters ( hopefully im wrong on that) I just know Hawk and Stoney were critical in the previous series in Detroit for not laying many bunts down with Cabrera with a bum ankle, put the pressure on them were at home.. need one of these next two games. Hopefully Gavin " no emoticons" Floyd keeps his success going against the tigers. I don't have much confidence in liriano getting his control back in the pen, but will see.. Welcome to the board!
  7. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Sep 12, 2012 -> 01:51 PM) Wise tried one last night and missed. I missed that one. So did he, apparently. I still think it is worth trying.
  8. QUOTE (Greg Hibbard @ Sep 12, 2012 -> 01:25 PM) Apr 6 to Apr 23 10-6 Apr 24 to May 7 3-11 May 8 to Jun 1 17-5 Jun 2 to Jun 19 5-11 Jun 20 to Jul 7 12-4 Jul 8 to Jul 30 8-10 Jul 31 to Aug 26 16-8 Aug 27 to Sep 11 5-10 Sep 12 to Oct 3 ???? I think it's worth noting that our previous three bad stretches ended with either 10 or 11 losses in the stretch. Interesting. One thing about this team, they seem to be less streaky that previous Sox teams. They have ups and downs like all teams, but the downs aren't as bad, and the ups aren't as huge. But if you are right, then this team is due for a nice little run the rest of the way.
  9. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Sep 12, 2012 -> 12:52 PM) Im just saying that you said noone in their right mind would suggest Johnson start over Viciedo, that is a months old thread stating just that. No name confusion. Hm. Perhaps I was a bit harsh with "no one in their right mind". But there are SOME of us who are suggesting Johnson get an occasional start when the scenario seems ideal - and in my view, tonight seems like it should be that night. Then Dunn returns tomorrow.
  10. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Sep 12, 2012 -> 12:47 PM) http://www.soxtalk.com/forums/index.php?sh...t=0&start=0 Is my name Lillian? Here is my post in there: http://www.soxtalk.com/forums/index.php?sh...t&p=2633537
  11. QUOTE (flavum @ Sep 12, 2012 -> 11:59 AM) Breakdown: (Home-Away-Total) Cle 10-9-19 Det 10-9-19 KC 10-9-19 Min 9-10-19 Bal 3-4-7 Bos 3-3-6 NY 3-3-6 TB 4-3-7 Tor 3-4-7 Hou 3-4-7 LAA 3-4-7 Oak 4-3-7 Sea 3-3-6 Tex 3-3-6 Cubs 2-2-4 Atl 3-0-3 Mia 3-0-3 NYM 2-2-4 Phi 0-3-3 Was 0-3-3 2-game series: 5 (2 back-to-back with cubs) 3-game series: 36 4-game series: 11 (12 if you include the Cubs series) Weird there are uneven number of home/away games against division opponents. At least we get the extra home game against DET and KC, as those are the teams that scare me the most for 2013 (as it stands now - obviously the offseason could change that).
  12. I'd like to see De Aza, Wise and Ramirez all attempt one bunt tonight, somewhere during the game. Down the 3B line. I can't believe the only time we've tested Cabrera over there is with Youkilis. Scherzer is a tough pitcher, it would benefit the team to shake things up and get them off balance.
  13. QUOTE (MurcieOne @ Sep 12, 2012 -> 12:06 PM) NYT Editorial on CTU Strike I don't know if anyone has posted this yet, but the New York Times just published an editorial on the issue. The seem to side with the City on this issue and aren't very complimentary of Mrs. Lewis. As I said before, Karen Lewis is part of the problem for teachers. She comes off as self-righteous and has a habit of making verbal blunders. She is not helping their cause, at least not a spokeswoman.
  14. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Sep 12, 2012 -> 11:12 AM) this is absolutely back QB syndrome, and many people are suggesting he start. and have been for months There may be some calling for that - I was asking for it in this specific scenario. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Sep 12, 2012 -> 11:34 AM) Seconded. I have to agree.
  15. QUOTE (iamshack @ Sep 12, 2012 -> 10:29 AM) Youkilis has ABSOLUTELY NO RANGE right now. He hasn't made any above-average plays in a month. The only thing I can say is if we would have brought Orlando in there, they would have been on top of the plate, he probably would have bunted anyways, and they would have turned and gunned the guy out at third, per usual White Sox execution. Even when Youk squared around the first time, MCab didn't believe it...he didn't come in at all...that's why I thought maybe Youk was doing it on his own. But we had three straight hits. Why oh why oh why are you going to give the guy an out there, down two runs? Because Youk hasn't hit worth a lick against DET, or lately in general. And as you point out, the element of surprise was apparently effective, if Youk had gotten it down. If Youk can in fact bunt (again, I don't know this for sure), then I think it was a smart move.
  16. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Sep 12, 2012 -> 09:00 AM) PK14 had a what, 6-7 game hit streak broken last night? I know he's been getting on lately, but its been a lot of bloops, and honestly he looks lost up there to me. Just my feeling on it, I could be wrong. And then there's this... QUOTE (kitekrazy @ Sep 12, 2012 -> 09:12 AM) His hits need to count more than a box score. He's been pretty ineffective with guys on. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Sep 12, 2012 -> 09:18 AM) Again the Johnson obsession is just back up quarterback syndrome. The guy is 32 years old, and every shot he has gotten at the major league level has been awful for 5 or 6 years now. I know the AAA numbers are impressive, but so what. If he was 23 with no track record, we could talk, but he isn't. This isn't a prospect we are talking about here. This is the very definition of a AAAA player. No, its not backup QB syndrome, because no one in their right mind is suggesting Johnson start. They are saying he should get some AB's in certain match-ups.
  17. QUOTE (IlliniKrush @ Sep 12, 2012 -> 08:59 AM) I'm pretty sure Youkilis doesn't know how to bunt. That by itself makes it a bad move. Surprise? He's squaring around for a sacrifice. That's not a surprise, Cabrera's standing halfway to the plate. He may not know how, that I do not know. You'd think all these guys would know how - hell I remember Thome used to bunt once or twice a year. As for squaring around, if he was blatant before the pitch was even thrown, then that is just poor execution on Youk's part. I am talking about RV's decision here. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Sep 12, 2012 -> 09:07 AM) Youk was more likely to get hte guys to 3rd by taking a walk than by successfully getting the bunt down. If you want someone to bunt there, pinch hit someone who can bunt. Maybe a good idea, because... QUOTE (fathom @ Sep 12, 2012 -> 09:45 AM) Orlando Hudson: 33 sac bunts in his career Kevin Youkilis: 0 I wouldn't be against that. But then you also degrade your defense for the later innings.
  18. QUOTE (bmags @ Sep 12, 2012 -> 09:13 AM) I think your prediction flies in the face of every trend right now. There aren't more people in the city because people couldn't sell their house (if you can't sell your house, you can rent it to the booming rental market right now and pay your new mortgage.), there are more people in the city because more people are moving into the city. I think realistically you are going to add a nice tax base of younger people who will not be having kids or will move before they do, which will support those who do have kids in school. Once the economy recovers and even more move in, it should be fine, except we have a massive debt to the pensions which needs to get solved. I think you are about a decade or two behind. See below... QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Sep 12, 2012 -> 09:16 AM) I can't speak to Chicago in particular, but over the last 10 years, the exact opposite has been happening nationwide (on average). Fueled mainly by Fuel prices, but also by the fact that the neighborhoods have become more liveable/walkable, the trend has been people moving back closer to cities and urban areas rather than into the suburbs where the commutes are longer and more expensive. Population of the city of Chicago: 1960 3,550,404 −1.9% 1970 3,366,957 −5.2% 1980 3,005,072 −10.7% 1990 2,783,726 −7.4% 2000 2,896,016 4.0% 2010 2,695,598 −6.9% See the urban flight that peaked in the 80's... then a recovery in the 90's/2000's, as the city's renaissance was at its height... and now it is headed back down again. But the Metro as a whole (srroy, no %'s on this chart)... 1960 6,794,461 1970 7,612,314 1980 7,869,542 1990 8,065,633 2000 9,098,316 2010 9,461,105 Population continues to increase all along, even as the city shrinks. From 2000-2010, the city shrank by about 200k, and the suburbs grew about 650k. The direction, lately, has clearly been outbound, not inbound., at least on a broad scale. I can't necessarily find numbers for 2010-2012, because there just isn't any hard data. I did find a number showing that most of that 200k drop (150k of it or so) was in the 2005-2010 half of the decade. So I think we can definitely say, the trend has been AWAY from the city. Where it gets harder to evaluate, is looking at the more detailed effect of population changes versus number of students in the 2008-2012 (or similar) period... Now, the city schools, the population of students has been relatively level in recent years, decreasing slightly. If my posit is correct, the population of students from, say, 2009 (when the economic situation really took hold, and the housing market was in free fall), should have either increased, stayed the same, or lost fewer people than the city. Well, in 2009, CPS had 417k students. For this year, they were looking at 407k coming in (was 405k last year). So that is a net decrease of ~2.4%. What did the city population do from 2009-2012? The general trend from 2005-2010, the best grouping I could find data for, is that it lost about 30k per year, which would be 90k over 3 years. That is 3.5%. So, yeah, the student population is holding stronger than the population growth. This falls in line with my theory. The final aspect of my theory can't really be proven statistically - is there a big bulk of people who will leave when they can? Knowing a lot of couples with young kids (being in my 30's), the answer in my admittedly small sample size is a big yes. Renting isn't an option for everyone either, because they can't (or won't) risk two mortgages on two properties. Others don't have the down payment or the credit or the equity. All these things are effected by the downturn. And really, this has been a cultural norm in Chicago - it has been common for a long time for couples to start in the city, but move to the suburbs at some point to raise their kids in the better schools, etc.
  19. Apparently I am the only Sox fan who was OK with Youk bunting there last night. I thought it was a good move. Youk has looked pretty terrible in the past few weeks with the bat, and if it is executed properly it takes DET by surprise, you lose the force, and you may even get a hit out of it with Cabrera at 3B. It didn't work. But I really don't get putting in Liriano there. If he's in he bullpen, he needs to be in for long relief in a game not very close, at least at first. That was a bizarre situation for him to be in, I really don't understand it.
  20. QUOTE (Jake @ Sep 12, 2012 -> 08:47 AM) I think the brain trust believes that Dan Johnson f***ing sucks and doesn't deserve starts, regardless of matchup. I think I agree. If Johnson isn't going to play when Dunn is out, the splits scream lefty and PK14 is in obvious need of a rest... then why is he even on the roster? The only argument for not putting him in, really, is that this is sort of like a playoff series because it is against Detroit, and you want your key guys in there all the time. And that is a valid point, I'm just not sure it outweighs the other ones in this case.
  21. QUOTE (Cerbaho-WG @ Sep 12, 2012 -> 07:30 AM) YTD splits against Scherzer: RH: .197/.242/.339 LH: .300/.374/.487 Youkilis, Konerko and Viciedo shouldn't be in the lineup tonight. I'd leave both Beckham (hot streak) and Alexei (defense) in. QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Sep 12, 2012 -> 07:36 AM) You have to remember that those splits are AVERAGES. That does not mean that a terrible LH/SW hitter like Johnson, Hudson or Olmedo is going to fare better than a good RH hitter like Youk or Konerko. You might be able to sell me on starting Danks over Viciedo, but no way do I want to see Johnson, Hudson, or Olmedo starting against any pitcher no matter what his splits are. If Dunn is back, I'd go with... De Aza 8 Youkilis 5 (I don't care how left-handed Hudson or Olmedo are, they are awful in any case) Wise 7 Dunn 0 Rios 9 AJP 2 Johnson 3 Ramirez 6 Beckham 5 If Dunn is still out... De Aza 8 Youkilis 5 (I don't care how left-handed Hudson or Olmedo are, they are awful in any case) Wise 7 Konerko 3 Rios 9 AJP 2 Johnson 0 Ramirez 6 Beckham 5
  22. Here's a prediction, and something to consider... CPS student numbers have gone up more in recent years than the city population would seem to dictate, and one of the primary reasons for this is that parents who normally would have packed up the kids and moved to the burbs for better schools (or sent them to private schools), are unable to move (or afford private school) because of the economy and the housing market realities. Lower grade levels are being overwhelmed - this is part of the reason some of these kids have 35 people in their 1st grade classes. This is a pent up wave. Now, with the strike going on, regardless of who parents blame (probably should blame both sides), they are angry at the school system. More pent up desire to leave the system with their kids. So, when the economy finally does recover with a bit more flourish, sometime in the next few years... you will see a new wave of urban flight, as families with kids take their kids away from the schools and crime in the city. Probably won't be as profound as what happened in the 70's and 80's, but it will happen. On the one hand, that will help lower class sizes in the city schools at first, and allow a greater percentage of kids to go to magnets. On the other hand, the bottom drops out of the budget, as tax revenues decrease and per-head state and fed money drops as well. So the fiscal nightmare the schools system is already in, may not actually get better when the economy does. Just something to think about.
  23. QUOTE (danman31 @ Sep 11, 2012 -> 09:34 PM) Knee injury. uh oh. Hopefully not serious. If it was going to happen, I guess now is the best possible time frame - right before the offseason starts.
  24. QUOTE (CrimsonWeltall @ Sep 11, 2012 -> 03:15 PM) It doesn't say that extra instructional time is on the existing teachers' workload. I think that time is for the new art/music/foreign language teachers who are supposed to be hired. It does say the existing teachers time at school is lengthened by 85 minutes, which according to that site is for additional prep time and professional development, which supposedly they're currently doing at home. Interesting. That article was from April... I wonder if it changed at all. And the article isn't specific. Seems like we are missing a lot of info on how much extra time the teachers are actually working, how much of it might just be shifted, and if some number of new teachers were or were not hired. Because the hours did increase. Hopefully when this thing ends, we can see the final reality of these things.
  25. QUOTE (fathom @ Sep 11, 2012 -> 03:09 PM) Stop playing Viciedo against a righty! Johnson DH?
